Another person’s enthusiasm (热情) was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my 36 .
I was nine years old when she entered our home in rural Virginia. My father 37 me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is known for being the 38 boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.”
My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right in the 39 . Then she looked at my father and replied, “You are 40 . This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found an outlet(释放的途径)for his enthusiasm.” That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart. My family and neighbors had built me up in my 42 as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.
She changed many things. She advised my father to go to a dental(牙科)school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county seat, where my father’s career could be more 43 and my brother and I could be better 44 .
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a second-hand 45 and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I 46 her for her enthusiasm because I thought it had already improved our lives. I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers. One day I was doing the same kind of 47 when I went to interview Andrew Carnegie and received the task which became my life’s work later. And above all, I wasn’t the 48 beneficiary(受益者). My father became the richest man in our town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.
What power 49 has! When that power is there to support the certainty of one’s purpose and is 50 strengthened by faith(信念), it becomes an irresistible(不可抗拒的)force which poverty and temporary failure can never match.
You can communicate the power with anyone who needs it. This is surely the greatest work you can do with your enthusiasm.

The octopus (章鱼) is an amazing animal. Scientists have learned that octopuses are clever. But until now, they didn’t realize how smart octopuses really were.
Octopuses are very intelligent. They can learn new things just like humans. They’ve even learned a few tricks to get themselves out of difficult situations. If an octopus is in danger because of an attacker, such as a shark or a bird, it can use some pretty wonderful skills to get away. Octopuses don’t have teeth or sharp paws to protect themselves. Instead, they use more clever ways to fool their attackers. One way that can help an octopus hide is shooting ink. By the time the ink goes around and the attacker can see again, the octopus has swum away or hidden. Octopuses also have the ability to change the color of their bodies to match the color of the things around. Enemies swim right by octopuses without noticing them.
While diving into the ocean, scientists were surprised to see octopuses use another way to protect themselves. They saw some small octopuses moving coconut(椰子)halves across the ocean floor. The scientists followed the octopuses and discovered that the animals were putting the coconut shells together. When an octopus thought it was in danger, it ran back to the shells. Then it got two shell halves and hid inside them by pulling one on top of the other. Because coconut shells are very hard on the outside, octopuses were able to create a safe ball to protect themselves from danger. Scientists believe that this action shows that octopuses are tool users.
Crabs(螃蟹)also use shells for protection. But scientists don’t think that crabs are tool users. These animals can pick up shells and hide in them, but octopuses can carry shells to another place. Scientists say this shows that octopuses can think ahead about how they will use the shells later.
⑤Besides humans, monkeys and some birds are the most common tool users. But now scientists have put octopuses with the animals that are intelligent enough to use tools.
51. Moving coconut shells from one place to another shows that octopuses ________.
A. may find a new place to stay B. may get out of the trouble
C. are able to plan for future needs D. are able to learn from crabs
52. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
53. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show readers how clever octopuses are.
B. To compare octopuses with other tool users.
C. To describe how octopuses hide in a coconut shell.
D. To encourage readers to learn about octopuses’ tools.

To remember vocabularies drives a lot of students mad. Are there any useful methods to do it better? Here is a passage for you to read and learn.
Stay up late doing exercises, remembering every grammar rule and reading all English articles you’ve learned again and again... Are these the ways you learn English? The good news is that there are better ways to build your English vocabulary.
▲ Learn a new English word every day
If you’re not sure where to start, try making cards of the most commonly used words. Another way to build up your English vocabulary is reading. If you like reading, look for English newspapers or magazines about your favorite subjects. Read a few articles each morning, and circle new words. If you like watching movies, pick one and start watching. If you’re afraid you won’t understand everything, you can always watch them with subtitles. Once you’re confident in your English listening skills, try watching movies without subtitles.
▲ Don’t forget to record new words in a vocabulary notebook
Whenever you come across a new word, write it down. Keep the notebook and a pen at hand. Then, you’ll have something to review while traveling or taking a break.
·▲ Vocabulary learning system
Another thing to do is to develop an organized but easy way of collecting and learning new words. For example, a card system should include the following information,
________Word
________English meaning of the word
________Phrases or sentences
________Related words
________Words of similar meanings and words of opposite meanings
________Chinese meaning on the back of the card
▲
It is found that people understand and remember facts better if they are given in logical(合逻辑的) groups. For example, it is less difficult to remember words that are related to each other than those unrelated ones. Creating lists of words related to common themes – such as friendship, family, wealth, careers, sciences – will be much easier to learn and remember than collecting words according to their first letters.
54. In Paragraph 2, the writer introduces the topic by _________.
A. describing students’ common ways of learning English
B. listing the problems that students have when learning
C. presenting a few questions that students want to ask
D. telling a funny story of language learning experience
55. The underlined word “subtitles” means _________.
A. names of books, magazines, or other published works
B. second titles which are often longer and explain more
C. translations of foreign films shown at the bottom of the screen
D. names that describe people’s social positions or jobs
56. Which of the following sentence is the most suitable one to be put in the ▲ ?
A. Understand and remember facts better
B. Collect words by theme or subject
C. Remember a list of unrelated words
D. Divide words according to their first letters
57. In which order is the passage written?
A. Time order. B. From general to specific.
C. From specific to general. D. Space order.
C
In 2018, Science Magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time remembering facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads?
Civilizations (文明) develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines help us to get most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter?
Researchers have realized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases (偏见), and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective (客观的), but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem relates to the ease (容易) of getting information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief — the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along.
In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence (智慧), we can easily get to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our health depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we slowly but unquestionably become strangers to future people.
58. Smart machines are likely to increase our biases because ________.
A. they go off course in testing and scoring B. we control the training process on them
C. we offer them too much information D. they overuse the provided answers
59. The ease of getting information from the Internet ________.
A. stops us from making efforts to learn new skills
B. prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed
C. misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge
D. separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines
60. The underlined word “collapse” in Paragraph 5 probably means “________”.
A. a sudden failure B. the basic rule
C. an unhappy start D. the slow development
61. The writer’s main purpose in writing this passage is to ________.
A. question about the standards of information storage
B. discuss our problems of communication with machines
C. stress the importance of improving our remembering ability
D. remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember
D
Mike licked the last of the chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and left for the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet (游泳比赛).
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and fast. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations, son,” his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was all wet through. With a sweet smile and a wave, he took his towel and left to change.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike enjoyed his favorite ice cream flavor before they left home. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he’d win again. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted him on the back. He’s taken first place again in his race.
As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm (吉祥物). His parents didn’t think it was a great idea, but Mike argued that he needed to eat it to win.
After several mouths of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s figure.
It didn’t take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place — and then third — and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it’s got too much fat and sugar in it, and it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it’s time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.”
Mike went to the swim meet sadly, and didn’t perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike was not sure what to expect. He’d been training hard with his dad, and staying away from the rich desserts he enjoyed so much. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool.
As he jumped into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could. He made the turn at the end of the lane (泳道) perfectly, and was feeling strong. This race was a long one, so Mike tried to keep his energy level up even as he began feel tired.
Whenever he came up for a breath, he could see he was gaining on the bot ahead of him in the next lane. Feeling determined to pass him, Mike found the power in his muscles to push ahead, and as his hand touched the edge of the pool, the race was over. He lifted his swim goggles (护目镜) off his head and looked at the times on the electronic board. He knew he wasn’t last, but what was his time?
His jaw dropped as he realized he had beaten his own best time, and everyone else’s too. Mike had won his race. The audience and his teammates cheered loudly, and his parents were grinning from ear to ear. “Hey champ, let’s go grab some of your favorite ice cream and celebrate!” said his father.
“Thanks, Dad, but I’ll pass on the ice cream; it’s not such a lucky charm after all!”
62. What happened to Mike when he kept eating ice cream?
A. He became undefeated and gained confidence.
B. He won first place in every race he took part in.
C. He practiced swimming less frequently than before.
D. He gained weight, lost strength and failed his races.
63. The real reason behind Mike’s winning was that ________.
A. he took his lucky charm along with him all the time
B. he was strong-minded and had a talent for swimming
C. he swam well and trained hard to get into good shape
D. he received encouragement from his parents all the way
64. Which of the following can best describe Mike?
A. caring and cheerful B. friendly and open-minded
C. stubborn and selfish D. determined and hard-working
65. The passage is meat to tell us ________.
A. well begun is half done B. luck is one half of success

Hanfu has been popular in recent years. A growing number of young people in China are starting to wear the traditional Han Chinese clothing. And the trend (风尚) is not just popular among Chinese people. Some foreigners living in China have also fallen in love with Hanfu. Among them is a young Brazilian man named Rian.
Rian lives in Xi’an. Two years ago, he came to the beautiful city and became an English teacher at a kindergarten. After seeing many people wearing Hanfu in his city, Rian developed a strong interest in it. He soon began making short videos of himself trying on Hanfu.
“I want to share Chinese culture with the world.” the Brazilian said when he was asked why he made those short videos. He hopes to teach people about this beautiful culture in his own way.
“Today I’m dressed in Song style,” said Rian in a short video, after putting on the clothes skillfully. In the video, he also introduced the very fine and beautiful design of the clothes.
But Rian loves the Tang-style Hanfu the most. “My first taste of Hanfu was the Tang style,” said the young man. Although the traditional outfit(全套服装) is difficult to put on, he feels comfortable while wearing it. Every time he puts it on, he feels as if he has traveled back to ancient times.
Hanfu has helped Rian to learn more about China. In the past, the only thing he knew about the country was that it had a long history and a profound(深厚的)culture. But now Hanfu has shown him more details about Chinese culture. Rian plans to stay in Xi’an for at least another five years. He’ll continue to make short videos about Hanfu. He is going to post these videos up on Western social media platforms in hopes of teaching more people about the rich culture of China.
