Taihu Tunnel(隧道), 10.79 kilometres long and 43.6 metres wide, has been the longest underwater tunnel in China. It stands out as one of the “2022 China’s Top 100 Buildings in the New Era”.
When building Taihu Tunnel, the project team faced many challenges, such as high safety risks and time limit. To deal with them, they made workable plans. They divided the tunnel construction(建造) into 19 parts. The construction of each part mainly took four steps.
Step 1 Remove. The team built a cofferdam to remove water from the area, so the workers could go inside and do their work in dry conditions.
Step 2 Clear. The team dug deep into the lake bed, and cleared the soil and stones out in order to make space for the next step.
Step 3 Build. The team built the floor, walls and roof of the tunnel in this step. They used high-quality building materials to waterproof the tunnel.
Step 4 Backfill. The team put the soil and stones back. Then this part of the tunnel was buried deep down the lake bed.
The construction of the 19 parts was streamlined. The project team used a new method. The work group of each step moved to the next part and repeated their work after they finished the work in the previous part. Different work groups cooperated well with each other. From part to part, the construction started from the opposite ends, and got connected somewhere in the middle. The construction took about four years to complete, shorter than people had expected.
The drivers’ safety is fully considered in Taihu Tunnel. There are 200,000 LED lights on the ceiling of the tunnel. They show vivid pictures of blue sky, starry night and so on. The pictures can help drivers fight tiredness and travel through the tunnel safely. Besides, there are two systems (系统) in the tunnel. The police can check the traffic situation through a monitoring system. If traffic accidents happen, the police can give instructions and warn drivers in the tunnel over an audio system to prevent further accidents.

①You may not know it, but there are vampires in your house right now. Luckily, they do not drink the blood of living people. One day, Helen shouts, “Roger, come and look at the egg! It’s cracking(裂开).” Slowly a long beak appears. They are unsure what it is.

So now Dacty is living in the Botanical Gardens. Roger and Helen visit him every day.

17-Year-Old Is Youngest to Fly Around the World
On August 24, 17-year-old Mack Rutherford landed (降落) his microlight airplane safely back in Bulgaria, completing a five-month effort to fly around the world. He has now set the record as the youngest person to fly around the world alone.
Mack’s flight began in Bulgaria, where he took off on March 23. He was 16 at the time, but celebrated his birthday during his trip around the world.
He flew in a small, two-seater microlight airplane, able to fly at speeds of about 186 mph (300 kph). One of the plane’s seats was replaced with an extra gas tank, which allowed Mack to cover longer distances. The plane also had satellite communications that let Mack stay in touch with people on the ground.
Mack’s route took him over Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. He visited 30 countries in all, covered 33,630 miles.
Though Mack expected his trip to take two to three months, he had to change his ideas. In some places, he had to wait long for getting permission (批准) to fly. Other problems required major changes to his flight plan.
Mack also faced lots of other challenges, many of them related to extreme weather. In Sudan, Mack had to deal with sandstorms. He had to fly through heavy rain in India, and ended up with water in his gas tanks.
He said crossing the Pacific Ocean was the most difficult part of the trip. After a 10-hour flight from Japan, he had to land—just as it was getting dark—on an island with no one else on it. He spent the night in the open air.
In spite of all the difficult times, Mack described the trip as “amazing”.
Now Mack has set the record for the youngest person to fly around the world alone, beating 18-year-old English pilot, Travis Ludlow, who set the record last year.
Mack says he hopes his trip will show young people they can make a difference. “You don’t need to be 18 to do something special. Just follow your dreams and they will eventually come true,” he said.
