B
Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! The scrawl (潦草的笔迹) in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes. Why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors.
Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait...” What my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. But I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that.
And it occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more precisely I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher—to restrain (限定, 限制) her red pen. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower—however faultily—like that.
I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”. It annoyed my teacher in high school endlessly. Eventually the “e” s and “a” s that were wrong placed in “beautiful” settled into their right places. I am glad I didn’t wait on them though. “Pretty” is easier to spell but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes.
And thanks to Mrs. White I had no concerns about writing what I meant, even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because life isn’t pretty. It’s beautiful.
24. What worried his mother when the author was in kindergarten?
A. The author’s unwillingness to go to school.
B. The teacher’s terrible attitude to the author.
C. The teacher’s ignorance of the author’s mistakes.
D. The author’s failure in exams and scrawl in homework.
25. What does the underlined word “dampen” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Reduce. B. Gain. C. Awaken. D. Inspire.
26. What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?
A. The author preferred using the word “pretty”.
B. The teacher in high school disliked the author.
C. The author finally succeeded in spelling “beautiful” correctly.
D. The author owed all his own spelling problems to Mrs. White.
27. Which of the following can be used to describe Mrs. White?
A. Generous and kind. B. Enthusiastic and careful.
C. Honest and brave. D. Far-sighted and tolerant.
C 25. A 26. C 27. D
根据第二段“The scrawl (潦草的笔迹) in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes.(字迹潦草的字迹让我母亲很担心,所以有一天,当她在一次家长会上遇到怀特老师时,她问她为什么从不纠正我的错误。)”
根据第三段“The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. (孩子们刚刚开始对使用单词和造句感到兴奋。)”可知,孩子们刚开始对遣词造句感到兴奋;结合画线词所在句中的“that enthusiasm with red ink.”可知,Mrs. White不想用红墨水来打击孩子们的积极性,即降低孩子们的热情。由此可推知,dampen应意为“减弱”,与A项意思相近。故选A。
根据第五段内容尤其是“Eventually the ‘e’ s and ‘a’ s that were wrong placed in ‘beautiful’ settled into their right places.(最终,在“beautiful”一词中放错位置的“e”和“a”找到了正确的位置。)”
通读全文尤其是第三段“I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink.(我不想用红墨水浇灭这种热情。)” 和“But I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that. (但我长大后学会了用充满爱和自信的语言。)”可推知,Mrs. White在教学方面很有远见,能容忍孩子们暂时的书写错误。故选D。

You’ve heard that plastic is polluting the oceans — between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (来源) of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that’s part of Von Wong’s artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped (倾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
32. What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for?
A. Beautifying the city he lives in. B. Introducing eco-friendly products.
C. Drawing public attention to plastic waste. D. Reducing garbage on the beach.
33. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3?
A. To show the difficulty of their recycling.
B. To explain why they are useful.
C. To voice his views on modern art.
D. To find a substitute for them.
34. What effect would “Truckload of Plastic” have on viewers?
A. Calming. B. Disturbing.
C. Refreshing. D. Challenging.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Artists’ Opinions on Plastic Safety
B. Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C. Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies
D. Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures
C 33. A 34. B 35. D
根据第一段“He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.(他用塑料垃圾建造巨大的雕塑,迫使观众重新审视他们与一次性塑料产品的关系)”可知,Von Wong用塑料垃圾制作雕塑,是想让人们重新审视与一次性塑料制品的关系,引起公众对塑料垃圾的关注。
根据第三段“Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (来源) of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. (全球只有9%的塑料垃圾被回收。塑料吸管绝不是最大的塑料污染源,但它们最近却受到了抨击,因为大多数人不需要吸管喝饮料,而且由于它们体积小、重量轻,无法回收利用)”可知,塑料吸管体积小、重量轻,无法回收利用。由此推知,作者在第三段讨论塑料吸管是为了展示它们回收的难度。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“In a piece form 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload’s worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic,” Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped (倾倒) from a truck all at once.(在2018年的一个作品中,Von Wong想要说明一个具体的统计数字:每60秒,就有一卡车塑料进入海洋。这项名为“一卡车塑料”的作品,Von Wong和一群志愿者收集了一万多块塑料,然后把它们绑在一起,让它们看起来像是同时从卡车上倾倒下来的)”可知,这个作品以创新的方式让人们了解到塑料垃圾以很快的速度和很大的量倾入海洋,刷新了观众对海洋塑料污染的认知。由此推知,这个作品会让观众对塑料垃圾进入海洋造成污染这件事感到不安。故选B项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.(但一根塑料吸管或一个塑料杯真的有什么区别吗?
Some paper plates can be recycled. ____36____ Rather than throw them away after one use, consider more eco-friendly choices.
____37____ First, they’re coated in plastic. This coating offers a smooth surface and prevents the paper plate from taking in liquids. Usually, the coating can’t be separated from the paper in a recycling facility, so these paper plates can’t be recycled like regular paper. Second, they’re polluted with food waste. Once they’ve been used, paper plates become covered in food waste. This adds pollutants to the recycling process. ____38____
If you’re trying to reduce your impact on the environment, then looking at ways to reuse any paper plates you do have is a good option. If you bought heavy-duty paper plates and they’re only a little dirty after use-if you served dry food on them, for example--you can clean them and use them again. ____39____
The most obvious alternative to paper plates is reusable plates. Even though you have to wash them with water, the environmental impact of a reusable plate will still be lower. If you’re looking for a semi-disposable (用数次的) plate, then you can find plates made from natural materials like bamboo. These plates can be used and washed or cleaned a few times. ____40____
A. The short answer is yes and no.
B. However, the vast majority usually can’t
C. At the end of their life, they will break down naturally
D. PLA is a bioplastic that’s used to coat some paper plates.
E. So most cities won’t accept used paper plates for recycling.
F. There are two main reasons why the majority of paper plates can’t be recycled
G. If you have clean paper plates, they can be used for a wide range of other projects.
B 37. F 38. E 39. G 40. C
根据上文“Some paper plates can be recycled.(一些纸盘可以回收利用。)”以及下文“Rather than throw them away after one use, consider more eco-friendly choices.(与其在使用一次后就把它们扔掉,不如考虑一下更环保的选择。)”可知,B选项“However, the vast majority usually can’t(然而,绝大多数人通常不能。)”
根据下文“First, they’re coated in plastic. (首先,它们被塑料包裹。)”“Second, they’re polluted with food waste(其次,它们被食物垃圾污染了。)”可知,本段主要是在介绍纸盘不能回收的主要原因,这与F项“There are two main reasons why the majority of paper plates can’t be recycled(大多数纸盘不能回收有两个主要原因。)”符合。故选F项。

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping (哭泣) sorrowfully (悲伤地) when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother.Having wandered (游荡) aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat.She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh (叹气) and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?” “Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man “Come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped (擦拭) her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless (无情的) compared to a stranger!” Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude (感激) to her?” Jenny sat there, speechless and numb (麻木的) with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered (变形) hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted (感激的). Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?” On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

She remembered her rudeness to her mother, and she just realized that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head to see the familiar face and the worried eyes. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” came the tired voice. Jenny couldn’t help but throw herself into her mother’s arms. “I’m sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed the sincere apology and the great gratitude. Then she felt the hug tightened.
