Good evening. This is Alan Rickman here with this week’s weather report. After a week of dry weather, there’s a huge storm coming from the west. We are expecting heavy snowfall and strong winds tomorrow morning. The temperatures might drop sharply with a low of minus ten degrees Celsius. I won’t be surprised if schools get closed. So be careful when going outside. If you have to go out, dress warmly and don’t stay outside for too long. Road conditions might be poor, so avoid driving if you can. You should store enough food and other necessary items quickly, just in case you’ll have to stay at home for a couple of days once the storm hits. On Wednesday, the temperature varies from minus five degrees Celsius to minus eight. It seems that the storm will leave on the weekend with light snow expected. Next month the dry weather will come back, but it won’t bring back the warmth we enjoyed last week, but the severe cold instead. Sorry for all the bad news to those who enjoy outdoor sports. And that’s your weather report. Have a great evening! Now, back to Dan with tonight’s business news.

I’ve been happily married to my wife for 25 years. We have gone through a lot together, but I have never seen anyone that has remained so calm and cool through it all. We have three wonderful children together and she just recently went back to finish her education degree to become a teacher in Louisiana, which is more about pride than a prize.
A couple of years ago, my wife was in a rather bad accident. We were shopping together in a Dollar General and when we were at the checkout she sent me back to pick up a fan for her mother. While I was back there, I heard a horrific noise, and she screamed my name. When I got to the front of the store, I realized that an elderly driver had hit the gas instead of the brake, hitting my wife.
I was able to get a cooler that had fallen on her and decided to go with her to the hospital. She had to have work done on her knee by herself from all the glass that had gotten impaled into it, but it was nothing short of a miracle that she wasn’t hurt further.
That’s when we learned of another miracle. During an ultrasound and X-ray to make sure that my wife’s back was okay, we discovered that not only did she lack one of her kidneys, but she also had a birth defect. This wonderful woman has given me so much that I can never thank her enough. I was medically dismissed from the military and went on disability. She has held a job and helped to take care of me and our three children, 20, 17, and 13, through some of the craziest stuff I can imagine.
She is a strong and resolute woman that takes pleasure in teaching her children in the classroom. And I could not ask for a better woman to love and live with.
24.What was to blame for the accident of the author’s wife?
A.Her birth defect. B.A horrible noise.
    C.The author’s indifference. D.A driver’s mistake.
25.What did his wife do after being hit by a car?
    A.She called the police.
    B.She went to hospital alone.
C.She fell unconscious on the ground.
D.She dealt with the wound by herself.
26.How did the couple find that the wife lacked a kidney?
    A.Through a routine medical test.
    B.By examining her wounded back.
    C.By checking her birth defect.
    D.Through clearing all the glass.
27.Why did the author write the passage?
    A.To share his life experience.
B.To show his love for his family.
C.To express his thanks to his wife.

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to see the world through an animal’s eyes? For example, what a chimpanzee sees as it sits at the top of a tree, or a penguin’s view as it dives into the sea to catch its dinner?
These questions are answered in the nature documentary Animals with Cameras, produced by the BBC. The three-part series was first aired in the UK last month. To explore animal stories “told” by the animals themselves, the documentary’s filmmakers worked with scientists to develop cameras that wild animals could wear.
“Never before have we seen such high-quality footage (连续镜头) directly from the animal’s point of view,” BBC Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman told PBS. “This miniseries greatly expands our comprehension of animal behavior and this camera technology opens up new possibilities for discovering so much more.”
Indeed, the groundbreaking technology provides a new viewpoint of the animal kingdom. New cameras with enough battery life to shoot for hours at a time were designed to be comfortable enough for animals to wear, according to the documentary’s camera designer Chris Watts.
The technical challenges didn’t stop there. Some animals were very curious about the equipment, with some even fighting each other for the chance to wear a camera. In the case of chimpanzees, “we had to create dummy (仿造的) cameras, so that every chimpanzee could get one”, the miniseries’ wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan told Live Science.
For animals that were comfortable enough to be with human beings, the cameras could be fitted and removed by hand. But for others, the cameras came off automatically using a timed release and were collected afterward. This meant that the cameras needed to be as tough as possible.
To avoid disturbing the animals, scientists who were good at dealing with wildlife came to help by putting the cameras on the animals. “The last thing we want to do is cause them distress.” the documentary’s producer Dan Rees told the BBC. “To follow an animal in the first place, there had to be a clear benefit in terms of knowledge about it that might be useful to protecting a species in the future.”
Their efforts certainly paid off. “Footage that captures (捕捉) these rare and exciting glimpses of animals hidden habits is important to scientists, but documentaries like Animals with Cameras also resonate with (引起共鸣) audiences, connecting them with the beauty — and danger — of wildlife in their natural environments,” Live Science noted.
28.According to the text, Animals with Cameras ______.
A.is a documentary made by wildlife experts
B.presents high-quality footage of animals for the first time
C.shows wildlife from the unique viewpoint of animals
D.mainly records the life of chimpanzees and penguins
29.The case of chimpanzees is used to ______.
A.reflect the weakness of the camera technology
B.present how filmmakers put cameras on chimpanzees
C.explain why chimpanzees were attracted by the equipment
D.show how filmmakers dealt with the challenges in shooting
30.To avoid disturbing the animals, filmmakers ______.
A.set up a protected area for them to live in
B.invited scientists to help equip them with cameras
C.made the cameras look like animals in disguise
D.fitted and removed the cameras by hand
31.Why is Animals with Cameras important according to the text?
A.It could help scientists learn more about wild animals’ hidden habits.
B.It has contributed to the discovery of new species.
C.The camera technology shed light on future animal research.
D.It has raised people’s awareness of environmental protection.

The “diet” in diet drinks maybe a false promise for some soda lovers. True, they deliver the taste of a soda experience, without the calories. Yet, new research shows they can also leave people with increased appetite.
A study published recently in JAMA Network open adds to the evidence that drinks made with sucralose, an artificial sweetener (甜味剂), may increase the appetite among some people. “We found females and overweight people had greater brain reward activity after consuming the artificial sweetener,” says study author Katie Page, a physician at the University of Southern California. Both groups ate more food after consuming drinks with sucralose, compared with after regular sugar-sweetened drinks. In contrast, the study found males and people of healthy weight did not have an increase in either brain reward activity or hunger response, suggesting they’re not affected in the same way.
One theory is that it’s not the artificial sweetener itself that has a direct effect on the body. The idea is that artificial sweeteners may confuse the body by tricking it into thinking sugar is coming. “You are supposed to get sugar after something tastes sweet,” explains Swithers, “Your body has been used to that.” But the sugar never arrives, which may lead to the body’s less efficiency in processing sugar that s consumed later.
Swithers’ lab has also documented that when animals with a history of consuming artificial sweeteners get real sugar, their blood sugar levels rise higher than those of animals not fed artificial sweeteners. “It’s a small effect, but overtime this could contribute to potentially significant consequences,” she says. If this is happening in some people who consume diet soda, it could add to the risk of Type 2 diabetes (糖尿病), because when blood sugar rises, the body has to release more insulin (胰岛素) to absorb the sugar. “So what you’re doing is that you are kind of pushing the system harder,” Swithers says.
32.What can we learn from Katie page’s study?
A.Females enjoying diet drinks consume more food.
B.Artificial sweeteners help males with better appetite.
C.Diet drinks increase hunger response of healthy people.
D.people consuming sucralose have greater brain reward activity.
33.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The effect of sugar. B.Response to sweetness.
C.Artificial sweetener. D.The absence of sweetness.
34.What can we infer from Susan Swithers’words in the last paragraph?
A.More insulin release helps sugar level rise.
B.people drinking diet soda hardly absorb sugar.
C.Type 2 diabetes mainly results from artificial sweeteners.
D.Consuming artificial sweeteners might cause health problems.
35.What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A.The potential of artificially-sweetened drinks.
B.The wisdom of choosing healthy sweet drinks.
C.The underlying link between diet drinks and health.
    D.The differences among artificially-sweetened drinks.
由第二段中“We found females and overweight people had greater brain reward activity after consuming the artificial sweetener (我们发现,女性和超重者在食用人造甜味剂后,大脑的奖励活动更大)”和“Both groups ate more food after consuming drinks with sucralose, compared with after regular sugar-sweetened drinks. In contrast, the study found males and people of healthy weight did not have an increase in either brain reward activity or hunger response, suggesting they’re not affected in the same way. (与常规加糖饮料相比,两组人在饮用含有三氯蔗糖的饮料后都吃了更多的食物。相比之下,研究发现,男性和体重健康的人的大脑奖励活动或饥饿反应都没有增加,这表明他们没有受到同样的影响)”可知,女性相比于男性来说,在喝了无糖饮料后更容易吃得更多。故选A项。

由最后一段中““It’s a small effect, but overtime this could contribute to potentially significant consequences,” she says.
Mental Health Crisis Among Teens Demands a New Approach
Since the CDC released its survey results last month showing alarmingly high rates of sadness and depressive thoughts among teens, fingers have been pointed from two sides at the causes of this crisis. 36 . Others say that today’s more secular(世俗的)culture has confused our most vulnerable young people. But neither side seems to grasp the true urgency of the issue.
According to the CDC’s findings, more than one in five of the 17,000 high school students surveyed reported mental breakdown. Their rates of sadness and hopelessness are the highest in a decade, reflecting an increasing trend exacerbated by society’s isolation(隔离)and stress. 37 .
Parents as well as teachers and others who have direct contact with children must accept this preventive approach. It is crucial that they not be afraid to ask direct questions about depressive thoughts. 38 . It is also especially important that parents understand what help is available to their children.
39 . For example, we can demand equity equality, which means insurance coverage(保险范围)for behavioral illnesses health issues that is for physical , thus reducing the financial burden. We can also urge our congressmen to fund health programs and expand mental health professions. 40 . Put the politics aside. There are lives in the balance.
A.And they should resist the false idea that raising a question creates a risk that was not there before.
B.This means that we must put aside our disagreements and approach this issue as a matter of life and death.
C.Some have argued that the climate issue has created an existential threat and accompanying anxiety.
D.Hospitalization may also be appropriate when the person in question shows an immediate danger to themselves.
E.At the macro(宏观的)level, our country can do so much more to help people struggling with mental health problems and their families.
F.It’s time to stop blaming and turn our attention to this generation of struggling teenagers.
G.It’s time for those who have the power to amplify(放大)their voices and drive change to focus on helping teenagers and families access the help they need.

    Improving Our Handwriting
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Improving Our Handwriting
Good handwriting does bring us lots of benefits. It not only allows us to express ourselves better but also gives pleasure to the readers. What’s more, good handwriting contributes to higher scores in the exams.
There are two tips to improve our handwriting. For one thing, we can write Chinese characters well by practising brush calligraphy, which is a traditional and elegant art. It is known that many famous artists in Chinese history have left outstanding calligraphy works. For another thing, we can also follow copybooks in our spare time to improve our English handwriting. Don’t forget to ask our teachers for guidance when necessary.
As an old saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” With effort, we’ll definitely improve our handwriting.
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend was different from any other friends they had brought home. With a yellowish coat and tiny brown spots dropped across her nose, she was the cutest puppy I had ever seen.
When my husband got home that evening, he recognized the breed——a beagle puppy (猎兔犬), not more than twelve weeks old, he guessed. She ran to him right away and after dinner climbed into his lap to watch TV. By now the girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely. I tried to find seemingly logical reasons to explain my behavior.
By the end of the week, she was part of our family. We had named the puppy Molly. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time for the girls to take responsibility for another life, so they would learn the nurturing skills they’d need if they decided to become mommies when they grew up.
The following week, something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was asking for the return of a lost beagle puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately seeking.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I folded the newspaper, put it away in the drawer and tried to ignore what I saw. However, trapped in the dilemma of choice, I hesitated whether I should hide the truth. It was not long before my husband and daughters came home and started to have fun with Molly. At the sight of the scene that they were playing happily, I couldn’t help thinking about the owner’s sincere lost-dog ad. Though it would be pretty hard to part with Molly, my moral code told me to make the right choice.
I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately seeking. I quickly dialed the number and then came a woman’s voice. After explaining the situation of Molly, I could feel the embarrassing silence in the phone. Suddenly, she broke the embarrassing air and suggested that our families should raise Molly together. My parting pain gave way to excitement on the spot. I couldn’t say a word to describe my gratitude. In the following days, my daughters accepted to give Molly back and kept playing with Molly. We all knew that we did the right thing.
