At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the Y. M. C. A. offering exactly the opportunity. Mother continually warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the Y. M. C. A. pool was safe.
I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, "Hi, Skinny! How'd you like to be ducked?" With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits-when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly.
When I came to consciousness, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.
I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by. It deprived me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return.
This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, "Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?"
I had conquered my fear of water.
    24. The author's original fear of water was caused by__________.
    A. his poor skill in swimming
    B. his mother's warning of drowning
    C. an outing to the beach with his father
    D. an unpleasant memory of the pool
    25. Why was the author not scared to death when he was thrown into the water?

    B. He felt that the Y. M. C. A. pool was safe.
    C. He was waiting for others to save him.
    D. He came up with an idea to go upwards.

    A. he was still a poor swimmer
    B. he had not overcome the fear yet
    C. he was not afraid of drowning any more
    D. he was not satisfied with the swimming training
    27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

Recently, I had the unexpected pleasure of witnessing a basketball game played by local villagers in Guizhou province. Despite being amateurs, the teams played with professional-level format and refereeing (裁判), creating an intense atmosphere. The rescheduled final game of the Guizhou country basketball league, known as the “Village Basketball Association (VBA),” took place in Taipan Village.
The game attracted a large audience, even on a weekday. The live stream of the game on social media platforms received 5.66 million views, generating buzz with hashtags like “what does ‘sold-out’ look like.” So, why are grassroots competitions like this more attractive to people like me than professional games? I believe it’s because sports arise from the grassroots level, allowing everyone to connect socially and find common ground.
The VBA reminded me of a basketball game I experienced during my visit to Yangshuo in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. Bored of the scenic landscapes, I took a break and joined the locals and other visitors on the sidelines. Sitting on the bare ground, I felt so authentic and free that it released all my thoughts and emotions.
Similarly, in the VBA game, the winning team received modest prizes like live ducks and cooked meat, showcasing the genuine and down-to-earth nature of the competition. I even wondered if the players were cooks or farmers who could prepare the food right off the court.
The sudden popularity of the VBA can originate from the pervasive influence of social media and people’s desire to explore something different from their immediate surroundings. However, what truly resonates (共鸣) and has the potential for further growth is the pursuit (追求) of spiritual fulfillment. Grassroots sports offer an accessible and fulfilling experience, making them an ideal destination for individuals seeking a deeper connection.
    28. What made the basketball game in Guizhou attractive?
    A. The professional-level players.
    B. The large number of viewers.
    C. The involvement of local villagers.
    D. The VBA offers better prizes.
    29. How did the author feel while watching the basketball game in Yangshuo?
    A. A connection with other audience.
    B. A sense of authenticity and freedom.
    C. A sense of loneliness from the locals.
    D. A sense of boredom from the landscape.
    30. According to the last paragraph, which has NOT contributed to the popularity of the VBA?
    A. The impact of social media.
    B. The attempt to achieve a spiritual satisfaction.
    C. The eagerness for the newness in their surroundings.
    D. The perfect opportunity to realize one’s sportsmanship.
    31. What’s the best title of the passage?
    A. VBA—an Online Hit
    B. My Special Encounter with a VBA Game
    C. The Game for Prosperity and Happiness
    D. VBA—a Path to Grassroots’ Success
    D
Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.
    32. What makes purple tomatoes really special?
    A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor.
    C. Their proper size. D. Their pleasant color.
    33. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice?
    A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed.
    34. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
    A. The environment affects GMO foods.
    B. The customers do not like GMO foods.
    C. GMO products are used to help farmers.
    D. Scientists think GMO products are safe.
    35. What’s mainly talked about in the text?
    A. Different DNA can benefit plant growth.
    B. Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.
    C. Scientists are changing DNA of crops.
    D. Human health depends on changed DNA.

Jumping rope is popular but we tend to ignore (忽视) its benefits. 36 A study found that college men who spent 10 minutes jumping rope daily for six weeks improved their cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness just as much as college men who spent thirty minutes jogging for the same time. Here are some benefits of jumping rope.
    37
Since most of your major muscles are working when you jump rope, the exercise creates a lot of heat in the body. Your body needs to burn more fuel to produce this energy, so it burns lots of calories. It burns more calories than any other exercises, such as jogging, cycling and swimming.
    Improves coordination (协调)
Jumping rope requires good coordination, especially as you advance to more skilled moves.
38 It improves coordination by requiring several body parts to communicate in order to complete one movement. The feet must jump in time with the wrists turning in order to create a continuous jumping motion.
    Reduces injury risk
With your improved coordination from jumping rope, you’ll be less likely to get hurt either during exercise or in daily activities. 39 As a result, you are more agile (灵活的) and your body awareness is improved greatly. This guarantees fewer injuries.
    Improves heart health
Since jumping rope gets your heart pumping, it’s great for your cardiovascular system and heart health. Jumping rope can increase your VO2 Max (最大摄氧量), the measure of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can breathe during exercise. The higher someone’s VO2 max, the more cardiovascular endurance (耐受力) they have.
Jumping rope gives us a full-body workout with just one piece of equipment and one move. ____40____ Jump to some music or take your rope to a nearby park to enjoy the fun.
    A. Burns calories
    B. Improves muscles
    C. It benefits us not only physically but also mentally.
    D. You can quickly swing the rope twice within each jump.
    E. It may even be more effective than other forms of exercise.
    F. Jumping rope forces you to move your upper and lower body together.
    G. So jumping rope helps you stay calm, clear and focused in everything you do.

My father and I disagreed about my curfew (晚间在家的时间). He would say I had to be in by 9:30 on weekdays, and 11:00 on weekends, and there was no exception. One day, I took courage to first show my opinion on my curfew. I told him it made me feel like a junior high school kid. He explained that though a curfew might sound like a limit, it was really about people looking out for one another.
The very next Friday after that exchange, my dad and I had tickets to see our own town's professional football game. On that day he was driving his car to a nearby city to meet some major clients(客户) and told me that his getting home and our leaving for the game would be tight.
To make sure we could move off the moment he came back, I got everything prepared. When half an hour had passed from the time when he said he would be home, I understood that he was a little late. But then, nearly a whole hour passed. I was getting upset. We were going to miss the kick-off! And why hadn’t he phoned me and let me know he was going to be really late? As I anxiously stepped the floor, another half hour passed. That was when I got really angry. How inconsiderate my father was! We were going to miss the whole game! However, when another half an hour passed, my anger turned to fear. What if something terrible had happened to my dad, like he had a sudden heart attack or was caught in an accident, or something else? I began to get really worried, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. I had already called his cell phone about ten times, but there was no answer.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
