A dentist office has a special smell that you don’t find in a doctor’s office. That smell is the only thing I remember as I sat in the chair waiting for my name to be called. When they finally did open a door and call my name, I remember feeling like it was the longest walk of my life.
The first time seeing the dental tools when you are a little person is very horrible. I was sure to be worse than death. The dentist was a lot kinder than my doctor and made the whole visit pass as quickly as possible. Yes, I had a cavity(蛀洞) and made a plan for a set of follow up visits. When I was nine years old and growing up in New Zealand, I had a pen friend named Lisa in Chicago, the US. We wrote to each other once a week. We shared stories about our families, pets and hobbies. However, when we were in our middle school, Lisa and I lost contact.
Two years ago, I read a story about pen friends in a newspaper. The two people finally met after writing to each other for 55 years. It was then that I thought about Lisa. In fact, I had thought about her many times over the years. I had even searched her name on the Internet. But I could never spell her last name, Gutierrez: Did it have one “t” and two “r’s” or two “t’s” and one “r”? Was the “i” before or after the “t”? On that day, my spelling was once again wrong, I had to give up my search and didn’t want to try anymore. I thought I would never meet Gutierrez again.
Twenty-four hours later, I got a message in my mailbox: Is this the same Willow Older who grew up in New Zealand? This is your pen friend, Lisa.
Later, I found that _________. Because “Older” is much easier to spell than “Gutierrez”, she found me in about five seconds. And so, after 30 years we became pen friends once again. D.Willow thought about Lisa because she saw Lisa’s name in the newspaper.
I fix (修理) computers for most of my friends. One morning, a friend came for help. What surprised me was that she completely disassembled (拆解) not one but two of her computers because they couldn’t connect to the Internet.
I thought I was going to receive two computers, but I was completely wrong. What I was given was a huge box full of parts. I had no idea why she did all of this, but she said she just got crazy and didn’t stop until every single part was taken apart.
My friend then told me that she didn’t need two computers, so if I just made one computer out of the box of parts, she would give me one of her LCD monitors.
Nine hours later, I had one fully-functional computer. Actually it wouldn’t have taken that long, but the situation (情况) was so funny that some time when I tried to put the parts together, I laughed too hard to do anything.
Finally my friend left one monitor for me, and took away her computer. It gave me a feeling of happiness. Usually the happiest thing for me was not the reward, but what I did for others.
