In all the world’s cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music.Experts are finding that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.
Music education has received a lot of attention.Learning to play an instrument can help children improve maths, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked children’s IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes use several areas of the brain, increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial(空间的) reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving maths problems like fractions(分数).
Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memory. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, connects music with memories stored in two other areas:the amygdale and hippocampus. That’s why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago.For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer’s,listening to music can help unlock buried memories by strengthening musical pathways to memories.
With the evidence of music’s benefits pouring in,it’s no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education systems.People are recognizing that more than just a form of entertainment, music is also great for the brain.
    24.Why are scientists studying music?
A.Because music can be used for medical treatments.
B.Because music plays a very important role in our lives.
C.Because our brains can process music in different ways.
D.Because music education has received a lot of attention.
25.According to the Canadian study, which children had increased IQ scores?
A.Those who already had high IQs.
B.Those who had always played music.
C.Those who could not play any instrument.
D.Those who studied music for a period of time.
26.Which of the following is a kind of disease?
    A.Spatial reasoning. B.Alzheimer’s.
C.The amygdale and hippocampus. D.The medial prefrontal cortex.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Music and health B.Music and the mind

    (2023湖南六校联考)
Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question,we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historic buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons why they should be preserved. So,let us assume that historic buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style.Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours, where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much,it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in,but the same can be said of some old buildings too.Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas.I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的) and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings,I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before,we would all still be living in caves. Thus,I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
28.What can we learn about historical buildings from paragraph 1?
A.All of them are not attractive.
B.Most of them are hard to preserve.
C.People want to preserve the historic feel.
D.They are more pleasing than modern ones.
29.What is the author’s attitude to coexistence of old buildings and new ones?
    A.Doubtful. B.Unclear.
    C.Conservative. D.Favorable.
30.What does the phrase “move things forward” in the last paragraph refer to?
    A.Destroy old buildings.
B.Put things in a different place.
    C.Choose new architectural styles.
D.Respect people’s feelings for historic buildings.
31.What is the main purpose of the text?
    A.To instruct. B.To argue.
    C.To warn. D.To educate.

As an open-minded parent of a 7-year-old boy,I find out that “yes” is the word I say most frequently in life.I do this because “yes” is a sign of positive living.Saying “yes” means opening myself up to new experiences and inviting new or deeper relationships. However, too much “yes” may leave any one of us feeling powerless to set and keep boundaries(界限) in our lives.
This had been on my mind when TheBookofNo came across my desk. The book is rich, readable and useful to people who have difficulty in saying “no”.
Susan Newman, the writer of the book, calls people who keep saying “yes” through life “people-pleasers”.Those people often hold long-term expectations that they will care for others and feel sorry to even speak out their own needs when a request comes their way.For people-pleasers,saying “yes” is the way to avoid breaking their relationship with the asker.
So how can we say “no”?TheBookofNo offers short and simple dialogues for hundreds of situations in which “no” is the right answer. After reading the book,I realised the things that started helping me improve my “no” skills.
For one thing, the “no” dialogues seldom include “I’m sorry” language.Instead, they are simple and clear sentences like “No,I don’t want to go” or “Not without everyone’s help”.I also noticed the sentences generally don’t ask us to say “I can’t”.Instead, they say “I prefer not to...”,“I’m not in a position(职位) to...”,or “It won’t work for me to...”.These expressions pay more attention to the person’s needs, not to his ability to respond(回应) to a request.
Do you think this book might be helpful to you? It’s OK if the answer is “no”,but I do highly suggest it for your Positive Reading List shelf.
32.What does the author think of “yes”?
A.Saying “yes” too much is unwise.
B.“Yes” means more possibility to others.
C.“Yes” gives us power to decide our own life.
D.People should say “yes” as much as possible.
    33.What are people-pleasers like?
A.They put others ahead of themselves. B.They are popular among people.
C.They often ask others for help. D.They are positive in life.
34.What should you say if you don’t want to go to a party according to Newman?
    A.I can’t. B.I’m sorry.
    C.I don’t want to go. D.Not without everyone’s help.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.“Yes” and “No” B.Ways of Positive Living
C.Reasons Why We Should Say “No” D.Positive Reading List:TheBookofNo

Once, when I was a teenager,my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏).Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me.There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved,all of them standing in line,two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be.The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say,“You are my knight in shining armor.”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say,“You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded,“Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand. Her head dropped, and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked,“How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understood how the kids would feel.I felt sorry for them.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。作者喜欢打篮球,但因为是女孩而被父母阻止,被男孩笑话,曾经放弃过打篮球的想法。直到上高中时在一些爱好打篮球的朋友的鼓励下,作者又回到了篮球场,因此找到了自信和幸福,并且还学到了其他的东西,作者坚信世上无难事,只要自己不放弃。
    41.C 根据上文silentlywatch和reallyenvied以及下文“Basketballisnotfitforgirls”可知,作者一度认为自己作为女孩永远(never)不能打篮球。
    42.D 根据句意和本句的时态为现在完成时可以判断,应用since。
    43.B 作者小时候可以自由打篮球,因为那时候作者还小没有人会在意(cared)。
    44.C 由后句“Basketballisnotfitforgirls”可知,在家里父母也不让作者打篮球。分析选项可知,encourage,agree,permit都需要接带to的不定式,只有C项可构成letsbdo结构。
    45.D 由前一句可知,不仅父母不同意作者打篮球,甚至(Even)一些男生也有这种想法。
    46.B 由上文可知,学校不准、家庭不让及男孩不理解使作者打篮球的梦想根本无法实现,因此作者感到心情沮丧。feeldown引申为“感觉沮丧的”。
    47.C 上文表明作者本来对打篮球已经不抱希望了,下文即讲述作者在新朋友的鼓励下重新开始打篮球,这一转机对作者来说是意料之外的(Unexpectedly)。
    48.A 根据下文叙述,作者又开始打篮球,由此可知,新朋友们鼓励(encouraged)作者回到篮球场。
    49.B 句意为:走自己的路(way),让别人去说吧。
    50.A 本文话题是篮球与女生,因此该空应填basketball。
    51.D 在朋友们的鼓励与引导下,作者又找回(returned)了自信和对篮球的热情。
    52.C 句意为:通过打篮球,作者不但感到快乐和自信,而且还学(learn)到很多东西。
    53.B 根据下文“Nevergiveupandyou’llmakeitsoonerorlater.”可知,不能放弃,要坚持的是自己的目标(aim)。
    54.C 句意为:你要设立一个目标,然后自信地一直走下去(keepgoing)。
    55.B 作者喜欢NBA的格言,它能表达(express)作者对篮球的强烈感情。
    【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。根据美国法律10至15岁的孩子可以通过暑假打工或者帮别人做一些生活中的小事,例如打扫卫生、看孩子、遛狗等,来挣钱。通过做这些事情,孩子们不但挣到了钱,还学会了日常生活的必备技能,同时也体会到了自己通过劳动挣钱的乐趣。
    56.on 考查介词。短语onweekends意为“在周末”,故填on。
    57.hours 考查名词的数。hour是可数名词,前面是40,故此处用复数形式,故填hours。
    58.younger 考查形容词比较级。此处应填形容词作表语,根据than判断用比较级形式,故填younger。
    59.who/that 考查定语从句。分析句子结构可知,此处是定语从句关系词,先行词kids在从句中充当主语,故用指人的关系代词who/that,故填who/that。
    60.cleaning 考查非谓语动词。此处应填动词的-ing形式作介词by的宾语,故填cleaning。
    61.them 考查代词。they指代dogsweaters,此处应用宾格形式作为sell的宾语,故填them。
    62.todraw 考查固定短语。短语asksbtodosth意为“要求某人做某事”,故填todraw。
    63.is 考查时态。根据下文的are判断,此处为一般现在时,earning为动词的-ing形式作主语,看作第三人称单数,故填is。
    64.However 考查副词。句意:然而,通过自己劳动挣的5美元比问别人要的20美元拿在手里的感觉要好很多。此处应填副词修饰后面整个句子,再结合语境可知上下文为转折关系,故填However。
    65.probably 考查副词。此处应填副词修饰动词make,故填probably。
    写作
    第一节
    Dear Steven,
How are you?I’m writing to tell you my lifestyle in the new school.
Our school is very beautiful with a big playground. There are green trees and all kinds of sweet flowers all the year round. The teachers are very strict with us in study, but after class, they are friendly and care about us very much.My new classmates are all very excellent and always work very hard. They help me a lot with my lessons as well as many things in my daily life and we get along quite well with each other.
Though the school life is stressful,I am full of confidence.I think with the help of the teachers and classmates,I will make great progress.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节
Seeingwhatwasgoingon,mydadputhishandinhispocket,pulledouta$20 billanddroppeditontheground. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said,“Excuse me,sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on.He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip shaking and a tear running down his cheek,he replied,“Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
ThatdaymyfatherandIwentbacktoourcaranddrovehomewithoutanytickets. We didn’t go to the circus that night. When I asked Dad why he did so,Dad said,“My child,it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father.Surely he wasn’t begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.” He paused for a while,as if wandering in his memory.“We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we didn’t go without anything. Now,do you want an ice cream?”
