It seems that self-help books are topping best-seller lists more often these days. More people are turning to self-help books for advice on how to live their lives. Last year, sales of these books in the UK rose 20 percent, reaching a record high of 3 million, The Guardian reported.
Many of the self-help books are written by famous people or psychologists (心理学家). They teach you how to deal with problems in your life – for example, how to get along with your classmates or coworkers, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness in daily life.
But can these books really help us with our lives? People have lots of different opinions about this.
Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After reading more than 300 of them, she set up her own self-help website. Her site helps women succeed in the business world. “They can give you the courage (勇气) and motivation (动力) to do whatever you want to do,” she told the Independent.
However, recent research by the University of Montreal in Canada might not agree with that. Researchers surveyed two groups of people - one of the groups had read many self-help books, while the other hadn’t. They found that people in the first group were more stressed out and depressed (沮丧的).
There is no single “quick fix” that can improve our lives. However, it’s always good to know that help is at hand when we need it.
36.Which of the following can not be found in self-help books?
A. How to get along with people around you.
B. How to make full use of your time.
C. How to make progress in your study.
D. How to live happily every day.
37.What does the research by the University of Montreal in Canada show?
A. Self-help books give people courage and motivation.
B. People who read many self-help books are more depressed.
C. People who have motivation don’t read self-help books.
D. Self-help books don’t have any influence on people.
38.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph4 refer to?
A.Julie Hall’s website
B.Self-help books
C.Julie Hall’s friends
D.Successful business women
39.What can be inferred from this passage?
A. People in the UK have the most serious psychological problems in the world
B. Only famous people or psychologists can write best-seller self-help books
C. These days more people need advice on how to live their lives
D. We can find a “quick fix” in self-help books to deal with all the problems in our lives.
40.What is probably the title of the passage?
A. Reasons for self-help books being best-sellers
B. How can self-help books help people?
C. Self-help books can fix everything
D. Are self-help books helpful?
D
What genetics (基因) did your parents pass on to you? Was it their eye color or their height? It could be their characters or their musical talent. Or maybe it was their anxiety (焦虑) about math.
A US study found that genetics can decide children’s math skills and anxiety over math. It studied over 500 sets of twins and found that genetics has something to do with math anxiety. Over 10 years, the twins did math tests and filled out questions about their math anxiety. They found that fraternal twins (twins with different genetics) had different skills and anxiety over math. Identical twins (twins with the same gene set) were similar. This shows genes can influence (影响) people’s anxiety over math.
Math anxiety has a stronger influence on a child’s abilities. It could bring the same feeling as being hurt in the body.
This anxiety means that students will not want to practice math as much as they should. Then, they become even worse at math. It only adds to their anxiety about it.
But if you’re bad at math, don’t just look at your parents. Math anxiety is still rare – genetic reasons explained about 40 percent. The environment, including school and family, is also a reason. So in life, it’s important to know how to deal with math anxiety.
41.What does the study find out?
A. Your parents pass on their eye colour, height and their musical talent.
B. Your fear of math comes partly from your parents.
C. Why you are not good at math.
D. Your parents play an important role in your study.
42.Why did identical twins have similar math anxiety?
A. Because they had similar math skills.
B. Because they greatly influenced each other.
C. Because they did the same number of math exercises.
D. Because they shared the same gene set.
43.According to the article, we can learn that _____.
A. math anxiety can help students face problems
B. children with better abilities won’t be better at math
C. math anxiety makes students feel worse with math
D. genetics is the main reason for math anxiety
44.What does the underlined word “rare” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Common. B. Uncertain.
C. Unusual. D. Interesting.
45.What might the next paragraph of the passage talk about?

B. Ways of learning math well.
C. How to communicate with parents.
D. How to deal with math anxiety.
