【Learner Analysis】
Students in this class are high schl English learners with an intermediate level f English prficiency. They are familiar with the basic structure and cntent f narrative texts, but may struggle with mre cmplex texts that require critical analysis. Sme students may be mre cmfrtable sharing their pinins in small grups, while thers may prefer t cntribute in whle-class discussins.
【Teaching Prcedures】
Intrductin (5 minutes)
Begin by asking students if they have ever experienced any challenges when transitining t a new schl r grade level. Encurage them t share their experiences and pinins abut these challenges.
Intrduce the tpic f the lessn: "The Freshman Challenge". Explain that students will be reading a text abut a freshman named Adam wh is facing challenges in senir high schl. Preview the key vcabulary related t the text (e.g., freshman, curses, extra-curricular activities, vlunteer).
Skimming and Scanning (10 minutes)
Ask students t skim the text quickly t get a general idea f its structure and cntent. Encurage them t identify the main idea f each paragraph and t nte any key details that stand ut t them.
Ask students t scan the text fr specific infrmatin abut the challenges faced by Adam. Encurage them t highlight r underline any relevant infrmatin and t make ntes in the margins.
Critical Reading and Discussin (20 minutes)
Divide students int small grups and assign each grup a specific paragraph r sectin f the text t analyze in mre detail. Ask them t identify and discuss the specific challenges faced by Adam in that sectin, and t cnsider hw he is respnding t thse challenges.
After the small grup discussins, ask each grup t present their findings t the class. Encurage ther grups t ask questins and prvide feedback n their analysis. Facilitate a whle-class discussin abut the challenges faced by Adam and hw he is dealing with them.
Persnal Reflectin and Writing (10 minutes)
Ask students t reflect n their wn experiences with transitining t senir high schl r a new schl envirnment. Encurage them t think abut any challenges they have faced and hw they have respnded t thse challenges.
Ask students t write a brief paragraph r essay abut their wn experiences and pinins related t the tpic f the text. Prvide guidance n grammar, vcabulary, and rganizatin as needed.
Whle-class Feedback and Sharing (10 minutes)
Ask students t share their persnal reflectins and essays with the class. Encurage them t listen actively t their peers and t prvide cnstructive feedback n their writing. Facilitate a whle-class discussin abut the similarities and differences in their experiences and pinins.
Summarize the key pints cvered in the lessn and emphasize the imprtance f develping reading cmprehensin skills thrugh varius reading strategies. Encurage students t cntinue practicing these skills in future reading assignments and real-life situatins.
【Assessment】
Reading Cmprehensin: Assess students' ability t understand the main idea and details f the text by asking cmprehensin questins during class discussins and activities. Cnsider their ability t identify and analyze the challenges faced by Adam.
Small Grup Discussins: Assess students' participatin in small grup discussins by bserving their engagement and cntributins t the grup. Encurage active participatin and prvide feedback n their analysis and presentatin skills.
Persnal Reflectin and Writing: Assess students' ability t reflect n their wn experiences and pinins related t the tpic f the text by evaluating their persnal reflectins and essays. Cnsider the clarity, cherence, and grammar f their writing. Prvide feedback n grammar, vcabulary, and rganizatin as needed.
