A painter has just completed his course. He took 3 days and painted beautiful scenery. He wanted to know people’s opinion about his talent and painting skills.
He put his creation at a busy street and just down below a board which read, “ I have painted this piece. Since I’m new to this profession, I might have made some mistakes. Please put a cross wherever you see a mistake. ”
While he came back in the evening to collect his painting he was completely shattered to see that whole canvass (画板) was filled with crosses, they criticized (批评) the painter seriously.
Completely heartbroken, he ran to his master’s and burst into tears.
This young artist complained, “I’m useless and if this is what I have learnt to paint I’m not worth becoming a painter. People have rejected me completely.”
Master smiled and suggested, “My son, I will prove that you are a great artist and have learnt perfect painting. Do as I say without questioning it. It will work.”
Young artist agreed and two days later early morning he presented a replica (复制品) of his earlier painting to his master. Master took that gently and smiled.

After driving down the main street of Granger, Washington, a traveler might think that it was either the site of the world’s greatest prehistoric (史前的) fossil (化石) discovery, or that the town was built in a dinosaur theme park. But no dinosaur fossils have ever been found in Washington State. Yet all kinds of dinosaurs are in the town.
“We just happen to like dinosaurs,” said the city official Alice Koerner. “And all kids happen to love dinosaurs. And when you’re traveling with your family, it’s usually the kids that decide where you go.”
Granger’s dinosaurs took years of work and tons of cement (水泥) to make them look real. It’s the kind of great effort that people think well of. The first Granger dinosaur went up in the early 1990s, according to Public Works Director Jack Burns. People liked it, so others followed, all designed and built by Jack and his partners. “That first one was prehistoric,” said Jack. “We used anything we could find around the Ginko Gem Shop, which has a colourful dinosaur standing outside to hold the cement.”
Many of the prehistoric big beasts are on the town's south side. Most are kid-friendly and suitable for climbing. Granger’s Dino-in-a-Day (usually the first Saturday in June) invites the public to take part in dinosaur making.
Driving into town shows you more dinosaurs. A large map at the entrance to the town promises to show where every Granger dinosaur is, but it is out of date. Jack said, “We have been building more dinosaurs and we try to let people know more about science and art.”

    28. When you are visiting Granger, Washington, _______.
    A. you will see many dinosaur fossils
    B. you can visit a dinosaur theme park
    C. you can buy dinosaur toys everywhere

    B. make Granger well-known all over the world
    C. attract more kids to travel there with their parents
    D. make people believe Granger was home to dinosaurs
    30. What do we learn about the first dinosaur built by Jack Burns?
    A. It was well received by people who saw it.
    B. It took Jack Burns several years to make it look real.
    C. It was the oldest dinosaur of all time.
    D. It was the model of many following dinosaurs.
    31. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph show?
    A. There are too many dinosaurs in Granger.
    B. The map now cannot show where every dinosaur is.
    C. More kinds of dinosaurs have been made in Granger.

In 2020, American National Youth Tobacco Survey found that more than 3.6 million youth had used e-cigarettes (电子烟). That means e-cigarette use has gone beyond traditional cigarette use in young people.
There are some reasons for that. Many young people are curious to try out some new flavors (味道) in e-cigarettes, like chocolate, lemon and strawberry. In fact, research has shown that the interesting flavors are what lead kids to experiment with e-cigarettes in the first place. Besides, when seeing some friends using them, the youth would probably have a try, too, believing that e-cigarettes are much cooler than traditional cigarettes. Last, they falsely believe e-cigarettes are harmless to their health since no smelly gases are produced in the process.
Many young users do not realize e-cigarettes have dangerously high levels of nicotine (尼古丁), sometimes as much as that of an entire pack of cigarettes, so that they are pretty harmful to their health and highly addictive. There has been a rise of stories in the media about kids who use e-cigarettes developing serious breathing problems. And nicotine may harm their developing brain, as brain development continues through about age 25. Also, nicotine can influence their ability to concentrate, learn and exercise.
Another huge risk is the fact that e-cigarettes blow up, thus causing serious injuries. According to a 2019 study from the U. S. Fire Department, e-cigarettes caused serious injuries to users including breaking their jaws (下巴) or knocking out their teeth. Meanwhile, another study found that injuries from e-cigarette use resulted in nearly 2,000 emergency room visits between 2018 and 2020.
In the U. S, it is now illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy e-cigarettes. What's more, the government now requires e-cigarettes to have a warning about the addictiveness of nicotine.

    32. What is the main reason why teenagers begin to smoke e-cigarettes?
    A. They want to copy what their friends have done.
    B. They think using e-cigarettes makes them look cooler.
    C. They believe e-cigarettes are much safer than cigarettes.
    D. They are curious about the inviting flavors of e-cigarettes.
    33. According to the passage, what may result in the concentration problem in young people?
    A. Nicotine in e-cigarettes. B. Slow brain development.
    C. Lack of physical exercise. D. Serious breathing problems.
    34. Why does the author mention the two studies in Paragraph 4?
    A. To present his opinion. B. To compare different results.
    C. To give detailed information. D. To explain research methods.
    35. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. E-cigarettes are rather harmful to young people.
    B. Many young people get addicted to e-cigarettes.
    C. People under 21 are forbidden to use e-cigarettes.
    D. Risk awareness of e-cigarette smoking should be raised.

How to read more and learn more

No matter what you are reading, it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends give you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.
Give up books that you don’t enjoy.
You may have chosen books that you are interested in, and they are right purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don't enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading, give it up. 39
    Set a reading goal.
It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don’t have a due date! I don’t need to return those books. 40 Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.

    W: Don’t worry. I’ll keep up.
M: We go in over there-Gate B. Peter and Tom are right behind the goal.
W: Oh, do we have to stand up all the time?

W: You can practice it again tonight before bed. You’ll do fine.
M: Last time I gave a speech, I thought I was prepared, but I ended up forgetting half of what I wanted to say. Tomorrow night, I’ll feel so thankful that it’s over.
W: Just take some deep breaths. Everyone in the class has to do it, right? So, everyone else is feeling nervous, too. You’re not the only one.
M: I know, but it definitely feels like I’m the only one.

As you know, my name’s Randall Davis, and I was born in Indiana, the United States. When I was 19 years old, I moved to Venezuela in South America, and later returned to the United States in 1993. I entered Brigham Young University from 1993 to 1999, and I majored in Spanish education. I also studied Japanese as a second language. After graduating from university, I moved to Tokyo, Japan, in the spring of 1999. Then, in 2006, I moved to Nagoya, Japan, where I currently live and teach. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, bike riding, playing basketball, and hearing from students from around the world.
