My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, "Who broke this window?" Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.
"Oh," I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It. was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn't even get an allowance(零花钱). "My father is going to have a temper," I thought. I didn't want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I pulled it skyward. I told the truth, "I did it." It was hard enough to say what I had done.
My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher, who would strike a student with it, but I feared she was going to start with me.
"I know how you like birds," she said as she stood looking down at my guilt-ridden(深感歉疚的)face. "Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It's time that we got a new one for the school anyway. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed; I am rewarding you for your truthfulness."
I couldn't believe it! I wasn't being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide—the very one that I had been saving up money to buy.
All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day, and it will echo(回响)forever.

Have you heard of the term "tweenager"? It's a slang(俚语)word used in the UK to describe children between about ten and twelve years old. They are between being a junior and a teenager, you see. Why do the press and media refer to kids in this way?
Well, more and more companies now create products and services for tweenagers. They seem to tell us that tweenagers must have more money, freedom and influence upon their parents than they've ever had before.
Most children in the UK today get more pocket money than kids did a decade ago. Despite problems happening fairly often and regularly in the economy, parents generally have more money to give than before, since they are having fewer children on average than in the past. In addition, a higher divorce(离婚)rate in the UK makes parents try to compensate(补偿)by buying presents for their children. It's a bad habit for both parents and children to get into. but parents are under constant pressure from commercial marketing and the requests of their children.
You may wonder how tweenagers have more freedom than previous generations. Well, UK children today are very media-and computer-literate. They have access to much more information about life and the world. They may have experienced a lot in life as well. With such sophistication(老于世故)at such a young age, it's no wonder tweenagers are able to influence their parents.
Now UK tweenagers are also very fashion-conscious and concerned about their images. In a world of television programs that promise immediate success and fame at a young age, some people think it's extremely important to look fashionable.
So what does tweenage fashion look like? It's lots of brightly colored materials, particularly pink, and usually plain, not patterned. There are plenty of bows, necklaces and bracelets, too.
But can it really be healthy for us to encourage kids to be like adults at a young age? Are we stealing childhoods in return for a bit of profit? Well, the UK government is certainly concerned, and for that reason has strict laws preventing companies from clearly and openly marketing their products and services at children.
28. What is the use of the first paragraph?
A. To explain a concept and bring up the topic.
B. To tell the difference between a junior and a teenager.
C. To show why people in the UK prefer to use the slang.
D. To state how the slang came into being and make a summary.
29. How does the author like the idea that parents buy presents for their children?
A. He doesn't give a certain answer. B. He doesn't agree with it.
C. He doubts about it. D. He supports it.
30. Why can tweenagers affect their parents more than those before?
A. They have learned more about life and the world.
B. They can receive more advanced school education.
C. Their parents have less time to take good care of them,
D. Their parents are under constant pressure from their work.
31. Why do tweenagers tend to look fashionable?
A. They are afraid of being laughed at by others.
B. They have less freedom than previous generations.
C. They wish to become successful and famous quickly.
D. The media often encourage kids to be like adults at a young age.
D
Many kids help out around the house with chores(家庭杂务)such as emptying a dishwasher, putting dry clothes away, and taking out trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances or other rewards such as extra computer time.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless they get something in return. "Running any kind of household is a team effort," Susie said. "A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that they all have responsibilities in the house, and that a family decides together how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look."
Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards encourages kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real-world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑取)either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in(提交)for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. "Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards," says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster, "Kids need positive reinforcement(强化)to help encourage them to do so."
What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return? Write a 200-word response. Send it to tfkasks4you@time forkids.com. Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade and contact information of your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.
32. What does the underlined word "they" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The educators. B. The kids. C. The parents. D. The family.
33. What is Chris Bergman's point of view?
A. Kids should be rewarded for doing chores,
B. Parents decide what kids can do for the family.

34. How can kids get digital points through the ChoreMonster app?

C. By making a trip to the mall. D. By applying for real-life rewards.
35. What information should be included in a kid's 200-word article?

A mother is a person who, seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, immediately announces she never did care for pie.
—Tenneva Jordan
I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, as the oldest and my mom's "grown-up" girl, I had to keep myself cool. I was in middle school after all. But when I got every chance and I was alone. I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag(标签)and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered(撒)presents, she would sigh and warn us, "There won't be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed." Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In the past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking up a lot of space of the living room. I had heard the phrase, "Giving is better than receiving", but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason why I couldn't get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. Some of us made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed, we lost our self-control.
"Here's another one for you," said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, puzzled. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I recognized this one. But it was not mine. It was my mom's. A new tag had been put on it, with my name written in my mother's handwriting.
"Mom, I can't…”

参考答案、解析及评分细则
听力部分录音稿
(Text 1)
W: Are you ready to order now, sir?
M: Yes. I'll have tomato soup, beef, potatoes, and peas.
(Text 2)
W: Are you happy now that the exam is over?
M: Happy? You've got to see my grade before you say that.
(Text 3)
M: Sorry. I had to walk to work this morning.
W: How long does it take you?
M: About three quarters of an hour.
(Text 4)
W: What are you going to do tonight? How about going to the movies? There's one that starts at 7:00 p. m.
M: Good. I'm going to play tennis this afternoon but I'll be home by 4:00 p. m. Then we can go out for a big dinner before seeing the movie.
(Text 5)
M: Why are you looking me up and down?
W: What a strange suit you're wearing! Your jacket doesn't match your trousers.
M: I know. I got dressed in the dark, and I didn't realize my mistake until I got to the office.
(Text 6)
M: Hello, Julie. Have you been to the new sports center yet?
W: Not yet, Peter. Is it good?
M: Yes, it's great. You can do a lot of sports. I played table tennis last Thursday and watched the basketball match there, too.
W: What about swimming?
M: There is a very good swimming pool there, too. Do you want to go with me next week?
W: Sure. Any day except Wednesday.
M: Well, why don't we go on Friday? Then we can stay late.
W: OK. Let's meet after school.
(Text 7)
W: Hello!
M: Hello, Lucy. This is Tom. Look, could you give me a favor? I've tried to phone my wife six times and I can't get through. The line is busy all the time. Could you possibly go next door and give her a message?
W: Sure! What do you want to tell Susan?
M: Could you just say I've run into an old friend and I'm staying with him. I'm not at the hotel and I'll give her a ring later.
W: Sure, I'll go right now.
M: Thanks a lot, Lucy.
W: OK. Bye!
(Text 8)
W: Hi, Mr. Saive. May I ask you a question?
M: Of course. What can I do for you?
W: I was wondering about our magazines. I know we have to order them in advance, but I don't know when the deadline is, how much they cost, or when to pick them up.
M: I can give you all that information. You can pre-order your magazine, or you can just buy one when they come out. The pre-order deadline is in a week, and you just have to drop off your order form and check here. The magazine is $ 50. They'll be out in 2 months, and you can pick yours up right here.
W: So, I still have some time to decide whether or not to pre-order, right?
M: Absolutely. But if you know you definitely want a magazine, I would recommend pre ordering. That way, everything will be ready ahead of time.
(Text 9)
M: Hi, Lisa, what are you doing?
W: Watching a Japanese film. I'm going to spend all next year in Japan, and I think I should find out more about its culture.
M: You mean you have been accepted into the program?
W: I sure have.
M: That's wonderful. You must be excited.
W: Excited and nervous. You know I have to work on some basic conversation skills.
M: How much Japanese can you understand?
W: Only a little now. But I'm going to take a special language class next month.
M: I wish I were as clever as you are at foreign languages. I would love to study abroad.
W: Then why don't you? The school has a lot of programs that don't require the knowledge of a foreign language. You just have to be the kind of person who is quick to learn new things and can get used to a new environment fast.
M: I thought all programs required one to know a foreign language. Thank you for letting me know this.
(Text 10)
W: There is a new reason to be extra careful over the holidays, and the police are warning drivers about a new law that was passed last month. Using a cell phone while driving is now illegal, and with it will come heavy fines. We can all remember last year, when a man suffered a severe head injury when a green Toyota struck him. And just three months ago, a schoolteacher walking home from work was hit, breaking both of her legs. Most recently, a dog was killed at the crossing of 5th and Broadway from careless driving. All incidents involved cell phones, and all have made people pay attention to this troublesome trend. You will be ticketed right away if you are caught using cell phones while driving. So, how will the police accomplish this? Well, unlike a traditional road block, officers will be standing at crossings, monitoring drivers as they come to a stop. Previously, the police asked other people to call in and report other drivers, but it's not clear how effective that was. So, be careful out there. One possible version:
"This is your present and it belongs to you," said my mother. I was stopped by my mother's eager, joyful look. "Let's see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it." It was a blow dryer(吹风机). Though this might seem nothing but a simple gift, to me it was so much more. Being an eleven-year-old girl, I was extremely surprised. In my world, where receiving largely outweighed giving, my mom's selfless behavior was impossible to understand. It was a huge act. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to give up her Christmas gift so that I could have one more present.
That Christmas is quite meaningful to me. I have always remembered that Christmas fondly. It had such an impact on me. As an adult with children in my life, I can now understand my mom's actions. I see, actually, she was not "giving up her Christmas present" as I had thought, but was finding an even greater joy in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. My mom's simple act meant the world to me. Whenever I look back on my mom's giving, I will choose to give in my life.
