My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either overwatered or underwatered, but after my diagnosis (诊断) with brain cancer, I loved the idea of having something green around.
A friend gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green bowl. We placed the plant in the living room and I told Hannah I wanted to care for it myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or lose leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment when I sometimes felt useless. As a family physician, I was used to offering care, not receiving it.
Since my diagnosis, I had to rely on help from other people. Watering the plant, small act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity.
After I recovered from the operation and returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height. Both the tree and I were thriving Then, without any reason, it began to show signs of stress. Its leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. Hannah reminded me that we’d seen houseplants die before, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the plant had become a symbol of my health. I grew increasingly depressed and fearful.
Looking back, I realized I had wrongly connected my caring of the plant—something I could manage—with my own survival—something I couldn’t. Knowing I couldn’t control my fate (命运), my anxiety actually lessened. I began to search online to figure out how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving it room to grow. When it was back in the sunny window, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the plant in its new pot, I make a point to think of those who have cared for and supported me.
24.Why was the author surprised about the plant’s good condition?
A.Because of his recent diagnosis. B.Because of his worsening health.
C.Because of his previous failures. D.Because of his unusual good luck.
25.What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 imply?
A.The author considered himself useless. B.The author felt connected to the plant.
C.The author desired to provide care. D.The author hoped to return to work.
26.Why was the author fearful?
A.Because the plant’s poor health might indicate his death.
B.Because the stress of work would harm his well-being.
C.Because he may have to rely on others from then on.
D.Because he would experience a rather risky operation.
27.How did the author lessen his anxiety?
A.By searching plant knowledge online. B.By thinking of those who supported him.
C.By knowing he will survive in the end. D.By accepting his unavoidable limitation.

Amy, a day old, was abandoned at a police station in Seoul. Her birth parents couldn’t afford to give Amy the appropriate healthcare then. She spent her first three months in an orphanage before she was adopted. “I always thought, why should I be more thankful to my adoptive parents than the next person?” she says.
In 2011, Amy reconnected with her birth mother in South Korea, her adoptive mum by her side. “My Korean mother took my American mother’s hands in hers and said with tears, ‘Thank you.’ After that, my whole world changed,” Amy says. At the time, she was working in the e-commerce sector and struggling with anxiety, depression and an eating disorder. Reconnecting with her birth family, however made her feel like the luckiest person in the world and she wanted to actively share her good fortune. That year, she quit her job and co-founded the Global Gratitude Alliance, which partners with grassroots organizations to create community-led solutions or social and economic change.
Since then, a reflexive sense of thankfulness has become Amy’s frame of reference for work, relationships and daily life in general. She tried to rethink her world view, appreciate the little things and make connections with others. For Amy, the attitude shift helped her overcome health issues—she didn’t need the drugs any more after she returned from Korea.
Those positive effects inspired Amy to share the experience with others. Through a partnership with a home for orphaned children in Nepal, the Global Gratitude Alliance provided teachers with workshops that concluded with a ceremony of giving thanks. The participants used those techniques to help their students and community after the destructive earthquake of 2015. Children from the school recently visited a local seniors’ home to build relationships with the residents there. “Gratitude creates a cycle of giving and receiving,” Amy says.

As the West dries out and heats up, wildfires get bigger and more destructive, officials tasked with preventing and battling the fires could soon have a new thing to add to their set of tools. The high tech help could come from an area not normally associated with fighting wild fires: artificial intelligence(AI).
Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, based in Jefferson County, has decades of experience of managing satellites, exploring space and providing information for the US military. By generating more timely information about on-the ground conditions and running computer programs to process huge amounts of data,Lockheed Martin representatives say they can map the extent(范围)of a fire in minutes rather than the hours it can take now They say the AI that the company has applied to military use can improve predictions about a fires direction and speed.
“The situation that wildland firefighters work in is a dynamic environment with multiple activities and responsibilities,”said Dan Lordan, senior manager at Lockheed Martin’s Artificial Intelligence Center. Lockheed Martin aims to use its technology to reduce the time it takes to gather information and make decisions about wildfires. The quicker they can react, the faster they can control the fire and protect people’s properties and lives.
Lockheed is working with a software company to build a digital model of a wildfire based on an area’s topography(地形)condition of the plants wind and weather to help forecast where and how it will burn. After the 2020 Cameron Peak fire Colorado’s largest wildfire the company used the information about the fire, examined the more timely satellite data on fire conditions, and generated a model that was similar to the actual fire’s movement.
“Applying AI to fighting wildfires isn’t about taking people out of the field.” Lockheed Martin spokesman said.“Somebody will always be there, but people currently in the field are surrounded by so much data that they can’t sort through it fast enough. That’s where AI can help.”
32.What do we know about Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company?
A.It has good experience in fighting fires.
B.It works on the follow-up to firefighting.
C.It applied AI to its service for the first time
D.It has played positive roles in various fields.

A.AI is helping people fight wildfires
B.AI can fight wildfires automatically
C.AI is used to fight Colorado’s wildfires

Jayce began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands while he had one. Due to his young age, Jayce was encouraged that he was just like an angel with one wing folded to prepare for something.
It started when one boy laughed at him. From that day, little Jayce became sad. He returned home with questions. “Why am I different? Why me? Why?” He cried and asked his mother Lewis. Seeing Jayce was mad, the poor mother felt it a huge dagger (匕首) to her heart. What made her more sorrowful was that she didn’t know what to do at that point and how to give answers to her son’s questions which she could never find out herself. The white lie burst just like bubbles that day.
A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV and saw a news story where she was shocked to find out the answer. It was Trashaun, an eighth grader, who had a similar disability but led a brilliant life, that displayed positive energy from head to toe. The 14-year-old sunny boy performed his slam dunks(灌篮) on the TV, who had been a hit on the Internet. However, like Jayce, he had missed most of his left arm since his childhood! Lewis called her son Jayce in. The poor little boy got spellbound, watching dunks after dunks.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce. He saw Trashaun as a tough role model and Lewis felt quite happy. But little did she know that a relative had already contacted Trashaun, inviting him to have a meeting with Jayce to help rebuild Jayce’s confidence.

It’s in the countryside, about ten kilometers away and very peaceful. Then there is the Bridge Hotel—it’s in town but not in the center. It is out on the airport road.
M: Hmm, that might be a bit far actually. OK, now the one you mentioned, in the city center. Can you tell me a bit about it?
W: Well, it is quite unusual—it used to be a large private house. It was bought by the Venice chain and they completely redecorated it. That’s a five star hotel.
M: Does it have a swimming pool?
W: No. The Royal Oak has an outdoor pool, which is lovely in summer, but the only hotel with an indoor pool is the Bridge Hotel.
M: I see. Well, I think I’ll probably go for the city center.

M: Tatyana is a Russian, and now lives in Canada. She and her husband, who is a businessman, and their two sons moved to Canada in 1998. She was appointed to a position in a science laboratory. And now Tatyana is an assistant professor at the University of Alberta. At first, her greatest problem was her poor English. Not being able to understand or express herself fully made it difficult for her to take her children to register at school, and she couldn’t give them the support they needed with their homework. All that soon changed, however. She learned to speak English in a quite unusual way, by joining Toastmasters International and paying close attention to the speeches that people made. She found it a very enjoyable experience. Tatyana has always felt welcome in Canada, and that’s what makes it a special place for her. Tatyana says that she still loves Russia, but she loves Canada, too, in a different way. She feels great affection and respect for Canadians. Whenever she has a problem, there is always someone willing to help her.

根据文章第一段“My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either overwatered or underwatered, but after my diagnosis (诊断) with brain cancer, I loved the idea of having something green around. (我妻子汉娜和我通常不养室内植物。花盆里的任何东西要么浇水过多,要么浇水不足,但在我被诊断出患有脑癌之后,我喜欢周围有一些绿色的东西。)”可知,作者和妻子每次养室内植物都会失败;再根据第二段“When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or lose leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. (当它没有立即变黄或落叶时,我感到惊喜。)”可知,作者看到竹子没有变黄和落叶时,感到惊喜是因为他和妻子之前养室内植物都失败了。故选C。
25.词句猜测题。根据文章第二段“As a family physician, I was used to offering care, not receiving it. (作为一名家庭医生,我习惯于提供照顾,而不是接受照顾。)”可知,作者一直以来都习惯于提供照顾。而根据划线句子前一句“Since my diagnosis, I had to rely on help from other people. (自从我被确诊后,我不得不依靠别人的帮助。)”可知,确诊之后,作者不得不依靠别人的帮助,也就是不能继续给别人提供照顾了。因此,划线句子的隐含意思指的是,给植物浇水又唤起了作者照顾别人的渴望。故选C。
26.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Hannah reminded me that we’d seen houseplants die before, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the plant had become a symbol of my health. I grew increasingly depressed and fearful. (汉娜提醒我,我们以前见过室内植物死去,但我无法摆脱这种感觉,那棵植物已经成为我健康的象征。我变得越来越沮丧和恐惧。)”和最后一段“Looking back, I realized I had wrongly connected my caring of the plant—something I could manage—with my own survival—something I couldn’t. Knowing I couldn’t control my fate (命运), my anxiety actually lessened. (回想起来,我意识到我错误地把我对植物的照顾——这是我能做到的——和我自己的生存联系起来——这是我不能做到的。)”可知,作者感到恐惧的原因是因为作者把植物的健康和自己的健康联系在一起,所以看到植物开始枯萎,作者就联想到自身的健康,因此感到害怕。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Looking back, I realized I had wrongly connected my caring of the plant—something I could manage—with my own survival—something I couldn’t. Knowing I couldn’t control my fate (命运), my anxiety actually lessened. (回想起来,我意识到我错误地把我对植物的照顾——这是我能做到的——和我自己的生存联系起来——这是我不能做到的。知道自己无法控制自己的命运后,我的焦虑反而减轻了。)”可知,作者接受了自己不可避免的局限性,知道自己无法控制自己命运后,他的焦虑也就减轻了。故选D。

She tried to rethink her world view, appreciate the little things and make connections with others. For Amy, the attitude shift helped her overcome health issues —— she didn’t need the drugs any more after she returned from Korea.(从那时起,一种反射性的感激之情就成了艾米在工作、人际关系和日常生活中的参考框架。
根据第四段的句子“Through a partnership with a home for orphaned children in Nepal, the Global Gratitude Alliance provided teachers with workshops that concluded with a ceremony of giving thanks. 35.主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章第一段为主旨段,提到人们正在使用人工智能帮助扑灭野火的情况,而文章接下来的段落都是围绕着人工智能被用于扑灭野火这一情况来进行具体阐述的,故选项“AI is helping people fight wildfires(人工智能正在帮助人们扑灭野火)”适合作为本文标题;故选A项。

61.考查主谓一致。句意:有大量短一些的小道供你选择。There be句型中be动词的单复数由后面的名词决定,因此根据a great number of shorter paths可知,谓语动词应该用复数。故填are。

There are some apples in the bowl.
There is a ruler, two pens and five books in the school bag.
本句中的There be句型中be动词应与a great number of shorter paths保持一致,因此谓语动词应该用复数。故填are。

续写:Paragraph 1:
The day was not spent drowning in self-pity but for fun. The boys met at a middle school on a sunny afternoon. Seeing his role model in the flesh, Jayce was too thrilled to say a single word but stand there with his mouth open wide. Amused by the sight, Trashaun held Jayce’s tiny hand. And then Trashaun took Jayce to ride bikes around the school and taught Jayce slam dunks. Jayce was so happy that they played for a long time until they were exhausted. During the rest, Trashaun took out a shirt that said “Five fingers can also make it”, which was prepared for Jayce.
Paragraph 2:
Staring at the shirt he sent Jayce, Trashaun began to talk about their left arms. He told Jayce that the shirt was valuable to him, because it was the shirt he wore when he dunked to win the first match. He realized that he could play as well as the other players although he only had one arm. Trashaun said, “We are disabled, but we are not unable. The missing arm is like an invisible challenge, reminding us that we should make more efforts if we want to achieve anything.” Jayce looked up to him, his eyes sparkling with hope and determination.
