Charles Richard Drew’s great invention directly contributed to saving thousands of lives during World WarⅡ and continues to contribute to the life-saving work of the entire world of medicine later.

Born in 1904, Drew was the eldest of five children. He was intelligent and showed a talent for studies and sports from a young age. In 1922, his athletic ability earned him an athletic scholarship to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts. Drew graduated from Amherst College in 1926. In 1928 he applied to medical schools and was admitted to MeGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his medical degree and master’s degree in surgery in 1933.

Upon graduation, as an internship (实习生), he began to look at issues related to blood transfusions.

When he began his doctoral studies at Columbia University, with a physician named John Scudder, Drew continued his research in the field of blood transfusion. The two have jointly conducted research into blood preservation and fluid replacement, leading to the development of an experimental blood bank, which ran smoothly for seven months.

Drew’s breakthroughs in blood preservation were timely, as the World War II was raging in Europe at the time. Under Drew’s direction, his team has developed new ways to extract, preserve and transport plasma (血浆) on a large scale.

Following the success of the “Blood for Britain” program, Drew was appointed the assistant director for the US blood banking system. During this time, he built a number of mobile blood donation stations, later known as blood delivery stations.

On April 1, 1950, tragedy struck. Drew was injured in a serious car accident while on his way to a conference and died from his injuries. Many medical colleges and schools have been named after him to honor his contribution.

    C. Caring and brave.      D. Talented and committed.

26 Why are many colleges and schools named after Charles Richard Drew?

    A. Because he has made great contribution to medical science.

    B. Because he alone finished the research in the field of blood transfusion.

    C. Because his contribution has changed the process of the World War Ⅱ.

    D. Because he died in a tragedy car accident on his way to conference.

    27. Which category can this article be?

With needle-like teeth and sharp pointed nose, a gray nurse shark isn’t a creature that most people would want to meet. But Shalise Leesfield isn’t one of them.

The Australian teenager couldn’t think of a better creature to meet when scuba diving off the coast of South West Rocks, near her home in Port Macquarie, a coastal town north of Sydney.

“Many people say gray nurse sharks look frightening, but I think they are the sweetest animals ever,” she says.

The slow-moving sharks, which like to stay near the sea floor in warm, shallow waters, are — for the most part — harmless to humans. But the gray nurse shark is under threat. Populations have fallen and habitats have been lost due to ocean warming and human development, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which lists the species as seriously endangered.

One area where they can still be seen is Fish Rock, an underwater cavern (洞穴) with a unique ecosystem, 40 miles up the coast from Leesfield’s home. But fishers are allowed access within 200 meters of Fish Rock. This is leading to a drop in the number of gray nurse sharks and increased pollution, says Leesfield. She wants to enlarge the no-fishing area, establishing a protected zone.

With Leesfield’s efforts, the area has been nominated as a Hope Spot, which is part of the mission Blue program launched by famous oceanographer Sylvia Earle that identifies places as critically important to the ocean’s health and supports protection.

“When people think about Hope Spots, they think about Sydney Harbour or the Great Barrier Reef. So to get Fish Rock up on that list is just such incredible news,” she says.

Now, Leesfield is working with politician Cate Faehrmann, marine spokesperson for the Australian Greens party in New South Wales, to legalize protection of the sharks and make the no-fishing zone protected by the law.

    28. What does “them” refer to in the first paragraph?

    A. Gray nurse sharks.     B. Common people.

    C. People fearing gray nurse sharks. D. Fishers.

    29. What has led to gray nurse sharks’ being seriously endangered?

    A. The development of tourism in the ocean.

    B. The sharks’ preference to stay in shallow waters.

    C. The feature of gray nurse sharks’ slow-moving.

    D. Fishers’ being permitted within 200 meters of Fish Rock.

    30. What will Leesfield and Faehrmann do to protect gray nurse sharks?

    A. Recommend the Fish Rock as a Hope Spot being protected.

    B. Identify the Hope Spot area as being critically important.

    C. Make Fish Rock more popular among fishers nearby.

    D. Make laws to protect the no-fishing zone near Fish Rock.

    31. Which might be the best title of the article?

    A. The Australian teenager is on a mission to protect sharks

    B. Increased pollution leads to gray sharks endangered

    C. Gray nurse sharks are in danger!

    D. Let’s establish a protected zone!

    D

Cyberbullying (网络霸凌) has become quite severe across the United States. But what exactly is cyber-bullying? It’s when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses (侵扰), humiliates (羞辱), mistreats, makes fun of, or threatens another person online or while using cell phones or other electronic devices.

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 59% of U. S. teens have experienced at least one of six identified types of abusive online behaviors. Those behaviors include name-calling (42%), having false rumors spread about them on the internet (32%), receiving explicit images that they didn’t ask for (25%), or being the target of physical threats (16%).

The peers of some teens have even posted humiliating web pages or videos, or created embarrassing images on social media platforms. Others have taken unauthorized (未授权的) photos or videos in a bedroom, bathroom, or another location considered private, and posted them online for the world to view, rate, share, and discuss.

There are many reasons to monitor your son or daughter’s online behavior and pay close attention to the warning signs. Among the most worrisome, students who experienced bullying or cyberbullying are significantly more likely to attempt to take their own life.

“If your child suddenly has no interest in their electronic devices, appears jumpy or nervous while using their phone, or appears angry, frustrated, or depressed after going online or gaming, then they may be experiencing cyberbullying,” says Sameer Hinduja, Ph. D., co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and professor of Criminology at Florida Atlantic University. Also, if your child avoids conversations about what they’re doing online, becomes unusually secretive when it comes to their phone or electronic devices, or makes excuses to stay home from school, they may be the target of online bullying.

    1. What is the purpose of citing列举 the numbers in the second paragraph?

    A. To show the emphasis from the society.

    B. To display how cyberbullying works on children.

    C. To show the severeness of cyberbullying on children.

    D. To show how researchers conduct their survey.

    33. Which of the following doesn’t belong to cyberbullying?

    A. Name-calling teens on the Internet.

    B. Spreading false rumors of teens online.

    C. Posting pictures online for the world to view.

    D. Posting humiliating web pages or videos of teens.

    34. What can we conclude from Sameer Hinduja’s words?

    A. Students will lose interest in their electronic after surfing online.

    B. Students will get angry easily after they surf on the Internet.

    C. Parents must closely monitor their teenagers’ online behavior.

    D. There are signs whether teenagers are experiencing cyberbullying.

    35. Who is the article most probably targeting at?

    A. Parents.  B. Teenagers.  C. Teachers.   D. Experts.

I was relieved to see the girls safe and sit in their car seats. but June’s expression was one of pure anxiety.

As I looked back from the driver’s seat, I found a young man in rags playing his guitar. His skinny, poor-looking dog rested next to his feet near an old, worn cardboard sign that read, “Homeless, please help.” We’d come across homeless people before and had talked about their needs and struggles. I should seize the chance to set a good example for my daughters to give a helping hand. So I searched for some cash, only to find I had nothing but credit cards. So I told June I didn’t have any cash. To my surprise, June opened her little pink purse and offered to give him a five-dollar bill, I responded with a sigh of relief, “Oh good. I’ll pay you back when we get home.” “No, Mom. I don’t want you to pay me back. I want to help him and give him my money.” she replied.

As we drove down the crowded rows of the parking lot, I told her that we would get to him. When we got there, I called out. “Excuse me. sir!” He cautiously walked toward our car and answered, “Yes ma’am?” June stretched out her entire body to hand him her five-dollar bill through the window and explained, “I want you to have this.” He smiled and hesitatingly asked, “This was your money?” “Yes! I want you to have it,” she proudly answered. “Thank you,” he said, touched by her thoughtfulness.

We exchanged a smile, and as we drove away, my younger daughter Scarlett began to cry. I noticed that she had emptied her purse with two quarters in her tiny hands and insisted on giving all her money to the young man.

    One possible version:

Recently, a heated debate has taken place in our class concerning the topic “Should we travel alone or with companions?” and opinions fall mainly into two groups.

43% students who are in favour of travelling on their own think that it is more convenient and free for them to travel without time limits. Furthermore, they can arrange their schedules according to their desires, taking the opportunity to promote their courage and sense of independence.

On the contrary, 57% students would prefer to travel with companions, claiming that they can rid themselves of loneliness and share happiness as well. More importantly, they are able to turn to companions for help when emergencies arise.

As far as I’m concerned, I am for travelling with companions.

    One possible version:

I had no choice but to turn around. Seeing our car again, and feeling very confused, the gentleman returned to us. I told him that my other daughter also wanted to give him her money. He peered into the window to see my pig-tailed four-year-old grinning from ear to ear. “I want to help you!” she said proudly. Now with tears in his eyes, he said in disbelief, “You? You want to help me?” “Yes! Yes!” she replied in a childish voice, nodding happily. Then June proudly handed him her little sister’s two quarters.

The gentleman tightly held the coins in his dirt-stained hand. He held his hands to his chest and expressed his sincere gratitude. We all smiled at each other one last time, with tears running down his face and mine. I watched June put her hand on her heart, close her eyes, and tell her little sister, “It feels so good to help someone, doesn’t it, Sister baby?” Scarlett agreed. With big smiles, they sank back into their seats.
