We will be going to the Hands On Children’s Museum in Olympia where the kids will be able to see exhibits on art and science. The date for the field trip is next Tuesday, 18th July. So we will leave the school at 10:00 am and arrive at the museum around 10:30, and head back to the school around 12:30 pm. We will get a free bus ride, which is awesome because it will save us a lot of money. The cost per child is still not confirmed because we are waiting for the museum to apply a discount, but it should not be more than 8 dollars. The museum requires one volunteer parent for every 5 children, so we will need at least ten of them. Also as a reminder that children need to pack their own lunch. If you wish to attend the field trip and volunteer, please let us know via email, by adding your name to the list linked below as soon as possible.

In a classroom in rural Kenya’s Rift Valley, a student takes notes alongside her fellow classmates. She wears the same school uniform-a grey skirt and a green sweater. However, she is more than 80 years older than them. Priscilla Sitienei, who turned 99-years-old on February 11, said she went back to class to set a good example for her great-grandchildren and to start a new career. “I’d like to become a doctor because I used to be a midwife (助产士)” she said, adding that her children were supportive-of her decision.
Back in 2003, the government of the East African country began an education campaign to help to pay for the cost of primary schooling, allowing some older members of society who had missed out on education in their younger days to continue their dreams. This has given Sitienei more than an education. She’s also become a film star. She traveled to Paris last year for the first showing of a film about her journey titled “Gogo”, which means “grandmother” in her native Kalenjin language. She’ll also be heading to New York City soon for the launch of the film there.
Sitienei, who is in her sixth year of primary school, said her aims were far more practical than becoming a movie star. She had the idea when her great-granddaughter dropped out of school after getting pregnant, “I jokingly asked her if she had any money remaining on her school fee and she said yes, so I told her that I’d use it to attend school.” She said she had hoped that her great granddaughter would continue with her studies. But when she refused, Sitienei decided to go to school herself.
Sitienci also enjoys other school activities, including physical education classes. “It keeps me fit. I get to jump around, even though not as much as they can do, but I at least move my body. That’s my joy,” she said.
Her teachers use Sitienei’s wide experience to keep the peace during lessons. “I appoint Sitienei to help control the class. And it works. When I go outside, the class remains silent, “said Leonida Talaam, her class teacher.
24. How does Priscilla Sitienei differ from her classmates?
A. The learning approach. B. The dressing style.
C. Study efficienoy. D. Physical age.
25. Why are Paris and New York City mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show the daily routines of a film star.
B. To state Sitienei is really fond of traveling.
C. To indicate effects of the education campaign on Sitienei.
D. To explain the hard work it takes to make dreams come true.
26. Which word best describes Sitienei?
A. Active. B. Passive. C. Independent. D. Intelligent.
27. What can be inferred about Sitienei from the last paragraph?
A. She hates noise in class very much. B. She is a good helper to her class teacher.
C. She always enjoys staying in silence alone. D. She often replaces her teacher to give lessons.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. A 27. B

The Mattel toy company created a new Barbie doll with the famous British scientist Jane Goodall as its model. The company issued the new doll this week, the latest member of the Barbie toymaker’s “Inspiring Women”. Mattel said the doll, made from used plastic, honored Goodall’s deep research on chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in Tanzania and her efforts to protect the wild animals.
The doll was dressed in a light brown shirt and shorts, much like that seen in many images of Goodall at work in Africa. It also came with a notebook, telescopes and another doll modeled on the real chimp Goodall named David Greybeard. He was the first chimpanzee with which she built trust in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park. The relationship permitted her to study the animals extremely closely. “I wanted a doll to be me even before this idea came up,” the 88- year-old scientist said. She praised Mattel for developing new Barbies standing for a wider number of working women.
Lisa McKnight agreed. She is the Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls for Mattel. She said, “We hope that this collection inspires kids to learn more about green careers and how they can protect the planet, and act out stories about environmental protection through doll play.”
Goodall started her research in what is now Tanzania in the 1960s. She produced much research on wild chimpanzees over the years. She recorded how they made and used tools, lived in communities, and showed a high level of emotional understanding.
Goodall wanted to teach children that if they wanted to have a good effect on the changing environment, they must act. Goodall said, “Hope is about action on climate change, loss of wildlife, unfriendly lifestyles and pollution. We reach out to others because there are people working on each one of these problems…”
28. What do we know about the doll modeled on Goodall?
A. It was created by Goodall.
B. It looked like a chimpanzee.
C. It was in honour of Goodall.
D. It was named David Greybeard.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The habits of chimpanzees.
B. Goodall’s career experiences.
C. The importance of studying wild animals.
D. The bad living conditions of chimpanzees.
30. What did Goodall call on children to do in the last paragraph?
A. Keep healthy.
B. Raise questions.
C. Adapt to the environment.
D. Protect the natural environment.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Jane Goodall Gets Her Own Doll
B. A New Doll Is About to Go on Sale

Nobel prize-winners, well-known authors, and famous scientists — you might think all these people were born to be creative. However, that’s not always the case.
While well-known figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein did their most significant work in their youth, famous American poet Robert Frost and English-born natural scientist Charles Darwin were known as “late bloomers”— people whose talents were not noticeable until later in life.
This idea of “peaking” at different times inspired new research from the United States. “Many people believe that creativity is exclusively (独有地) associated with youth, but it really depends on what kind of creativity you’re talking about,” said Bruce Weinburg, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the study.
According to the study, published earlier this month in the journal De Economist, there are two types of people: conceptual (概念的) and experimental thinkers.
To reach this conclusion, researchers took the 31 previous winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and arranged them according to when they did their most significant work, to identify their creative peaks.
Some peaked from ages 25-29. Classified as conceptual thinkers, these people think outside of the box, coming up with new ideas before they become used to the conventional way of doing things.
The second creative peak came with economists in their 50s. These are experimental, thinkers who have been in their fields for a long time. This allows them to learn from errors and experiment with different processes, before eventually finding new solutions.
“Whether you hit your creative peak early or late in your career depends on whether you have a conceptual or experimental approach,” said Weinburg. He added that their study isn’t limited to economics, saying it can apply to other creative subjects. So if you’re struggling to come up with new ideas, don’t panic. Your creative peak may be yet to arrive.
32. Why is famous American poet Robert Frost mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To indicate that some people showed their gifts in their late years.
B. To indicate that some people showed their talents in their early years.
C. To indicate that some people made great achievements with others’ help.
D. To indicate that some people did their most significant work through efforts.
33. How did the researchers draw the conclusion: there are two types of creative people?
A. By referring to some data.
B. By doing some experiments.
C. By interviewing some creative people.
D. By adopting the means of logic reasoning.
34. What can we learn about conceptual thinkers?
A. They have been in their fields for a very long time.
B. They prefer to use the conventional way of doing things.
C. They are often young and think outside of the box.
D. They learn from errors and experiment with different processes.
35. What does Weinberg probably agree with?
A. It’s difficult to find one’s talent in later years.
B. People’s great creativity can come at any time.
C. Most people take a conceptual approach when thinking.
D. Conceptual thinkers could be more successful in the art field.
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B
【解析】这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要讲述了科学家一项新的研究,人们可以被分为概念型思考者和试验型思考者,而这两种人会在不同的时期达到顶峰。
32. 推理判断题。根据第二段“While well-known figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein did their most significant work in their youth, famous American poet Robert Frost and English-born natural scientist Charles Darwin were known as “late bloomers”—people whose talents were not noticeable until later in life.(毕加索和爱因斯坦等著名人物在年轻时就完成了他们最重要的工作,而美国著名诗人罗伯特·弗罗斯特和英国出生的自然科学家查尔斯·达尔文则被称为“大器晚成者”——他们的才华直到晚年才被发现)”可推知,美国著名诗人罗伯特·弗罗斯特在第二段中被提到是为了表明有些人在晚年展示了他们的天赋。故选A项。
33. 推理判断题。根据第五段“To reach this conclusion, researchers took the 31 previous winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and arranged them according to when they did their most significant work, to identify their creative peaks.(为了得出这一结论,研究人员选取了31位前诺贝尔经济学奖得主,并根据他们最重要工作的时间对他们进行了排列,以确定他们的创造力高峰)”可推知,研究人员是采用逻辑推理的方法得出这个结论的:有两种有创造力的人。故选D项。
34. 细节理解题。根据第六段“Some peaked from ages 25-29. Classified as conceptual thinkers, these people think outside of the box, coming up with new ideas before they become used to the conventional way of doing things.(有些人在25-29岁达到顶峰。这些人被归类为概念性思考者,他们会跳出思维定式,在习惯传统的做事方式之前就会想出新点子)”可知,我们能从概念性思考者身上得知他们通常很年轻,能跳出固有的思维模式。故选C项。
35. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“He added that their study isn’t limited to economics, saying it can apply to other creative subjects. So if you’re struggling to come up with new ideas, don’t panic. Your creative peak may be yet to arrive.(他补充说,他们的研究不仅限于经济学,还可以应用于其他创造性学科。所以,如果你正在努力想出新点子,不要惊慌。你的创造力巅峰可能还未到来)”可知,温伯格可能同意的是人的伟大创造力随时都可能产生。故选B项。

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on 14 March, 1879. 36 Einstein was so smart that at age 16 he wrote his first paper. However, Einstein did badly at school. 37 He ended up at college in Switzerland. His grades meant it was difficult to get a job after college, but a friend found him work finally.
Albert had a great year in 1905, publishing (发表) four scientific papers! 38 One of the things he researched was that energy and mass (质量) are different forms of the same thing. This was explained by his famous equation E=mc². In 1909 Albert was finally made a professor at the University of Zurich. 第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An abandoned dog stopped at the front door of the Laceys’ small house, wagging its tail, trembling with shyness and cold. Doris Lacey, whose school had been called off because of the snow, spotted the creature and immediately went up to meet it.
“Where did that come from?” Mrs. Lacey asked as soon as Doris put the dog down in the kitchen. Mr. Lacey was at the table, cleaning his fingernails. “I don’t know where it came from, ”he said mildly, “but I know for sure where it’s going.”
Doris hugged the dog hard against her. She said nothing.
Because of the snow, the roads would be too bad for travel for many days. Mr. Lacey couldn’t get out to take the dog to the animal shelter in the city right away. He agreed to let it sleep in the basement while Mrs. Lacey unwillingly let Doris feed it leftover food.
Four days passed and the dog did not complain. It never cried in the night or barked at the wind. It didn’t tear up everything in the basement. It wouldn’t even follow Doris up the basement steps unless it was invited. It was a good dog.
Several times Doris had opened the door in the kitchen that led to the basement and the puppy had been there, all stretched out, on the top step. Doris knew it had wanted some company and that it had lain against the door, listening to the talk in the kitchen, smelling the food, being a part of things. It always wagged its tail, eyes all sleepy, when she found it there.
Even after a week had gone by, Doris didn’t name the dog. She knew her parents wouldn’t let her keep it, that her father made so little money and any pets were out of the question, and that the dog would definitely go to the shelter when the weather cleared. Still, she tried talking to them about the dog at dinner one night. “She’s a good dog and not much trouble, right?” Doris said, hoping one of them would agree with her. But Mr. Lacey shook his head, “You know we can’t afford a dog, Doris. You try to act more grown-up about this.” Doris fell silent, praying the weather would never clear.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
However, the sun was shining the next morning. Doris was sitting alone in the living room trying not to cry, but she was not strong enough. Her face was wet and red, her eyes full of depression. Outside, she heard the trunk of the car slam shut, one of the doors open and close, the old engine cough and choke and finally start up. Hearing the car travel down the road, she could do nothing but cry herself to sleep, and her dreams were full of searching and searching for things lost.
Later that afternoon, Mr. Lacey came back with the same dog. Doris put her hand to her mouth. She couldn’t believe her eyes. “You didn’t take her away?” she asked. “I did,” her father answered. “The worst looking place I’ve ever seen. Ten dogs in a cage. Smell was enough to knock you down. And they give an animal six days to live. Then they kill it with some kind of a shot. I wouldn’t leave an ant in that place, so I brought the dog back.” Doris excitedly ran to her father and gave him a super big hug. What an unexpected surprise it is!
