I was 17 when I discovered shooting stars.

I loved them so much that I invited my high school friends to my family farm and spent an August night in our sleeping bags on the hillside to watch them together.

I can’t help but think of that as the final night of my childhood. I always managed to squeeze in a week or two of vacation before starting back at school, and I’d see shooting stars and remember that brilliant night on the hill. While still marveling at them, I’d work at convincing myself that the joy I’d experience from my accomplishments in college would soon replace my longing for some quiet time beneath a vast sky. But always, I returned to college life in August with deep sadness in my heart.

I’ve given lots of reasons over the past 13 years for my choice to live an independent life on a distant farm and homeschool my daughters. But deep down, I think the shooting stars had a lot to do with it. I couldn’t bear to gaze up at them and think that they were a finale(演出的终场)to be witnessed before returning to the demands of school and careers.

So I said “no” to all of it: no jobs, no school. And I decided to lead a life tied to the seasons, where shooting stars were just one of many gifts from nature.

I changed my life to make room for them and I’m starting to learn the difference between fulfillment and accomplishment.

Accomplishment is a child’s successful test scores. Fulfillment is loving and forgiving each other through times table(乘法表)and written words.

Accomplishment is the publication of 20 essays per year and six books. Fulfillment is the hours spent researching, then walking through the woods to think about each word and thought.

Accomplishment is making enough income to cover my taxes. Fulfillment is sitting outside at 3 am in August, watching the shooting stars, no longer sad at the passage of childhood, but thrilled for the joy of the stars.

It is learned that accomplishment is merely a mark in the book made as a result of following fulfillment above all else.

    24. What does the author think marks the end of her childhood?

    A. Leaving home for college.     B. Encountering shooting stars.

    C. Watching shooting stars with friends. D. Sleeping in a sleeping bag on a farm.

    25. What caused the author to live independently and homeschool her daughters?

    A. The need to live on a farm.     B. The wish for a life connected to nature.

    C. The desire for independence.           D. The demands of school and careers.

    26. Which of the following might the author see as fulfillment?

    A. Winning a gold medal in a sports competition.

    B. Spending quality time with family members.

    C. Holding a high position in a famous company.

    D. Buying a big, lovely and comfortable house.

    27. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. School or Careers           B. Watch Shooting Stars

    C. Live a Life of Fulfillment      D. Accomplishment or Fulfillment

    C

When you see someone take that first sip of freshly made milk tea, their face looks like pure joy. Today, millions of people enjoy this experience. Across the world, customers flock to their favorite spots to meet with friends and savor sips of these tasty drinks.

In the early 2000s, though, milk tea was just coming on the scene. The few brands that had successfully established themselves in the industry were dearly concerned: Would milk tea just be another fashion food? Sure, people are enjoying it today, but would they still be in a year, or five years? And with so much new excitement for this product, would people be able to distinguish milk tea companies?

These are the questions that Serenitea, a Manila-based milk-tea company, faced in 2014. While successfully opening 60 stores, they found themselves in a strategic fog, which led them to research into the deep, unexplored psychology of milk tea.

Like Airbnb, Serenitea partnered with an agency, CIA Bootleg Manila (CBM), that specializes in drilling down to the deep consumer “why”. The agency conducted a series of intensive, psychological-based techniques in its market research. Specifically, they probed the consumer’s deeper, emotional connections to milk tea, including their earliest childhood memories of milk and tea.

What they found was that milk tea was a complex topic. Their research revealed that milk tea produces three consistent psychological responses. People connected to milk through the concept of nurturing(滋养); they fondly remembered their childhood and being cared for by their mothers. Next, consumers connected tea to its healing properties. Respondents would recall receiving tea when they had stomachache or seeing their parents drinking herbal tea for health reasons. Lastly, they associated milk tea itself with teenage fun: a guilty pleasure of their youth.

They had uncovered the three psychological cornerstones(基石)of the milk tea experience: nurturing, healing, and teenage fun. This set of insights was crucial. By integrating them into the core of their brand strategy, they struck out an entirely new path.

    28. Which is closest in meaning to “probed ” in paragraph 4?

    B. Serenitea outperformed its opponents in research field.

    C. Serenitea suffered a temporary strategic failure in 2014.

    D. Serenitea partnered with a leading psychological agency.

    30. What can Serenitea do with the findings from their research?

    A. Offer as many new flavors as possible.

    B. Create a youthful and playful brand image.

    C. Redesign stores by adding romantic elements.

    D. Conduct intensive market research with CBM.

    31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. A New Path to Business Success   B. Three Cornerstones of Milk Tea

    C. Sharing the Pure Joy of Milk Tea   D. Revealing Milk Tea Psychology

    D

Big Tech companies are “training” generative AI(生成式人工智能)models by stealing music, books, photographs, paintings and videos off the Internet using copyright “fair use” as an excuse.

Last month, Getty Images took legal action against Stability AI — the maker of the popular image generator Stable Diffusion — for not only using 2 million of Getty’s photos, but also for changing or removing copyright management information from the images. It seems clearly unlawful, but that doesn’t mean the courts will agree. Big Tech has successfully skated through legal matters for years, waving the banner旗帜)of “permissionless innovation”.

Only the biggest of Big Tech players will dominate generative AI, because it requires massive amounts of computing power. But copyright appears to be anything but a top priority for Google and Microsoft. So while human creators rationally理智地explore and debate this issue, tech companies are using their work to train the generative machines that ultimately may make the artists irrelevant in the future.

The problem goes beyond artists losing incomes. AI operates on the theory that all the possible original ideas in the universe are already contained in the data sets from the Internet. So, the intelligence of AI merely requires reorganizing this data into something that differs enough from the original work to not risk a copyright problem.

Surely, the world has plenty of standardized artistic content already. What’s needed: ensuring a continuous flow of original ideas and fresh perspectives  to build a culture that goes beyond what is already found on the Internet and can be enriched by artists who might grow in ways no AI could predict.

We realize that Big Tech’s involvement in AI has raised concerns that may make the endangering of artists’ rights seem pale. Yet a nation’s cultural life is not a minor matter, and preserving artists’ rights is essential to ensuring their continued contribution. Existing copyright laws should ideally prevent abuses, but this is not always the case. Another solution may be needed: new laws governing AI and safeguarding the human core of artistic creativity.

    32. How do Big Techs justify their use of copyrighted material?

    A. By claiming “permissionless innovation”.

    B. By arguing AI operates on existing photos.

    C. By editing management information of the images.

    D. By avoiding legal consequences with permission.

    33. What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. AI should be banned by law.

    B. Artists should adopt less rational approaches.

    C. AI may harm sustainable artistic ecosystem.

    D. The courts are to blame for the copyright theft.

    34. Which statement will the author probably agree with?

    A. Artists will finally be replaced by AI.

    B. Artists’ low incomes are caused by AI.

    C. A nation’s cultural life will be harmed.

    D. Artistic creativity will be totally ruined.

    35. What is the purpose of the article?

    A. To blame Big Techs for stealing.   B. To focus on a copyright law case.

    C. To introduce generative AI technology.  D. To call for a copyright law reform.

    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Do you like cheeseburgers and French fries? How about dumplings or tacos?   36   That’s pretty much what you have to do these days when takeout food is delivered, since so many restaurants now close their bags with staples(订书钉).

37   We can rest confident that no one else has access to our meal before it arrives. But surely the use of tape(胶带), which many restaurants do choose instead, is much safer than staples. The latter are pulled into a bare and sharp position when a bag is opened, exposing lots of little teeth that find and surprise your wrist, hand or fingers. Ouch! Not to mention a wound from a staple is not only painful, but likely to get infected as well.

Furthermore, staples, being made of steel, are hardly environmentally friendly. And they pose yet another danger.   38   Believe me, you don’t want to eat a staple, especially not an open one.

What’s more, the open staple that we’re lucky enough to avoid when eagerly reaching into a bag of food poses a danger to anyone who handles the bag after we throw it away.   39

Why don’t we put an end to this practice and ensure that rice and bread remain our only “staple foods”, and not French fries?

      40

    A. But pain and misfortune awaits those who are not so fortunate.

    B. Let’s get rid of the fast-food monster and just use tape to close the deal.

    C. They can fall into food such as French fries and accidentally be consumed.

    D. Do you like any of them enough to reach into a shark’s mouth to get them out?

    E. The intention is good, because securely closing the bag helps ensure food safety.

    F. How many millions of the tiny staples are introduced each day into the food chain?

    G. And if we remove the staples before recycling a bag, it can also be time-consuming.
