A little girl has been searching for her lost dog. All of a sudden, she hears a bark coming from around the corner, and she looks around to see . . .
Kevin has worked very hard to try out for the soccer team at school. The coach has posted a list of this year's team members on his office door. Kevin walks forward to look at the list . . . .
Mary's parents have been discussing whether or not to move to another state. They call Mary and her sister down to talk with them about their decision . . .
Lois has performed in the state gymnastics finals. She waits anxiously to hear the names of the winners. The announcer says, "And first place goes to . . ."
The deaths of Romeo (who kills himself because he thinks Juliet is dead) and Juliet (who kills herself when she awakes and sees Romeo dead). Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare (《
When Gaston and the townspeople come to attack the beast, and Belle admits her love for the beast. Beauty and the Beast, Disney (《
In "The Three Little Pigs," suspense builds up until the confrontation between the third pig and the wolf. This confrontation is the climax.(三只小猪) How to create a climax of a story?
(2017年11月浙江英语高考)On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous.
(2017年6月浙江英语高考) Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. ……he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf: quickly catching up with him. Mac's heart jumped. ……, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, ……. Then it ……, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back ……
(2017年6月浙江英语高考)The car abruptly stopped in front of him. "Get into the car." Paul shouted at Mac. Mac jumped off the bike and slid into the car without delay as the wolf was just two steps away and was about to tear Mac into pieces. What a narrow escape!
(2018年6月浙江英语高考)But before we jumped off the horses, we found that we had been off the beaten track and got lost. We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Exhausted and hungry, I wondered if we could find our way back.
(2016年10月浙江英语高考) Immediately, an absolute darkness ruled the forest. Jane, exhausted and scared, lay down near a stone, missing her family at a distance. All the fantastic memory crowded in and she couldn't help crying, "Hadn't I quarreled with Tom, walked away and climbed to the high place, I wouldn't be trapped in this awful place, confronted with the danger of dying.” She regretted with endless anxiety, and then became asleep with shining tears in her eyes.
Immediately, an absolute darkness ruled the forest(黑暗). Even worse, the temperature suddenly dropped dramatically.
It didn’t take long for the forest to be enveloped in darkness(黑暗). Her rasping breath steamed(寒冷) in the moonlight and her throat was parched from thirst.

“I'm going to miss you so much, Poppy, "said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪)get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile.” I guess this is it, “he said.” I'll see you back home in a month, okay?"His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn't.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. "What should we do to cheer Poppy up?"asked Dad. “We've tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, “smiled Mom.” Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy."
It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

Dad put the box on the ground and opened the top. A shiny little wet nose popped up. Then two fluffy paws. Next the box tipped over sideways, and out tumbled a mass of wiggly golden silliness. Poppy was amazed. She wagged furiously. She barked with joy. She smiled, her tongue lolling out as she investigated the surprise. The little pup was not shy and immediately starting yipping and jumping around the older dog. “That didn’t take long,” remarked Mom, as both dogs went roaring around the house in an impromptu game of chase. Dad laughed.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. He had missed Poppy and was looking forward to seeing her. When he bent down to give her a big hug, he fell over in surprise as a small golden cloud came racing up to lick his face too. “Oh my gosh, who is this?” he exclaimed. His parents laughed at the look of shock on his face. “That’s Pee-wee,” said Dad. “I can’t believe you got yourselves a puppy!” “We didn’t,” replied Mom. “This puppy is for Poppy!”

It was a rainy November morning. Overcome with anger I knew if I didn’t leave the house soon I would lose my temper with my husband, Joe. As rain came down in sheets, Joe offered to take me to work. I struggled into my jacket, seized my bag and teaching plans and ignored him.
He insisted and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes sill on the table. “Don’t you have enough to do? I can take care of myself. ” I stormed out, not even kissing him good-bye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut.
Joe and I had been eagerly looking forward to our retirement when a heart attack that past spring forced him to leave his job earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills mounted we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.
The new arrangement was a disaster. Exhausted after a day of full work, all I wanted was a hot home-cooked meal and a good night’s sleep. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. Sometimes he would serve oatmeal(燕麦)for several nights in a row. One night when I dragged myself to bed, I was terrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue. He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was just the secret.
Ten minutes later, ignoring Joe s warning, I turned off the main route. I thought it hadn’t rained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn’t risk walking in this. Almost 20 minutes passed. The car began to shake. I got frightened to death when I heard three long honks(喇叭声).

Looking over my shoulder, I stared into the flashing lights of a truck. It was Joe!I couldn’t help bursting into tears. Joe shouted to me not to be frightened. Then he threw a thick rope so that I could hang on to it and walk straight toward him. I opened the door, grabbed it and inched out. However, a sudden fall left me in the rushing water. I struggled to my feet, only to find a branch blocking the way right in front of me.
I screamed that I couldn’t make it. Joe, however, remained calm!He urged me to take one step at a time and assured me I could make it. I moved forward slowly and cautiously before I fell into his arms. Sobbing against his chest, I apologized that I shouldn’t have taken the shortcut. Joe patted me saying his primary concern was my safety. Only then did I realize Joe actually understood how to take care of me despite his trouble with the housework.

Jenny stared at the store window longingly. There was nothing in this world that she wanted more than a Happy Hannah doll and all that currently separated her from the hottest doll of the holiday season was a thin piece of glass and S29.95 plus tax. Unfortunately, Jenny didn't even have the 95 cents, so she let out a deep sigh and continued walking home.
Suddenly, a pink rectangle(矩形)in the snow caught her eye. Jenny walked over and realized it was a leather wallet. She removed it from the snow, and opened the wallet to find a thick pile of folded green bills and two plastic cards. One was a credit card and the other an ID.
Jenny stared at the old woman in her ID photo. The woman had a beautiful smile that reminded Jenny of her grandma. Jenny sighed and then she put the wallet into her purse. She turned around and walked in the direction from which she came.
Jenny's heart beat quickly as she entered the store. She had long dreamed about this moment, but something didn't feel right about it As she approached a neat pile of Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed away her feelings. She grasped one Happy Hannah dolly.
As Jenny approached the register, the Happy Hannah Show theme song began playing. It was her mobile pone. It was her grandma In one hand she held the Happy Hannah doll and in the other she held the phone on which her grandma was calling. Jenny’s heart was filed with love and appreciation as she thought of her sweet old grandma She put the doll down and picked up the phone call.
“Hi Grandma? I'm going to be a little bit late tonight. I've got to drop something off... Yeah, it was good...OK...Alright...I love you too.”. Jenny left the store and walked through the melting snow all the way to the other side of the town. She though of her grandma as she rang the bell at 301 West Street.

The woman who answered the door had been crying recently and looked upset and anxious.“Are you Mrs. Green?" Jenny asked politely, recognizing her from the ID card instantly. Mrs. Green nodded in confusion and let her come in.“Madam, did you lose something?” Jenny continued and asked some necessary questions.“I lost my wallet with the money to buy gifts for some poor children.” The old lady blurted out at last, her eyes rounding in surprise and sparkling with hope. Overcome with guilt, Jenny felt her face burning and handed the wallet to her. Thank God, she would have disappointed those kids.
The woman took the wallet smilingly. She held it to her chest tightly and then hugged Jenny, tears streaming down her face.“You are the real angel. No one knows what the wallet means to the children.” She sobbed in gratitude. Jenny's soft heart was touched because her grandma often called her angel. That night, she darted across the street, the creaking of snow echoing in the air. How eager she was to tell her grandma that today she got a present more meaningful than Hannah doll-She was a real angel!

Long long ago in a town, a newly-elected mayor was determined to do something effective to make the town better than before.
The mayor was acutely aware that his goal should be achieved not only by laws but also morals as well. He was a firm believer of the thought that nothing good could come to a town whose people only complained and expected others to solve their own problems! One day, a new idea suddenly struck him.
Early one morning, the mayor dressed himself up and went to a village nearby. He secretly placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid a gold coin under the stone. The instant every preparation was done, he hid himself behind a huge maple tree and watched closely, wondering what would happen before long.
The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He took no notice of it and the cart violently crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. "What fool put this stone here?" he shouted loudly. He picked himself up and angrily went away.
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head and paying no attention to the road. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limped away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The mayor watched all day as many people passing to and fro complained about the stone but he found nobody making an attempt to move it and have the road cleared of the obstacle. The mayor was disappointed and even in despair. "Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm?"

Just then, the mayor saw a young girl coming along. She was from a poor family and had worked all day, worn-out. When seeing the stone, she thought, “It’s a danger to whoever comes down the street after dark. I should move it out of the way!” Thin as she was, she pushed the stone with all her might and finally made it. Turning round, she saw the gold coins where the stone had been. Rooted to the spot with surprise, she was wondering whose gold it was.
At that moment, the mayor stepped out from behind the tree. “Sir,” she said, “Is this gold yours? If not, we surely must find the owner!” He replied, “My dear, the gold is mine but now it’s yours, because it’s you that has learned the lesson I want to teach my people.” The story went about soon. The adults passing earlier felt ashamed and guilty about their irresponsibility. From then on, the people in this town became more responsible and caring for each other. Of course, one good turn deserves another. Years later, the whole town took on a completely new outlook.

One spring morning many years ago, I had been searching for gold along Coho Creek on southeastern Alaska’s Kuprean of Island, and as I emerged from a forest of spruce(云杉) and hemlock tree, I froze in my tracks. No more than 20 paces in the bog(沼泽) was a huge Alaskan timber wolf - caught in one of Trapper George’s traps.
Old George had died the previous week of a heart attack, so the wolf was lucky. Confused and frightened at my approach, the wolf backed away. Then I noticed something else: It was a female, and her teats were full of milk. Somewhere there was a den of hungry pups (小狼) waiting for their mother.
From her appearance, I guessed that she had been trapped only a few days. That meant her pups were probably still alive. But I suspected that if I tried to release the wolf, she would turn aggressive and try to tear me to pieces.
So I decided to search for her pups instead and began to look for tracks that might lead me to her den. Fortunately, there were still a few remaining of snow. After several moments, I spotted pups’ marks on a trail.
The tracks led a half mile through the forest, then up a slope covered with many rocks. I finally spotted the den at the base of an enormous spruce, There wasn’t a sound inside. Wolf pups are shy and cautious, and I didn’t have much hope of inviting them outside, But I had to try. So I began imitating the high-pitched(声音很尖锐的) sound of a mother wolf calling her young. No response. A few moments later, after I tried another call, four tiny pups appeared. They couldn’t have been more than a few weeks old.

I extended my hands. They tentatively sucked at my fingers. Perhaps hunger had helped overcome their natural fear. Then one by one, I placed them in a fur bag and headed back down the slope. When the mother wolf spotted me, she stood up right. Possibly picking up the smell of her young, she let out a high-pitched, plaintive whine. I released the pups, and they raced to her. Within seconds, they were sucking at her belly.
With her young to protect, she was becoming aggressive. What next? I wondered. So tender were the pups that it was impossible for them to survive without mother’s protection. Hence, I had to release her. I fetched an iron bar. Using a rock as the supporting point I unlocked the chain. After gaining freedom, she howled at me with her head low showing gratitude. Watching the mother and her pups disappear in the forest, I let out a sigh of relief.

September is most beautiful in Strathroy, where people wholeheartedly enjoy the simple pleasures of life and nature.
Roland was no exception. He was a magnificent German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬), a little lazy and over-weight though. He loved to doze in the backyard. He yawned and stretched his body as he heard the slowly approaching footsteps of Mrs. Proudfoot. “Come have your lunch dear!” said Mrs. Proudfoot with her usual fondness for him and he wagged his tail affectionately in return.
Roland was licking the last piece of meat in his plate when the doorbell burst into music. Mrs. Proudfoot hurried to answer the door. Roland stood alert by her side.
“Good noon Mrs. Proudfoot”. It was Sam, her teenage neighbor. “My! My! You look pale! What happened?” asked Mrs. Proudfoot with genuine worry. She immediately waved him in and closed the door behind. Mrs. Proudfoot was a lonely widow, but was well loved in her neighborhood especially by kids, though she had no kids to call her own.
Once encouraged, Sam disclosed his dilemma. “My friend Barry lost a rare book of school library. It costs 150 dollars, but he has only 55 dollars and his poor parents can’t afford to pay the rest. Barry is working part time but that’s far from enough.” With a dramatic sigh he continued, “If he didn’t refund the loss before the end of term, he will be dismissed from final exams. That will ruin his future! I have to help him, whatever it takes. He is my best friend.”
“Don’t worry, Sammy. You want me to pay…” but Mrs. Proudfoot was interrupted. “No, No, Mrs. Proudfoot. This is not what I came here for. I’ll work for you. Would you favor me to walk your dog please? For 2 dollars a day.” He looked up with begging eyes.
Mrs. Proudfoot clapped her hands in agreement, “That can’t be better! I’ve been worried about Roland lately. He does need some exercise! It’s nice of you to make such an offer.”
Sam thanked her over and over, “I will start tomorrow morning.”

Sam arrived very early the next morning. Seeing Roland lazily bathed in mild sunshine with eyes narrowed into a line, Sam darted towards him, arms widely opened. Giving him a lazy glimpse, Roland politelywagged his tail and then turned his head away, falling sound asleep again. Desperately brainstorming, Sam got a piece of delicious bone from Mrs. Proudfoot. Lured by the tasty smell, Roland swiftly bounced up and jumped at the bone, following Sam out. In this way, the first day was smoothly finished. Day by day, Sam was delighted to find Roland gradually become willing and eager to have a walk outside.
A month later, Mrs. Proudfoot was delighted to find Roland fit and energetic. Enjoying the pleasure to roam along the country road with Roland, Sam also harvested a lot from the relaxing time. Eventually one day, Sam was excited to tell Mrs. Proudfoot, “Barry and I have earned enough money. Thank you, Mrs. Proudfoot! But can I continue walking Roland for you? For free!” Radiantly, Mrs. Proudfoot nodded. Receiving a positive answer, Sam was wild with joy and Roland, wagging his tail merrily, as if intoxicated. Sometimes only a little kindness can ignite something shining, making the world more beautiful and harmonious.
