One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift.Unlike other gifts,it came without wrap(包装).
On September 11th,1958,Mom gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying,“I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honour!I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own.I played with it day and night.I sang to it.I told it stories.I told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however,I found its bed empty. My doll was gone!I cried for it.Mom wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days,I heard Mom and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”“pitiful”,and “dying”,which sounded ominous.
Christmas was coming.“Don’t expect any presents this year,” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room.“If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears.I’d never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning.Dad jumped out of bed to answer it.From my bedroom I heard him say,“What? He’s all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs.“The hospital said we can bring Richard home!”
“Thank God!” I heard Mom cry.
From the upstairs window,I watched my parents rush out to the car.I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day!My baby doll would be home.I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty;they were filled with love!

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal.Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work,it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”,usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion;instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better,I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture,we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems.Certainly,English and German cultures share similar values;however,Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude.In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However,if we can understand them better,a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance to us to learn from each other.
28.In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to .
A.develop closer relations B.share the same culture
C.get to know each other D.keep each other company
29.The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that .
A.the English prefer to make long speeches
B.too many words are of no use
C.people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature
D.even talk and silence can be culturally different
30.According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?
A.By sharing different ways of life. B.By accepting different habits.
C.By recognizing different values. D.By speaking each other’s languages.
31.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Multicultural Environment B.Cross-Cultural Differences
C.How to Understand Each Other D.How to Build Up a Relationship

You can deal with winter in two ways:Escape it or embrace it.Watching people dive into snow—in nothing but bathing suits and boots—I’m guessing these people choose to do the latter.
The seasonal madness is part of the Quebec Winter Carnival, now in its 63rd year, said to be the world’s largest winter festival.About a half-million people each year come to Quebec City to delight in frigid(寒冷的) fashion.
“We embrace winter,” said Paule Bergeron of Quebec City Tourism.“It’s time to play.” The carnival runs from Jan.29 to Feb.14,with dozens of events.I went last year for a few frigid days, staying at the Hilton Quebec,in the thick of the downtown action.Families are a big part of the carnival. What attract kids are things like ice-fishing at a man-made pond stocked with fish, where if you catch something, you can pay to have it smoked and eat it,or donate it to a food bank.
It’s a good chance to experience the culture of this European-feeling city, and nowhere is more evident than in Bonhomme, the carnival’s goodwill ambassador,a living avatar(化身) in the form of a giant snowman with a human inside gliding(滑行) around the festivities.
There are two night parades at the carnival.I attended the second one last year, the night before the carnival’s close. The streets were lined with thousands of people in a gentle snow and bitter cold, watching local dancers and school groups glide by.In the end,Bonhomme’s float came into view, and kids in the crowd went crazy. As the parade ended, thousands followed behind it,becoming part of the Quebec Winter Carnival’s magic and madness. And with a cup of milk in my hand,I realized that for once, not only did I not mind winter,I embraced it.
32.Which of the following is TRUE about the Quebec Winter Carnival?
A.It is held to attract visitors. B.It has a history of less than 60 years.
C.It is mainly intended to entertain kids. D.It is the largest winter festival in the world.
33.Who is Bonhomme?
A.It is a giant snowman.
B.It is a famous star in Quebec.
C.It is the goodwill ambassador of the carnival.
D.It is the organizer of the Quebec Winter Carnival.
34.What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Kids love to see Bonhomme.
B.The carnival ends with two parades.
C.The parades are the maddest part of the carnival.
D.People attend the parades mainly to see Bonhomme.
35.The author attended the carnival probably as .
A.a visitor to Quebec B.a festival performer
C.an official in Quebec D.a local newspaper reporter
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
HowtoRealizeYourPotential
I’ve always wanted to reach my full potential and abilities.I want to tell you about four changes I made—and you can make—to reach your highest potential:
Write down your goals.
You set these goals.Don’t let anybody else tell you what your goals should be.Think of success like breathing air;your last breath is important, but it’s your next breath that’s important.Goals keep you focused on what’s next. 36
Choose things just out of reach.
Don’t just think about what is “realistic”.The problem with realistic thinking is that it’s usually based on what others think is possible. 37 Whenever you start a task with a mind toward the potential outcome, you will limit the actions required to realize that goal.
38
Never do anything normal.Take massive action until one day it is a habit for you.People will ask you:“Why are you still out this late? What are you doing calling on a Saturday? You never quit,do you?” 39 Big goals require big actions.Reaching your full potential requires massive actions.
Stay persistent(坚持).
How do you get a nail in a wall? You hit it over and over again. 40 The ability to persist on your path is a secret common to those who make it.Reaching your potential requires you to be persistent.
A.Take massive action.
B.And even “What are you on?”
C.Rome wasn’t built in a day.
D.They don’t know your potential.
E.Don’t let anyone else judge your success.
F.And writing them down keeps you on track.
G.How much success have you got in your life?

I lived a life with the belief that if you don’t expect much from the world it won’t disappoint you,and for a while I was right. And then I met Liam. His uniquely colored green eyes would stare into mine and completely cleared every drop of pessimism(悲观情绪) I had.
“Cara, get up,” he whispered in my ear,his face lighting up as I looked up at him.“It’s still too early,” I complained, begging him to allow me five more minutes of sleep.“I have to get to work, honey.” He kissed my cheek gently before getting up.
Liam had never been a rich man,but his love was much wealthier than I could ever imagine. He’d fill my head with his fantasy stories of rebirth.Every single night he’d whisper in my ear that we’d be together for all of afterlife and that he would always come back for me.Being a Christian,I’d laugh at his foolishness and roll my eyes.
“Bye.Have fun at work.” I answered and he responded(回复) with a quick snort.I took myself out of bed and took a shower.
The phone rang.I checked my voicemail just in case—one new voicemail message:“Hello?Cara Foster?I regret to inform you your unmarried husband,Liam Hensworth, died in a car crash this evening, and please call if you need anything.” I stood dumbfounded(惊呆的) as I stared at the screen.I said to myself,“Liam died? This must be some sort of mix-up,and this can’t be possible.I’m dreaming.”
No.I was not dreaming.Tears ran down my face as I absorbed(理解) the information. How could the world take him away from me?I burst into tears.
Three months later,my heart still hurt on occasion.Seeing the color of tropical pictures didn’t help either, and the strange ducks of the sea only reminded me of him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
I saw the geese swimming in the water, making whispers to each other, like Liam to me.
Just then I heard someone calling me.

M:Oh,I don’t do anything special.I don’t go out with friends or go to the cinema.I just read books at home.
(Text3)
W:The food in this restaurant doesn’t taste good.I’d rather eat in the school’s dining hall.
M:But the food isn’t everything.Isn’t it pleasant to have dinner with light music, without people sitting around you laughing and talking loudly?
(Text4)
W:Let’s go to the beach this afternoon, shall we?
M:I’d love to,but I’ve promised Jake I’d take him to the zoo.He has a class project about animals.

(Text6)
W:What’s going on between you and Charlie?Did you have a fight or something?
M:No,but I can’t stand him anymore. He’s the worst roommate I’ve ever had.He never cleans up and he’s always listening to loud music when I try to get some sleep.
W:Why don’t you have a heart-to-heart talk with him?
M:I tried,but it didn’t work.
W:Maybe you can talk to him. After all,you are his good friend.
(Text7)
M:Hello, what seems to be the problem?
W:Well,I’m preparing for my exams, and I’ve been up late studying these days. This morning,I got up very early to do some work, and I fell onto the floor and hit my head.I came to life after a few seconds.
M:Have you ever had any other signs of sickness?
W:I’ve been pretty nervous, and my eyes hurt sometimes.Should I take some medicine?
M:Well,it sounds as if you’ve probably been overdoing your studying and you’re too tired.I don’t think there’s anything to worry about, and I think you should take it easy for a while and try to get plenty of sleep.
W:Yes,I haven’t been getting much sleep lately. And I also need more fresh air.
(Text8)
M:Have you visited the new library yet,Kate? It opened last week!

W:And can you work on computers there?
M:Yes.They’ve got a computer lab on the third floor. It was the first time my cousin had seen anything like that.
W:Wow!That’s great.Did you both get library cards?
M:Not yet.They are free,but we didn’t take our student cards,so we couldn’t sign up.

M:Well,it’s between 100 and 200 metres from here. It’s very close.
W:I see.Maybe we can go there together this weekend.
(Text9)

M:If you like art history,why don’t you do art?Mr Harris teaches that,and he’s really easy-going.
W:Yeah, but I’m hopeless at drawing and painting.I like looking at it more than actually doing it.Maybe a foreign language?I’ve always wanted to learn French.
M:Well, there’s a new teacher for French this term—Mrs Brown.I can’t tell you what she’s like, but she looks okay.
W:I don’t really want to risk it.
M:How about Miss Williams?I’ve had her for geography before, and she’s really interesting.
W:But her class is already full.I guess only German is left.Doesn’t Mr Smith teach that?He seems friendly enough.
M:Yeah, but he only teaches the advanced classes. If you want to do level one German, you’d end up with Mr Jones, and he’s very strict.
W:Oh,dear.I guess I’ll do the same class as last year.At least, the subject’s OK.
(Text10)
Hello, everybody! This is the first day of class,so we are going to give some introductions.First of all,my name is Colin Weaver. You can call me Professor Weaver. This is my helper Liz,who will grade your papers. Now,let’s preview what this class is about. It’s about science in ancient Greece and Rome.I know you think that science is something created in modern times, but people have been studying things like that for a very long time.Much of what we know now is based on what the ancient Greeks and Romans found out. This includes electricity and even some knowledge about stars. One ancient Greek calculated the size of the earth very correctly. And yes, many Greeks believed the earth was round.A huge amount of the math we use today was worked out by people like Archimedes—a smart man.You will learn more about ancient Greece and Rome in this class. All right...any questions, please?OK.That boy over there...

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
I saw the geese swimming in the water, making whispers to each other, like Liam to me.
Just then I heard someone calling me.

W:No.But I heard about it the day before yesterday.
M:My cousin and I went there yesterday.
W:What’s it like,Robert?
M:Well, the building doesn’t look very modern, but it’s really tall and bright.
W:Where is the library?
M:Well,it’s between 100 and 200 metres from here. It’s very close.
W:I see.Maybe we can go there together this weekend.
(Text9)
W:Hi,Bill.I’m having trouble deciding which class to take this term.Last term,I had a really horrible teacher for art history—Ms Taylor.
