Peple used t see lts f plastics n the sea surface. Nw in a study, researchers have fund that the micrplastic pllutin in deep water is much mre serius than that n the sea surface. “What we've knwn abut micrplastic has been frm the sea surface," says Kyle Van Hutan, "but this study suggests there's a larger amunt that's unnticed."
Micrplastics are small pieces that break frm plastic bttles r bags as they change t simpler chemical frms in the envirnment. They have different sizes and can be fund anywhere, including in the ceans, lakes,
sil and even blwing in the air.
T study micrplastic pllutin in deep sea, Hutan's team cllected samples (样本) in the sea by using a ROV ( 遙 控 潜 水 器 ). As the ROV went dwn frm 5 t 1,000 meters belw the sea surface, a specially-designed machine filtered (过滤) the sample water and kept the small particles (微粒). Back in the lab, the team used a special machine t find ut the types f plastic present.
Althugh the researchers fund micrplastic was everywhere, the amunt f the particles was nt evenly spread in the water. The midwater, 180 t 460 meters belw the surface, held the highest amunt f micrplastic pllutin, abut fur times as much as n the surface. Van Hutan thinks this may be because when plastic breaks dwn int ever- smaller pieces, they are cvered with bilgical material, which causes them t g dwn int the deep-sea area.
Their findings are based nly n a certain area, and if the results hld fr the wider cean envirnment, the amunt f plastic in the midwater wuld be wrrying, because this is key living envirnment fr mst sea animals. These particles, which have harmful chemicals, can g int the fd webs at bth the cean's surface and seaflr, and can influence reprductin f sea animals. The final effect remains unknwn, but what is fr
certain, Hutan says, is that "this is a serius prblem, and it shws humans can change natural systems."
Yet in ther ways, “the results are encuraging," he says. Since mst f the micrplastic waste cmes frm single-use plastic, this means we culd reduce micrplastic pllutin by cutting dwn n the prductin and use f the unnecessary plastic prducts.
Hutan's team used ROV t .
filter the sample water
cllect samples in the sea
examine the chemicals
recrd the depth f water
What can we learn frm the study mentined in the passage?
The sea surface is the mst seriusly plluted.
Deep-sea animals will die ut in the near future.
The midwater hlds the mst micrplastic particles.
Bilgical material destrys the fd webs in deep sea.
What is the writer’s main purpse in wring this passage?
T remind peple t reduce plastic waste.
T explain causes f micrplastic pllutin.
T intrduce changes in the cean ecsystem.
T advise peple t recycle single-use prducts.

Next time a custmer cmes t yur ffice, ffer him a cup f cffee. And when yu’re ding yur hliday shpping nline, make sure yu’re hlding a large glass f iced tea. The physical sensatin(感觉)f warmth encurages emtinal warmth, while a cld drink in hand prevents yu frm making unwise decisins – thse are the practical lessn being drawn frm recent research by psychlgist Jhn A. Bargh.
Psychlgists have knwn that ne persn’s feelings f anther’s “warmth” is a pwerful factr in scial relatinships. Judging smene t be either “warm” r “cld” is an imprtant thing needed t be thught abut carefully, even there are studies shwing that a “cld” persn may be mre skillful. Much f this is deep int very early childhd experiences, Bargh argues, when babies’ sense f the wrld arund them is shaped by physical sensatins, especially warmth and cldness. Classic studies by Harry Harlw, published in 1958, shwed mnkeys preferred t stay clse t a clth “mther” rather than ne made f wire, even when the wire “mther” carried a fd bttle. Harlw’s wrk and later studies have led psychlgists t give strength t the need fr warm physical tuch frm caregivers t help yung children grw int healthy adults with nrmal
scial skills.
Feelings f “warmth” and “cldness” in scial judgments appear t be universal. Althugh n wrldwide study has been dne, Bargh says that describing peple as “warm” r “cld” is cmmn t many cultures, and studies have fund thse sensatins influence judgment in many cuntries.
T test the relatinship between physical and psychlgical warmth, Bargh did an experiment in which 41 cllege students tk part in. A research assistant handed the students either a ht cup f cffee, r a cld drink, t hld while the researcher filled ut a shrt infrmatin frm: The drink was then handed back. After that, the students were asked t rate(评估)the persnality f “Persn A” based n the descriptin. Thse wh had just held the warm drink thught Persn A as warmer than thse wh had held the iced drink.
Accrding t Paragraph 1, a persn’s emtin may be affected by .
A. the visitrs t his fficeB. the psychlgy lessns he has
C. his physical feeling f cldness D. the things he has bught nline
The writer mentins Harlw’s experiment t shw that .
A. adults shuld develp scial skills B. babies need warm physical tuch
C. caregivers shuld be healthy adults D. mnkeys have scial relatinships
It can be inferred frm the passage that .
feelings f warmth and cldness are studied wrldwide
scial skills d nt cme frm physical experiences
physical temperature influences hw we see thers
skillful persns are ften cld t thers
What wuld be the best title fr the passage?
Drinking fr Better Scial Relatinships.
Develping Better Drinking Habits.
Experiments f Persnal Emtin.
Physical Sensatins and Emtins.
四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 10 分,每小题 2 分)
If yu’re ging t travel the wrld this summer, yu shuld make up a travel budget ( 预 算 ) befre yu hit the rad. This budget will help yu knw hw much yu need t save befre leaving hme s that yu dn’t need t call mm and dad, begging fr help halfway thrugh yur trip. Here are three tips t help yu plan yur mney fr the trip yu have planned fr this summer vacatin.
Pick a lcatin that fits yur budget
The cuntries yu chse t visit will have the greatest influence n the necessary size f yur travel budget. Rad tripping acrss America r backpacking thrugh Eurpe, while ppular, are tw f the mre expensive chices fr a vacatin. In cntrast, a visit t Asia r Suth America will be much less expensive than back hme.
“Fun” activities are expensive
It seems t be necessary t plan yur travel budget arund three majr csts…
Transprtatin
Htels
Fd
Paying fr these necessities is part f travel, but yu might be surprised t learn that they culd add up t less than half f the mney yu’ll spend abrad. If yu’re like me, yur “dream vacatin” includes mre than sitting in yur htel bed.
When I was living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I wned a small apartment and ate delicius Asian ndles 3
times per day. With the rm at $5 per night and meals fr $1, I spent abut $8 per day.
One f the clest things t d in Chiang Mai is t g n a zip line adventure. It cst me $60 t get int the trees, which is abut what I paid t live fr 1 week in Thailand. If yu want t g n an excursin (远足) every day, yu’ll easily spend five times as much n “fun” as yu d n necessities. This is true all ver the wrld, s make sure yu plan excursins int yur travel budget ahead f time.
Plan fr the unexpected
Yu wn’t always be prepared fr everything that cmes yur way while traveling. Yu need at least
$1,000 t help yu deal with the unexpected.
First, there’s the gd kind f unexpected…
When I was traveling thrugh France n my summer vacatin three years ag, I had n idea that the annual bull running festival (奔牛节) was happening in Spain. A traveler wh had just arrived frm Spain tld me abut the festival and because I had sme extra mney I was able t change my plans and attend!
There’s als the bad kind f unexpected…
When I entered Thailand, I frgt my visa expiratin date ( 签证截止日期). I ended up verstaying by nearly 1 mnth! When I crssed the brder ( 边 境 ), I was plitely tld I needed t pay the Thai gvernment nearly $400!
Giving yurself sme extra mney is very imprtant t yur safety and the enjyment f yur trip.
What shuld yu d if yu’re ging t travel the wrld?
Hw much did the writer spend getting int the trees in Thailand?
Why culd the writer attend the annual bull running festival?
D yu think it is a gd idea t make a budget befre travelling? Why? (List at least tw reasns)
