Every year, thousands of students choose to study in another country. More than 30 percent of these students go to the United States. Around 15 percent go to Italy, and 10 percent go to both England and Germany. A little less than 10 percent go to Australia, and around 5 percent go to Canada.
No matter where a student chooses to study, there are some things universities around the world need. First, all students must graduate from high school before they can apply (申请) to a university. Most universities also need some kind of test for students to enter the university. Universities in the United States, Australia, and Canada usually need some kind of standardized (标准化的) exam, such as the SAT in the United States. Students who do not come from English-speaking countries also must take a test such as the TOEFL in the United States and Canada to show they know enough English to study in English. England and Australia require students to take the IELTS.
In most countries, students must apply to each university they hope to go to. However, students applying to universities in England can use one form to apply to six universities at one time through the British Council (英国文化学会). For universities in other countries, students must fill in different forms for each university and pay a fee (费用) with each application.

The evening arrived; the boys took their places. The gruel disappeared in no time; the boys whispered to each other, and encouraged Oliver to ask for more. Oliver was very hungry and decided to take a risk. He rose from the table; and went to the master, plate and spoon in hand, said:
“Please, sir. I want some more.”
①
The master was a fat, healthy man, but his face became very pale. He looked at the small boy in great surprise for some seconds, and nearly fell but for the support to the table. The helpers were frozen with wonder; the boys with fear.
“What!” said the master at last, in a weak voice.
“Please, sir,” replied Oliver, “I want some more.”
The master hit Oliver’s head with the ladle (长勺) and screamed for Mr. Bumble.

“He did, sir,” replied Bumble.
“That boy will be hanged,” said the gentleman in white. “I know that boy will be hanged.”
Nobody was against the gentleman’s idea. A heated discussion took place. Oliver was locked in a cold dark room and no boys were allowed to talk to him. The next morning a notice was put up on the outside of the gate, offering a reward of five pounds to anybody who would employ (雇佣) Oliver Twist. In other words, five pounds and Oliver Twist were offered to any man or woman who wanted an apprentice (学徒) to any trade or business.

六、阅读填空 (本大题共 5小题,每小题 1 分,共 5分)
Many people do not know what to do in face of a decision, big or small. Most decisions aren't life﹣changers. But often, the decision isn't between this or that; it's between acting or not. If this challenges you, here are some tips.
Jog or ride a bike to nowhere. Just start moving in hopes of leaving the familiar. Walk down every street or path you can find until you lose your way. Then, see where you end up. Remember what it felt like to wonder where you were going. Try to lose yourself more often. It'll make you better at making a decision.
Sit outside without any technology for an hour. Let yourself get bored. Can you hear the birds singing? The wind blowing? Yourself breathing? Try to do this once a week, then every other day, then every day. One of the reasons we find it hard to make a better decision is that we keep getting attracted to new things. A break from the noise will lead you to the decision you need to make.
Do something that scares you. People who have trouble making a decision fear mistakes. Tell someone you love them. Laugh out loud in a public place. Give a speech to a stranger. And when you do this, remember how you feel. When you're sacred by a risky situation the next time, tell yourself that you didn't lie. And try to trust the process in the future.
Some of these things may seem silly, but the more you do them, the more you'll control yourself. It doesn't matter where you're going. Just go. Once you start moving, you can always change direction.
