How you perform in this test will be noted in your personnel file and could affect your salary. The most important information I want to give you now is about safety and cleanliness. First of all, the only acceptable shoes are sports shoes; don’t wear jackets, necklaces or loose belts; you should wear full-protected clothing in the lab. Second, everything must be kept clean. Famous People Who Begin With Difficulties
Oprah Winfrey
Probably having one of the most famous success stories, Oprah was born into a poor family in Mississippi, raised by a single mother living on welfare. She was physically, and mentally abused during her childhood. Despite her initial struggles as a young girl, she turned herself into one of the most successful talk show hosts of our time.
Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey has been the star of some of the most successful movies of all time. But Carrey grew up extremely poor in Canada. When he was a teenager, his family took security jobs in a factory to help pay the bills. And during his first stand-up comedy performance, he was booed off (喝倒彩) the stage. Not shortly after, he made it big on In Living Color and then went on to star in Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura in the same year!
James Dyson
If you thought Thomas Edison’s failures were bad, let me introduce you to James Dyson, the famous inventor of the Dyson vacuums (真空吸尘器) you see all over the television. Dyson developed over 5,000 failed prototypes (原型) before finding the bagless vacuum brand. Not only that, he put his entire savings account into his prototypes over fifteen years! Luckily, the bagless vacuum worked.
Stephen King
Before Stephen King became known as a great living writer—having written over 60 novels, many of which have been adapted for film and television—King was rejected over and over again. In his memoir, On Writing, King describes how he used to post his rejection letters on the wall for inspiration. His first novel, Carrie, was rejected 30 times.
21.What do Oprah and Jim have in common?
A.They were abused by parents. B.They grew up in poor families.
C.They were hired as comedians. D.They found jobs in a factory.
22.What did James Dyson do?
A.He repaired the failed prototypes. B.He developed over 5,000 brands.
C.He put all efforts into marketing. D.He invented the bagless vacuum.

Being highly successful in any field is pretty rare. It takes a combination of natural talent, luck, determination, and plenty of outside support for someone to make it big in sports, entertainment, or business. But what if competing is all that matters to you, whether you are likely to succeed or not? This was the goal of Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, and his reaching that goal was an amazing achievement.
Born in the UK in 1963, Edwards was a passionate downhill skier whose dream was to compete for Britain in world-class competitions. He would have liked to represent his country in the 1984 Winter Olympics, but there were a large number of downhill competitors, and Edwards didn’t qualify. Seeing his chance elsewhere, he switched to ski jumping. Ski jumping didn’t cost as much as downhill skiing, and there was almost no competition for a place on the British team.
But a number of hurdles could have meant the end of Edwards’ dream. He weighed more than most competitors. He had no financial support for his training. Poor eyesight meant that he had to wear glasses under his goggles—not a good thing when they steamed up at high altitudes. But he couldn’t let any of these discourage him. He saw himself as a true lover of the sport who simply wanted the chance to compete. Winning wasn’t the point. Having the opportunity to try was all he cared about. And nothing could stop him from trying.
In the end, Edwards took 55th place at the 1987 World Championships. He then went on to the
1988 Winter Olympics where he finished last. Many athletes would have been embarrassed about this result, but he is proud of his achievements to this day. His determination to fight against all the odds made him a global hero, and in 2016, the inspiring film Eddie the Eagle was made about his life.
24.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To add some background information. B.To uncover the secret of success.
C.To expect an answer from readers. D.To introduce the topic.
25.Why did Michael Edwards choose ski jumping?
A.It was more popular. B.It needed fewer skills.
C.There was little competition. D.There was free equipment.
26.What does the underlined word “hurdles” mean in paragraph3?
A.Doubts. B.Obstacles. C.Changes. D.Options.
27.What made Michael Edwards outstanding?
A.His passion for the sport. B.His determination to win.
C.His attitude towards the Olympics. D.His ability to overcome physical disabilities.
根据文章第一段“Being highly successful in any field is pretty rare. It takes a combination of natural talent, luck, determination, and plenty of outside support for someone to make it big in sports, entertainment, or business. But what if competing is all that matters to you, whether you are likely to succeed or not? This was the goal of Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, and his reaching that goal was an amazing achievement.(在任何领域取得巨大成功都是非常罕见的。一个人要想在体育、娱乐或商业领域取得成功,需要天赋、运气、决心和大量外界支持的结合。但是,如果竞争对你来说是最重要的,不管你是否可能成功呢?这就是迈克尔·爱德华兹的目标,他更广为人知的名字是“鹰”艾迪·爱德华兹,他实现了这个目标是一个惊人的成就)”可知,第一段是为了引出话题,表示“有一些人把竞争看得比成功更重要”。故选D项。
25.C【解析】细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Seeing his chance elsewhere, he switched to ski jumping. Ski jumping didn’t cost as much as downhill skiing, and there was almost no competition for a place on the British team.(看到在其他地方有机会,他转向了跳台滑雪。跳台滑雪不像速降滑雪那么贵,而且在英国队中几乎没有竞争)”可知,Michael Edwards选择跳台滑雪是因为竞争更小。故选C项。
26.B【解析】词义猜测题。根据文章划线词后“could have meant the end of Edwards’ dream(就意味着爱德华兹梦想的终结)”及“He weighed more than most competitors. He had no financial support for his training. Poor eyesight meant that he had to wear glasses under his goggles—not a good thing when they steamed up at high altitudes.(他比大多数竞争者都重。他没有资金支持他的训练。视力不佳意味着他必须在护目镜下面戴上眼镜——这在高海拔地区可不是件好事)”可知,hurdles表示的是“障碍”,与obstacles意思相近。故选B项。
27.A【解析】细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“He saw himself as a true lover of the sport who simply wanted the chance to compete. Winning wasn’t the point. Having the opportunity to try was all he cared about. And nothing could stop him from trying.(他认为自己是一个真正热爱这项运动的人,只是想有机会参加比赛。输赢不是重点。有机会尝试是他唯一关心的。没有什么能阻止他去尝试)”及文章最后一段“His determination to fight against all the odds made him a global hero, and in 2016, the inspiring film Eddie the Eagle was made about his life.(他与所有困难作斗争的决心使他成为全球英雄,2016年,鼓舞人心的电影《“鹰”艾迪》拍摄了他的生活)”可知,Michael Edwards对运动的热爱使他出类拔萃。故选A项。

One of the most curious features of the modern world is the manner in which design has been widely transformed into something meaningless. But I want to argue design should be the crucial block on which the human environment is shaped and constructed for the betterment and delight of all.
Not surprisingly, in the absence of widespread agreement about its significance and value, much confusion surrounds design practice. In some subject areas, authors can assume common ground with readers. Other subject areas can be so difficult that ho such mutual understanding exists.
Design sits uncomfortably between these two extremes. As a word it is common enough, but it is full of disharmony, has innumerable manifestations (表现), and lacks boundaries that give clarity and definition. As a practice, design generates vast quantities of material, much of it ephemeral, only a small proportion of which has sustained quality.
So how can design be understood in a meaningful sense? Design is one of the basic characteristics of what it is to be human, and an essential determinant of the quality of human life. If things are a necessary part of our existence, why are they often done so badly? There is no simple answer. Cost factors are sometimes advanced, but the remove between doing something well or badly can be exceedingly small, and cost factors can in fact be reduced by appropriate design inputs.
This book is based on a belief that design matters profoundly to us all in innumerable ways and represents an area of huge, underutilized potential in life. It sets out to explore some reasons why this is so and to suggest some possibilities of change. The intention is to extend the range of what is understood by the term, and examine the depth of design practice as it affects everyday life in a diversity of cultures.
28.What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A.The causes of confusion. B.The significance of design.
C.The differences in subjects. D.The common ground in people.
29.What does the underlined word “ephemeral” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Meaningful. B.Enormous. C.Short-lived. D.Hard-wearing.
30.What do we know about design?
A.Design is just about arts or trends.
B.Cost factors account for inadequate design.
C.The author argues that design is meaningless .
D.Very few are incapable of improvement by proper design.
31.What is the book aimed at?
A.Reducing design inputs. B.Persisting in meaningful design practices.
C.Denying previous conception of design. D.Clarifying the confusion surrounding design.
根据第二段“Not surprisingly, in the absence of widespread agreement about its significance and value, much confusion surrounds design practice. In some subject areas, authors can assume common ground with readers. Other subject areas can be so difficult that ho such mutual understanding exists.(毫不奇怪,在缺乏对其意义和价值的广泛认同的情况下,围绕着设计实践的许多困惑。在某些主题领域,作者可以假定与读者有共同点。其他学科领域可能非常困难,不存在这样的相互理解)”可知,文章第二段主要讲的是困惑的原因。故选A。
根据第四段“Design is one of the basic characteristics of what it is to be human, and an essential determinant of the quality of human life. If things are a necessary part of our existence, why are they often done so badly? There is no simple answer. Cost factors are sometimes advanced, but the margin between doing something well or badly can be exceedingly small, and cost factors can in fact be reduced by appropriate design inputs. (设计是人类生活质量的基本特征之一,也是人类生活质量的基本决定因素。如果事物是我们存在的必要组成部分,为什么它们经常做得如此糟糕?没有一个简单的答案。成本因素有时是先进的,但把事情做得好或做得不好之间的差距可能非常小,而成本因素实际上可以通过适当的设计投入来降低)”可推知,很少有产品不能通过适当的设计进行改进。故选D。
31.B【解析】细节理解题。根据最后一段“The intention is to extend the range of what is understood by the term, and examine the depth of design practice as it affects everyday life in a diversity of cultures.(目的是扩大这个术语的理解范围,并研究设计实践的深度,因为它影响着不同文化的日常生活)”可知,本书旨在坚持有意义的设计实践。故选B。

A young woman holds up a book and smiles. “This is day one of me reading ‘The Song of Achilles’,” she says. The video jumps forward. “And this”, she cries, her face stained with tears, “is me finishing it.”
A new form of literary criticism is boosting sales of books. This is BookTok, as the literary wing of the app TikTok is known. Imagine the emotional pitch of a Victorian melodrama, add music, and you have the general idea. BookTok is passionate. It is also profitable—at least for publishers.
Bloomsbury, a publishing house based in Britain, recently reported record sales and a 220% rise in profits, which Nigel Newton, its boss, put down partly to the “absolute phenomenon” of BookTok. On Amazon, BookTok is so influential that it has leapt into the titles of books themselves. The novel “It Ends With Us”, for instance, is now listed as “It Ends With Us: TikTok made me buy it!” Evidently, TikTok did a good job: the romance is riding high in the top 100 in both Britain and America.
At the same time, BookTok pushes back against publishing amnesia(失忆症). Books are imagined to award immortality (不朽) to authors—to be a “monument more lasting than bronze”, as the Roman poet Horace wrote-but the lifespan of most is extremely short. Dig out a list of bestsellers from 20 years ago: not only are today’s readers unlikely to buy them, most won’t have heard of them.
BookTok is reviving backlists. One reason published it, says Philip Gwyn Jones of Picador, a British publishing house, was that, under its influence, old titles were creeping back into the bestseller charts. It offers such books “a second life”, and he applauds it. “Eventually, a great book finds its readers,” Mr. Gwyn Jones says. “You just have to hope that, unlike Kafka, authors don’t have to die before that happens.” Start trending on BookTok, and they won’t.
32.What is paragraph 1 aimed at?
A.Boosting sales of books.
B.Introducing the topic of the text.
C.Describing the woman’s feelings.
D.Illustrating the book The Song ofAchilles.
33.Why is It Ends With Us mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To promote the book via BookTok.
B.To introduce the romance book in BookTok.
C.To present the influence of the book in BookTok.
D.To show the increase of book sales due to BookTok.
34.What can we learn about Kafka from the last paragraph?
A.BookTok makes his books masterpieces.
B.Quite a few people read his books earlier.
C.He died before his books were recognized.
D.His books are not well received all the time.
35.What does the author talk about BookTok?
A.BookTok can make books live forever.
B.It became a main form of literary criticism.
C.Many authors promote their books via BookTok.
D.It makes previously published books popular again.
根据首段“A young woman holds up a book and smiles. “This is day one of me reading ‘The Song of Achilles’,” she says. The video jumps forward. “And this”, she cries, her face stained with tears, “is me finishing it.”(一位年轻女子拿起一本书,微笑着。“这是我读《阿喀琉斯之歌》的第一天,”她说。视频向前跳转。“而这个,”她哭着说,她的脸上沾满了泪水,“是我在完成它。”)”以及第二段中的“A new form of literary criticism is boosting sales of books. This is BookTok, as the literary wing of the app TikTok is known.”
根据第二段中的“It is also profitable—at least for publishers.(它也是有利可图的——至少对出版商来说是这样。)”可知,BookTok还有一个好处就是为对出版商来说是有好处的,结合第三段中的“On Amazon, BookTok is so influential that it has leapt into the titles of books themselves. The novel “It Ends With Us”, for instance, is now listed as “It Ends With Us: TikTok made me buy it!”(在亚马逊上,BookTok的影响力如此之大,以至于它已经跳入了图书标题本身。例如,小说《它随着我们而结束》现在被列为“它随着我们而结束:TikTok让我买了它!”)”可知,由于Booktok的影响,让人们购买《它随着我们而结束》这本书,由此可知,此处提到《它随着我们而结束》是为了说明由于Booktok的影响,使得书籍的销售量增加。故选D项。
34.C【解析】细节理解题。根据第五段中的““Eventually, a great book finds its readers,” Mr. Gwyn Jones says. “You just have to hope that, unlike Kafka, authors don’t have to die before that happens.”(“最终,一本伟大的书会找到它的读者,”格温·琼斯说。“你只需要希望,不像卡夫卡,作家们不会在这一切发生之前死去。”)”可知,格温·琼斯认为不要像卡夫卡那样,在他的作品找到读者前就死去,由此可知,卡夫卡的作品在他去世前没有得到认可。故选C项。
35.D【解析】细节理解题。根据尾段中的“BookTok is reviving backlists.( BookTok正在复兴后备书目。)”以及“It offers such books “a second life”, and he applauds it.(它为这样的书提供了“第二次生命”,他对此表示赞赏。)”
In order to survive in the world with challenges, we need to be wise. 36 Let me tell you this, wisdom provides us with perspective when we need it and it calms us down in terrible situations. Here are some strategies that we can use to get wiser.
37 This will open up new pathways for us. Never base your perspective on the most popular opinion or which is the most comfortable for you. Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble, then you will always get to experience something new.
You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day. Take new classes, read books and the list goes on and on. 38 All of these activities will help you to tackle problems from different angles, making everything easier.
You obviously want to grow and do better in life, right? The best way is to have wise people as your mentors (导师), like teachers, colleagues and even special friends. Prior to making them a mentor, find out what makes them wiser, then engage in useful dialogue with them. 39
If you have accumulated a lot of knowledge, then why not share it with others too? 40 In today’s world, it is very easy to become wise but it isn’t easy to help others. So keep things balanced and never let go of your passions and values. This will pave the path to success.
A.Why do we communicate with wise people?
B.Why is wisdom crucial in this modern world?
C.Change your routine and see where life takes you.
D.Surf the Internet and clear out your problems that confuse you.
E.Sometimes we ourselves need to be open to diverse perspectives.
F.The more time is spent with them, the more transfer of knowledge there will be.
G.Communicating with others and helping them out will also increase your wisdom.

36.B【解析】根据空前的“In order to survive in the world with challenges, we need to be wise.(为了在这个充满挑战的世界上生存,我们需要变得聪明)”以及后文“Let me tell you this, wisdom provides us with perspective when we need it and it calms us down in terrible situations.(让我告诉你,当我们需要的时候,智慧会给我们提供视角,在糟糕的情况下,智慧会让我们冷静下来)”可知,智慧对每个人来说都是十分重要的,所以B项“Why is wisdom crucial in this modern world?(为什么智慧在现代社会如此重要?)”
37.E【解析】分析设空,位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文“This will open up new pathways for us. Never base your perspective on the most popular opinion or which is the most comfortable for you. Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble, then you will always get to experience something new.(这将为我们开辟新的道路。永远不要把你的观点建立在最流行的观点或对你来说最舒服的观点上。训练你的大脑成为一个不受评判的思想空间。如果你是谦虚的,那么你总能体验到新的东西)”可知,本段主张应学会接受不同的观点,所以E项“Sometimes we ourselves need to be open to diverse perspectives(有时候,我们自己也需要对不同的观点持开放态度)”符合文意。故选E项。
38.D【解析】根据上文“You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day. Take new classes, read books and the list goes on and on.(你一定是那种每天都能学到新东西的人。参加新的课程,阅读书籍,这样的例子不胜枚举)”以及后文“All of these activities will help you to tackle problems from different angles, making everything easier.(所有这些活动将帮助你从不同的角度解决问题,使一切变得更容易)”可知,空处应承接上文,列举学习新事物的方式,下文中的“All of these activities”即指代前两句话,且D项中的“clear out your problems”与下文中的“tackle problems”相呼应。故选D项。
39.F【解析】分析设空,位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“You obviously want to grow and do better in life, right? The best way is to have wise people as your mentors (导师), like teachers, colleagues and even special friends. Prior to making them a mentor, find out what makes them wiser, then engage in useful dialogue with them.(你显然想要成长,想要在生活中做得更好,对吗?最好的方法是找一些有智慧的人做你的导师,比如老师、同事,甚至是特别的朋友。在成为他们的导师之前,找出是什么让他们更聪明,然后与他们进行有益的对话)”可知,本段的主题为“以智者为师”,所以F项“The more time is spent with them, the more transfer of knowledge there will be.(与他们相处的时间越多,知识的传递就越多)”与本段主题相符,且F项中的“them”与上文中的“them”相呼应。故选F项。
40.G【解析】根据前文“If you have accumulated a lot of knowledge, then why not share it with others too?(如果你积累了很多知识,那么为什么不与他人分享呢?)”可知,本段提出积累了很多知识后要与他人分享并积极帮助他人,所以G项“Communicating with others and helping them out will also increase your wisdom.(与他人交流并帮助他们也会增加你的智慧。)”与本段主题相符,且G项中的“Communicating with others”与上文中的“share it with others”相呼应。

The emergency doctor stood at the foot of my husband’s hospital bed, holding the test results and a diagnosis — Acute Myeloid Leukemia He said to my husband, “Well move you to the leukemia floor. You’ll be here at least a month. ”
A month! My mind started spinning. My mom had fought breast cancer. My aunt had lung cancer. Both had died. But neither had been in hospital for a month! Exactly how bad was my husband’s diagnosis? And how were we going to struggle for a month? It was March. The end of a school year was approaching. My days with my high school students were limited. How could I prepare four weeks of lesson plans and hand them over to a substitute teacher? A month! Could we afford being in the hospital that long? Our insurance was good, but we’d still have to pay our part of the medical expenses. My meals wouldn’t be covered, and parking was so expensive! My head couldn’t do the math. I drove home, filled with countless worries. Even though the parking pass would be a significant discount, I couldn’t help but feel bothered by the cost throughout the drive.
The next morning, I packed the car with everything needed for our hospital stay and headed to school to see my students. Because we live in a small community, they would have heard about my husband’s diagnosis. I would assure them that my husband would be fine, and that I would be fine, too. I’d encourage them to be their best selves for the substitute-and for me—while I was on family leave.
When I entered my classroom, the chatter stopped. I put on a smile and continued to my podium (讲台). Sitting on top was a green envelope with “Mrs. Sargent” written on it. I looked over the frames of my glasses at twenty-eight faces, some smiling, some trying to resist. “What is this?” I asked. I picked up the envelope, and continued, “You guys…”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150 左右;
Paragraph 1:
When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out — fives, tens, twenties.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
As an adult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accept these teenagers’ hard-earned money, but I decided to accept it.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out-fives, tens, twenties. At that moment, my throat tightened with emotion and I understood the meaning behind their excited faces. An overwhelming sense of pride from them washed over me. Should I take it? My brain was spinning fast. Seeing the money that the students raised, I couldn’t help but wonder another question: How had these kids collected so much money? I could even imagine the countless hours they had spent working odd jobs, determined to save every penny to help me. Therefore, deep within my heart. there was a firm voice. “I can’t take it ?”
As an acult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accept these teenagers hard-earned money, but I decided to accept it. I tightly held up the cash and my voice trembled as I told them how I was bothered by the cost of parking. “Kids, you just covered my parking cost for the month.” But that’s not the real reason why I accepted it. With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I hugged each student tightly. More important than the envelope was the kindness in their hearts and the lesson they had taught themselves: how wonderful it feels to meet someone’s needs and to make a difference. Through their small act of kindness, these teenagers have shown me their growth and they are not ignorant children, but young individuals with wisdom and kindness in their hearts.
