World’s most delicious pancakes
Pancakesin all sorts of forms, made from all sorts of ingredient—have graced tables around the world, across every culture. Here are some of the best pancakes around the world.
Socca, France and Italy
Coming from the regions of Provence in France and Liguria in Italy these pancakes are simply made from chickpea flour, water, oil and flavouring.Traditionally cooked in large pans of oil placed in wood-fired ovens, these attractive treats are a great alternative to pizza. Socca is also a street food favorite in cities like Nice, where it’s served in paper bags and dusted with black pepper.
Scallion pancakes,China
Unlike most pancakes, these pleasant-smelling ones are actually made from dough(面团),rather than batter(面糊).Easy enough to make at home some people like to dip them in sauces. But they’re great just as they are—hot from the pan with the little pieces of scallions(葱).Regional variations include those from Shanghai which feature pork fat.
Crepes, France
These thin pancakes originated in Brittany in northwest France, way back in the13thcentury, but have since become the beloved of the world. They can be either sweet with fillings like fruit or chocolate, famously with ham and cheese, melted to perfection. Watching them being prepared is true cooking theater, as the batter is slowly pushed to perfect consistency.
Latkes, Israel
A celebrated dish from Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine,Latkes contain another uncommon ingredient in the form of potato. But it wasn't always so, as until the popularity of potatoes grew in Eastern Europe in the 19th century the recipe was all about cheese. On February 19,2009,Diane Van Deren was one of a dozen runners taking part in the Yukon Arctic Ultra,a 400mile race across frozen tundra(苔原)in the middle of winter. Not a single woman had completed it ever. With temperatures of 30 degrees below zero and only seven hours of daylight each day, it's probably the toughest race in the world.
But, then, there is no woman like Diane Van Deren.Twelve years earlier, Van Deren,a former professional tennis player, had a serious epilepsy(癫痫).The operation was successful, but she noticed a strange side effect:she could run without stopping for hours.
At the start of the Arctic Ultra, icy winds frozen Van Deren's water supplies, so she had nothing to drink for the first hundred miles. She kept going on with frozen fruit and nut bars. On the eleventh day, the ice beneath her feet cracked open and Van Deren fell up to her shoulders into a freezing river. She managed to climb out but her soaked(湿透的)boots froze to her feet.
Yet somehow through it all, Van Deren remained positive, which was perhaps another curious byproduct of her operation.“I have a problem about what is called short term memory.I could be out running for two weeks, but if someone told me‘It was day one of a race’.She jokes,I’d say,Great, let's get started!”

Apes(猿) have their own system of gestures to show what they mean. Chimpanzees and bonobo s are two kinds of apes that are closest to humans. They use about 80 different gestures to show what they mean. Researchers Kirsty Graham and Catherine Hobaiter at the University of St. Andrews decided to test whether humans could understand the gestures of apes. They wanted to see if humans with no training or experience could understand the gestures of chimpanzees and bonobos.
The researchers created a game for people to play online. The game was simple. People watched short videos of apes making a gesture. Then they had to choose the correct meaning of the gesture out of four possible answers. For the videos, the researchers chose 10 of the most common gestures used by chimpanzees and bonobos. Thousands of people played the game.
The researchers were surprised to find that people were able to choose the correct meaning of the gestures over 50% of the time. That's twice as good as people would be expected to do by chance. For some of the gestures, people were able to choose the correct meaning about 80% of the time. One example of this was the gesture of wiping the mouth, which people correctly guessed meant“give me that food”.
The scientists believe that humans may have a natural ability to understand the gestures of apes. But it's not clear why. Humans and other apes all developed from an earlier kind of ape that lived long ago. One possibility is that the body language of these gestures has been passed down from this shared ancestor.
Another possibility is that the gestures are a natural result of humans and apes sharing similar body shapes and needing to communicate similar ideas. It's also possible that the gestures simply look like the actions they are requesting.
★28. What is the purpose of the test of the researchers?
A. To know the meanings of apes gesture system.
B. To learn the relation between apes and humans.
C. To determine the exact number of apes' gestures.
D. To study people's understanding of apes' gestures.
★29. How do the researchers carry out the test?
A. By using an online game about apes' gestures.
B. By making people observe apes on the spot.
C. By asking four questions about apes' gestures.
D. By choosing 10 apes to play with people.
★★30. What does the result of the test show?
A. Humans can understand the apes' gestures well.
B. People can always choose the correct meaning.
C. Humans can understand the gestures by learning.
D. Apes can learn some of the gestures from humans.
★★★31. Why can humans understand the gestures of apes?
A. Apes often indicate humans’ gestures.
B. Humans lived with other apes long ago.
C. Apes and humans have the same ancestor.
D. The living environment of apes and humans is similar.

It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying, you are tired in the afternoon. It is then that you may want to eat something sweet, perhaps a sweet drink or a chocolate bar to lift your mood. After all, it's believed that a“sugar rush”gives you energy.
But a study suggests that sugar can make you feel worse rather than lift your mood. The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1,300 adults. They studied the effect of sugar on some aspects of mood. Those emotions include anger, alertness, depression and tiredness. They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired and less alert within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense over time.
According to researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short“feel good”period. However, as they begin to digest the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling. To remain on a“high”mood, people may eat more sugar until they become addicted to it. As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people being tired and less alert. But the result of the study doesn’t mean giving up sweet food altogether. According to WHO, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, so long as they make up less than 5 percent of our daily total energy intake.
So the next time you feel tired and can't concentrate on study and work, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. There are still other ways to relieve tiredness. Maybe a little exercise at midday is a better idea.
★★32. What influence does sugar have when people are tired?
A. Helping study. B. Lifting mood.
C. Providing energy. D. Producing depression.
★★33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How people take in sugar correctly.
B. How people keep normal blood levels.
C. How people burst the energy rapidly.
D. How sugar has a long influence on people.
★★★34. How does WHO advise people to do?
A. Give up all sweet food. B. Have the sugar only in fruit.
C. Control the amount of sugar. D. Take in food rich in energy.
★35. What should we do at noon to avoid tiredness in the afternoon?
A. Go over our study. B. Work less hard.
C. Have a chocolate bar. D. Take a bit exercise.

Packing and preparing your luggage for an upcoming trip can be boring. Read on if you want to master the art of packing a suitcase once and for all.
Write a packing list
Whether you can pack a suitcase in 10 minutes flat or it takes you days to finish packing all those last-minute essentials, creating a packing list is the easiest way to afford some peace of mind. ★ 36 It's also useful for insurance purposes when luggage is lost or damaged.
Gather everything before getting started
★★★ 37 Gather all the items you intend to pack together before even beginning to place them in your suitcase. Have them all folded, rolled or ready to hang. ★★★ 38 While you're gathering everything, be sure to keep in mind the size of your bag.
Place larger items in your bag first
You'll want to pack the larger items first, such as jackets, trousers, dresses and shirts. Instead of folding them, it really helps to place them around the sides of the bottom of the case. ★★ 39 The longer larger items can then be folded over to cover everything else that's inside and hold it all neatly in place.
Pack your day-to-day essentials at the top
Everything you need on the first day or two of your trip should be packed towards the top of your suitcase. ★★ 40 This is especially true with your toiletry bag, medicine and any other items. Ensuring all these day-to-day essentials sit at the very top will allow you to grab what you need without disturbing your other items.
- Thus, nothing is left behind.
- This is useful when packing for the return trip.
- You can space out all items properly and efficiently.
- You'll be looking for as soon as you check in to your hotel.
- The other smaller items can be placed in the middle on top.
- Don't put in your items here and there as you think of them.
- Otherwise, you will have to dig through all of your other clothes.

A PAIR OF NEW SHOES
Anne is six years older than me. Growing up, we were very poor, and my mother worked evenings at a factory in a small mid-western town. Not seeing my mother much, Anne took over much of the maternal(慈母般的) support, and she was awarded the authority to give me and my younger sister permission to do things. Actually, asking Anne for help was much better than asking a parent as she could award permission, but never had an urge to punish us when we broke the rules. Therefore, we were a bit more willing to talk to Anne and sometimes benefited from her sisterly advice. During those difficult teenage years, Anne was always there for me, not only as a big sister, but as a mother and my best friend.
When I was seventeen and had no money, I thought my only chance of going to college was if I could win a scholarship. I had an important interview for such an award. Anne at that time was struggling surviving on a part-time job. I told her of my interview, that General Motors was sending me a bus ticket, and I would get to visit the city for my scholarship interview. It would be the first time I ever saw a city. I was excited about the adventure and asked her advice on what to wear. I showed her my best outfit and how I planned to be careful, how I sat so that the hole in the bottom of my shoe would not be seen, but I wasn't sure what I would do if it rained. I showed her how I would stand with my arm slightly in front of me to hide the blemish(瑕疵) of my inferior pants. My best blouse was a find at a yard sale, slightly faded but still pretty.
Anne suggested that we go shopping, and we took the bus to the Penney Store. She took me to the shoe department, and we found a beautiful pair of leather shoes on sale. She told me to try them on, but I thought it was just for fun as neither of us had ever owned anything that expensive before.
Paragraph 1:
Sometimes we did go shopping together and tried on things just to see what they looked and felt like.
Paragraph 2:
I wore my beautiful new shoes to the interview and won the scholarship.
