A
As I walked into the primary school, I looked down at my new black shoes. I stood at Mrs Blackstone’s door. Before I tried the great escape, the door opened. “We’ve been waiting for you!” Mrs Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher, said loudly. With a smile my mom walked away and I was left taking centre stage in front of a group of students.
Over the next few days, Mrs Blackstone made it her job to find me a new best friend. During history lessons, when I didn’t want to speak in front of the class, she’d not only call on me but have me stand up to address my classmates.
One spring afternoon, Mrs Blackstone asked me to stay after class. “I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.” My mind raced. Had I got a bad grade? Had I hurt anyone’s feelings? “Are you enjoying your new school?” She sat comfortably behind her desk. “I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.” She continued, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, and the kindness you show—I think you have great potential(潜力) to be something important.” I listened carefully to every word. “I have been a teacher for over twenty-five years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important. Remember that and you’ll go far,” she said.
Her voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out of her office, not staring at my shoes, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me! Years later, her words still remain inside of me.
1. Why did the author go to school unwillingly?
A. She didn’t like the school at all.
B. She often got bad grades at school.
C. She was treated badly by her classmates.
D. She wasn’t used to the new environment.
根据第一段中“With a smile my mom walked away and I was left taking centre stage in front of a group of students.”和第三段中“Are you enjoying your new school?”
2. What’s the author’s feeling when she was asked to stay after class?
A. Annoyed. B. Embarrassed.
C. Tired. D. Nervous.
Had I got a bad grade? Had I hurt anyone’s feelings?”
3. What was the purpose of Mrs Blackstone having a good talk with the author?
A. To tell the author her potential.
B. To encourage the author to believe in herself.
C. To help the author to realise her mistakes.
D. To make the author feel cared and loved.
根据第三段老师说的“I see something special in you ... Remember that and you’ll go far”可知,老师说作者有特殊的潜力,鼓励作者相信自己。
4. What can we learn from the text?
A. The author came from a poor family.
B. The teacher sang a song to the author.
C. The author never forgets what the teacher said.
D. The author no longer cared for anybody but herself.
根据最后一段中“Years later, her words still remain inside of me.”

B
After entering high school, you must wonder how to study well. Here are some good skills for you.
Go to class. If you want to do well at school, going to class is the first step in studying well. If you miss classes, you will miss what the teacher thinks is important. As a result, you’ll miss what is the most likely to end up on the test. 5.
Take good notes. Try not to write down everything. 6. Write
down unfamiliar terms. After class, review your notes as soon as possible. You can fill in details that you missed and review the material while it is still fresh in your mind.
7. If you are struggling in class, talk to your teacher. He or she may be able to give you more help before or after class. Most teachers have little sympathy(同情)for students who just become worried about failing during the last few weeks of the grading period.
Take part in class discussions. 8. Asking questions and having eye contact with your teachers and classmates can increase your participation(参与)and your focus during the class discussion. If the material is difficult, you’d better read it before class. This helps you make your point clear in class.
Form study groups. Get students together who want to do well in class. Make sure that everyone is familiar with the material because you do not want to spend time reteaching the material to people who do not understand it. 9. Sometimes group sessions(上课时间)can become chatting sessions.
A. But be careful!
B. Don’t be late for your class.
C. Talk to your teacher if you need help.
D. You should write down all the new terms.
E. So if you want to study well, go to every class.
F. All you need is to put down the main points in your own words.
G. In order to learn more in class, it is helpful to take part in class discussions.
5. 解析:根据上文“If you want to do well at school, going to class is the first step in studying well.” E项“So if you want to study well, go to every class.”
F项“All you need is to put down the main points in your own words.”(你需要做的是用你自己的话把要点记下来。)
7. 解析:根据下文“If you are struggling in class, talk to your teacher. He or she may be able to give you more help before or after class.”(如果你在课堂上遇到困难,和你的老师谈谈。 可知,C项“Talk to your teacher if you need help.”(如果你需要帮助,就和老师谈谈。)
8. 解析:根据本段第一句“Take part in class discussions.” 所以G项“In order to learn more in class, it is helpful to take part in class discussions.”(为了在课堂上学到更多东西,参加课堂讨论是有帮助的。)
故选A。
答案:A
A crow lived in a thick forest filled with many birds. The crow was very happy with his carefree life until he saw a swan one day. The swan was flying over a lake. “This swan is so white,” he thought, “and I am so black. It must be the happiest bird in the world.”He shared his thoughts with the swan. “Actually,” the swan replied, “I thought so, too, until I met a parrot. It had brilliant colours of red and blue. No other bird could be happier than the parrot.”
The crow went off in search of the parrot and found it resting on the top of an old tree. The parrot explained, “I,too, was very happy until I chanced upon a peacock. My colours paled in comparison to the peacock’s. Its rich colours put my coat to shame.”
Curiosity defeated the crow, who was determined to look for the beautiful peacock. He finally found the peacock in the zoo. Hundreds of people gathered around to watch the peacock and its beautiful feathers.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
After the crowd had left, the crow rested itself on a rock and said, “Dear peacock, you are so beautiful. Every day, people come just to see you. People either drive me away or avoid me when they see me. You must be the happiest bird on the planet.”
The peacock replied, “My beauty has forced me to be kept in this zoo. In the first few months I spent here, I often thought to myself that if I were a crow, I could be enjoying a carefree life outside. Then, after many months of struggling, I have come to realize that I need to learn to be happy with what I have instead of expecting what I do not have. I am happy because I am satisfied with my life here.”
