You are walking alone down the street. Suddenly, you hear footsteps(脚步声). Is someone following you? How do you know the footsteps are someone else’s and not your own?
You can tell because your brain(大脑)has the ability to ignore(忽略)certain sounds, according to a study from New York University in the US. Because of this, we often ignore our own footsteps. But we may easily hear others' footsteps.
Scientists tested this on mice. They found that when mice became familiar(熟悉)with the sound of their own footsteps, they developed a "sensory filter(感觉过滤器)", according to David Schneider, one of the lead authors of the study. This allowed the mice to ignore the sounds of their own footsteps. They could more easily notice the sounds of their environment.
"For mice, this is really important." Schneider told Science Daily. "They need to listen for a cat getting close to them, even when they're walking and making noise."
Our brains don't just ignore our footsteps. We also ignore some other sounds that we make ourselves, including the sound of eating, breathing heavily and typing on a keyboard. Being able to ignore these unimportant noises lets us pay attention to more important and dangerous ones. For example, we are quick to notice the sound of a baby crying. So we can rush to make sure they are okay and keep them alive. The same idea applies to humans screaming. When we hear this sound, we can quickly go to help the screaming person.
( )54. What help(s) mice ignore the sounds of their own footsteps?
A. The environment. B. Their sensory filters.
C. Cats' footsteps. D. Scientists.
( )55. What do human brains normally ignore?
A. Others' footsteps. B. Self-made sounds. C. A baby crying. D. Screaming.
( )56. Being able to ignore some sounds helps humans .
A. give attention to more important things B. stay calm
C. stay healthy and strong D. do dangerous things
( )57. What can we learn from the article?
A. Human brains don't have the ability to ignore footsteps.
B. Mice can't ignore the sounds of their own footsteps.
C. Ignoring certain sounds helps mice survive.
D. Water flowing and baby laughing are boring noises.

Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad’s car. She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there’s a deer there!” Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (角) on each side of its head.
As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer’s head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer’s head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged closer. “I knew I was in trouble,” Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for self-protection, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.
When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman’s terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. “I was kicking it to get its attention,” she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the woman.
Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloths to Sue’s injured leg. “We’re going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer’s head and neck, but the blows didn’t scare it away. “I was losing faith,” she says. “A couple more strikes, Alexis,” said her father. “You can do it.” Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer’s neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the nearest hospital.
After Sue was treated, she tearfully thanked her rescuers. “You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help,” she says, “not to beat up a deer.”

Imagine having an ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie. But it could happen in the near future.
Canadian biophysicist Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.
Scientists have been trying to grow organs(器官) in labs to replace our old ones. But it is a hard job. For example, liver cells(干细胞) can grow in a lab, but the cells still need things like blood vessels(血管) to actually work. These things have to grow inside a scaffold(支架).
In the past, scientists have used man-made materials, animal parts and even dead people as scaffolds. But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.
Pelling and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy-to-use scaffold.
They first cut an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple’s cells and make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple, and watched it grow.
“You can implant these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive,” Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.
The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly took over the pieces of the apple.
Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use.
He says that the shape of flower petals could be perfect for repairing skin. And asparagus(芦笋) could fix a broken spine(脊柱).
Now, Pelling and his team are trying hard to put these crazy ideas into reality.
( ) 62. Pelling’s idea of man-made ear seems crazy because he used _______as scaffolds.
A. animal parts B. dead people C. man-made materials D. ordinary apples
( ) 63. The underlined word “ implant” in Paragraph 7 probably means _______.

( ) 64.Which is the right order of making an ear out of an apple according to the passage?a. put the apple scaffold inside a mouse b. add human cells to the apple scaffold
c. cut an apple into the shape of an ear d. make the apple ear a scaffold
e. take out the apple’s cells in a special way
A. a-b-c-d-e B. b-c-d-a-e C. c-e-d-b-a D. c-d-a-e-b
( ) 65. From the last three paragraphs, we can infer that Pelling will experiment with other
fruit, plants or vegetables_______.
A. to make human ears B. to repair burnt skin
C. to fix a broken spine D. to make human body parts

七、阅读与回答问题(本题共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
When the evening lights are lit, a big performance opens at Xian's theme park Tang Paradise. Dressed as people from the Tang Dynasty with traditional clothes and high hair buns(发髻),around 20 musicians play the traditional drum, sheng, flute, yunluo and other instruments.
They are members of the Dongcang Drum Music Society playing Chang’an ancient music, or guyue, which started in the Tang Dynasty. At first, guyue only included wind instruments and percussion instruments. Later, string instruments such as zheng and pipa were also added. In 2009, it was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
“Guyue is our own symphony from ancient China,”said Mr. Qi, who is a musician of the Dongcang Drum Music Society." It has been played for over 1,000 years, and now we are inheriting it as well as innovating(创新)it.
“We also add modern stage performance elements such as plots, sound and light to make guyue more enjoyable for audiences,”Mr. Qi explained. "We play traditional songs as well as adapted ancient tunes(曲子)like Melody of White Feathers Garment.”
“For the music itself, we divided our group into different parts such as the bass and treble(低声部和高声部)so the tunes become more complex and expressive,” he added.
Another thing the Dongcang Drum Music Society is doing is to spread guyue to more young people. “We sometimes play songs from TV series and video games, showing that guyue can be fun, too. In this way, more young people will be attracted by it,” Mr. Qi said.
“Many kids’ parents have reached out to us, saying they want their children to learn guyue, which is a very cheerful sign to me——our ancient music is really coming back,” Mr. Oi said.
