该板块的活动主题是“了解一个具有多元文化特点的城市”（Learn about a city that has diverse cultures）。阅读文本是一则旅行日记。在日记中，中国学生Li Lan记录了自己的加州之行，并主要介绍了在旧金山一天的行程和所见所闻，从最初对旧金山的城市建筑产生兴趣到逐渐体会到多元文化对这个城市方方面面的影响。

Step 1 Pre-reading

1. 让学生完成活动1，看地图，了解美国及其周边的地理环境；接着聚焦旧金山，让学生谈谈对旧金山的了解。

    What do you know and want to know about San Francisco?

2. 向学生介绍文本背景，引导学生推测文章内容。

    A Chinese girl, Li Lan, has taken a trip there, and she wrote a travel journal. What do you think she might write about in her journal based on these pictures?

Step 2 While-reading

1. 让学生完成活动2，寻读文章，找出Li Lan去过或计划去的地点。
2. 让学生快速阅读文章，把握文章的发展脉络。
3. 引导学生学习分类整理细节信息的阅读策略，接着让学生细读文章，完成活动3，梳理作者的旅行经历。
4. 让学生完成活动4，细读文章，回答相关问题。

          What impressed the writer first about San Francisco?

          What is so special about the Mission District?

          Why did Chinese immigrants go to San Francisco?

          From Li Lan’s trip, what do you think is her expression of San Francisco? And find out  some examples in the journal.

          Did Li Lan enjoy her trip in San Francisco? Can you find some evidence to support your idea?

Step 3 Post-reading

1. 引导学生结合思维导图，复述Li Lan的游览经历。
2. 让学生完成活动5，结合自身经历讨论文化多样性的话题。

          Have you ever been to a place that has a diverse culture? What do you think brought about the cultural diversity?

          What are the benefits and challenges of cultural diversity?

3. 让学生完成活动6，用文章中所学单词将所示段落补充完整。

Step 4 Homework

          Read the text aloud.

          Write a short passage to describe a city that has diverse cultures. Remember to use words we have learnt today.
