第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共11小题;每小题2.5分,满分27.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.
Through the course of my school life, I’ve gradually developed a new understanding of the word “prioritization (优先次序)”. The first thing I wish to get in Senior One is the ability to manage my time better. I’ll surely become busier with the coming semester, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to my second goal.
My mother has always told me put my health first, so in the future, I hope to be both physically and mentally healthy. A person can’t study without the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first, no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.
And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world. We should all respect one another’s likes and dislikes, and focus on each other’s strengths, not our weaknesses. Everyone should try to make use of all of life’s opportunities.
Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In my case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance—the balance between studies and activities, efficiency and procrastination (拖延症), academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I set these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.
21.During Senior One, what does the writer want to do first?
A.Focus on improving her overall grades.
B.Join as many school clubs as possible.
C.Learn how to manage her time well.
D.Spend more time on outdoor activities.
22.What is the attitude of the writer towards failure?
A.Discouraged. B.Brave. C.Uninterested. D.Positive.
23.What is the writer’s purpose of the passage?
A.To explain how to balance studies and activities.
B.To stress the importance of health to students.
C.To show what she likes about high school life.
D.To share her goals for the coming school year.
B
Twenty years ago, the idea of sharing our lives so openly with the world was unheard of. However, for young people today it is considered completely normal to share pictures of their lives and interact (互动) online every day. Fans of social media point out that the world has never been so connected as it has allowed people to make friends, learn about the world and celebrate life.
However, many people have worries about the effects of this new way of living, particularly around the amount and type of information that is shared so openly. Recently researchers have found that too much time on social media may have some negative (消极的) effects. They measured people’s attitudes and feelings before and after watching social media sites. They found that the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they became.
There are a number of reasons for this. When watching social media, people often see photographs and stories showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. People seldom post negative stories or bad pictures, so it can be misleading (误导). For those looking at these pictures and comparing them to their own lives, they can end up feelings sad and depressed. They might think their lives are worse in comparison(对比). Even for those people who post positive stories and pictures, they too can feel stressed and worried. The number of “likes” and comments on their posts can make them anxious about their popularity. Of course, there is also the problem of “cyber bullying” where people become victims (受害者) of bullying online when others make negative or cruel comments about them.
The reality is that social media is a part of modern life and it is not going to go away. This research shows us that it is important to find a balance between our online and offline lives. We don’t have to disconnect from the Internet to live a happy life, but we should realise that the pictures we see and stories we read are only part of a bigger picture. If we can do that, we can protect ourselves and enjoy our lives.
24.What effect does social media have according to the recent research?
A.It increases unhappiness for people using it too much.
B.It enables people to make more friends on the Internet.
C.It helps people to have a better knowledge of the world.
D.It makes people have much more wonderful lives.
25.Why are people worried when they post positive stories?
A.They fear others mislead their posts.
B.They think others have happier lives.
C.They fear others have little interest in the stories.
D.They guess they may be bullied by bad people.
26.How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A.By listing figures. B.By analyzing causes.
C.By making comparison. D.By describing process.
27.What is probably the best title of the passage?
A. Attitude is everything.
B. Every coin has two sides.
C. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
D. If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal.
C
In 2020, Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest survey on the topic ever undertaken. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15, 000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?” Most of them said regret was at least an occasional part of their life. About 21 percent said they felt regretful all the time. Only 1 percent said they never felt regretful.
If you are of the “no regrets” school of life, you may think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn’t the case. Letting yourself be overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To extinguish your regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow but causes you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.
Uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive(认知的) feature. It requires that you go back to a past scene. Imagine that you acted differently to change it, and with that new scene in mind, arrive at a different present-and then, compare that fictional present with the one you are experiencing in reality. Not all regrets are the same, of course. Pink says they come in four basic types, and an instance of regret may involve just one combination.
Many connection regrets overlap (重叠) with moral regrets, which can come about after you go against your own values. For example, you may pride yourself on being a loving person, and thus regret not living up to this image in the relationship you harmed. Moral regrets can also involve just yourself. Maybe you regret not living up to your promise to your health when you ate a whole pizza or skipped the gym.
If not analyzed(分析) and managed, any kind of regret can be harmful to your well-being. Regret is linked to depression and anxiety, and too much regret can negatively affect your immune system. But regret doesn’t have to be put aside and ignored.
28.What could be concluded from Pink’s research?
A.Half of the people felt regretful. B.Most people lived without regrets.
C.None could live a life without regrets. D.Most of the people had regrets.
29.What does the underlined word “extinguish” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Destroy. B.Admit. C.Treasure. D.Experience.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The harm of moral regrets.
B.The importance of promise.
C.The relationship between regrets and values.
D.The connection between reality and imagination.
31.What might the author continue talking about?
A.Types of regrets. B.Causes of regrets.
C.Benefits of experiencing regrets. D.Ways of dealing with regrets.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What if there was a way to get more out of each day? While we all have the same 24 hours, how we use that time influences what we can achieve. Recent research suggests that one way to pack more into your day is to synchronize (使同步)your biological clock to your daily time-table. By doing certain things when you are most active and energetic, you might be able to improve your productivity.
32 This works much like a program regulating the timing of many biological functions ranging from when you sleep to when you wake. You’ve probably noticed that there are certain times during the day when you feel more energetic. 33 Research has shown however, that your body clock is responsible for more than just your sleep-wake cycle. For instance, you may want to adjust your time-table to make most of your mental powers.
34 Studies suggest that cognitive(认知) abilities tend to be at their highest level during the late morning hours, so you might want to deal with those mentally demanding activities before lunch. 35 This is why you might find yourself struggling to focus on those work meetings after lunch.
If you are working on some sort of creative task, it might be a bit different. In a study examining how the time of day influences problem solving, researchers had participants solve analytical(分析性的) problems during times when they were either at their mental best or at less effective times of tiredness. 36 Because the mind is more likely to wander(stop focusing on something) when we are tired, it seems that it can lead people to think in more innovative(创新的) ways.
A. At other times, you might feel tired.
B. You are probably at your sharpest in the morning.
C. Knowing this might help you adapt your own time-table.
D. Your biological clock controls a great deal of how you function.
E. Experts also suggest that attention levels weaken following meals.
F. Changing your biological clock may not be easy, but it could be beneficial.
G. They found that people tend to do their best creative thinking when they are tired.

The night before, his family attended his cousin's wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn't get up on time as usual.
At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant(傲慢的) boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn't know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, "I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar?" Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn't answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad's, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

第一节
Dear Wang Li,
I am so glad to receive your letter. I feel so encouraged to read about the excellence of your teachers and classmates. Here I want to share with you something about my head teacher, Mr. Mao, who has inspired me in my school.
He is knowledgeable, and what he teaches us can hugely broaden our horizons. He is self-disciplined and can also help us get well-organized. Thanks to that, our class has been running properly in such a short time. Last but not least, he is really caring and thoughtful. Most of us students are moved by his kind consideration.
The above is what I want to share with you about my teacher who I admire so much. Look forward to hearing from you about more amazing things happening around you!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punish Fahad. But it was not easy. He felt the heat in his body rising, and his cheeks blushing. Throwing a glance at Fahad, who was chatting happily, holding his head high, Asad suddenly felt a bit sorry for the embarrassment he was going to face. Just at the moment Fahad gasped and cried out in alarm, "Oh hell, where is my wallet?" Some gossips began. Asad heard words of gloat. Overwhelmed by guilt, Asad quickly picked up the wallet and strode to Fahad, "I found it over there, and I think it is yours. " Seeing the dumbfounded face of Fahad, he added, "I thought of sneaking it, of course." Recalling what he had done to Asad, Fahad suddenly hesitated to take the wallet.
Then Fahad said, "Why are you giving back?" Murmuring in a low voice, he dodged Asad's shining eyes, somehow even not daring to look into them. What replied him was a sigh, "Because it belongs to you." After confession, the air seemed still and it became weird that no one uttered a single word. Just at this moment, Asad's stomach seemed to be the first to break the awkwardness by growling loud. To his astonishment, the arrogant boy, Fahad, reached out his hand, stammering, "W…What about having lunch together?" Before Asad could say anything, Fahad quickly added, "Of course, my treat." It was on that very day that Asad made his first friend in the new school, and he truly reckoned the value of sincerity and honesty in a relationship.

Text 1
M: What time does your watch say? Mine has been broken since I got back from holiday. I used the clock in the kitchen to check the time, but it isn’t working either.
W: My watch isn’t here. Let me look at my phone and tell you. (1)
Text 2
W: I enjoyed reading the book, but I wasn’t keen on the main character. She talks rudely to her parents.
M: What do you think made her do that?
W: I think she was deeply unhappy about something from her childhood. (2)
Text 3
M: Look out of the window. We’re flying over the French mountains now. We’ll be in England in an hour. (3)
W: Wow, we’re this far already? It seems like we only just took off from Germany.
Text 4
W: I was rushing to feed the horses this morning when I fell down. I cut my knee quite badly. (4)
M: I did something similar. I slipped over on the ice and hurt my left arm during the winter.
Text 5
W: Did you go anywhere during the winter holiday?
M: Yes. I went back to my hometown with my father. I was brought up there and didn’t leave until I was six. But it has changed a lot. I could hardly tell where anything was after twenty years.
Text 6
M: I’m so glad we came to the garden to celebrate your birthday. The colors are simply amazing.
W: It’s so relaxing here. There’s no wind, just the beautiful singing of birds in the trees and insects in the air. (6)
W: I totally agree. (6) Let’s go down this garden path next. (7) I think it leads to a small waterfall. After that we can get a coffee in the café.
M: Sounds good. (7) I could really do with a relaxing sit-down.
Text 7
M: Hi, I wonder if you could help. I’m looking for some washing liquid, but I can’t find it anywhere. (8)
W: No problem. Follow me, please. It’s in this part of the store. What kind of washing liquid are you looking for? (9)
M: One that cleans clothes.
W: Ha-ha! Yes, I know that. I mean what type of clothes? Is it for colored clothes or white clothes? You get different washing liquid depending on the type of clothes, you see.
M: Oh, right. Er…it’s for dark-colored clothes. (9) There’s a pile of them in my bedroom.
W: Okay, so you’re looking for washing liquid for colored clothes. One more question: is it for a washing machine, or are you going to wash the clothes by hand?
M: It’s for a machine.
W: In that case…here, this is what you’re looking for.
M: Brilliant! Thanks!
Text 8
M: I’ve got great news! We’ve been given the green light to write a television series for a leading production company in America! (11)(13)
W: What? Are you serious?
M: Yes! Do you remember that story competition we entered six months ago in January? (11) The story about a young woman in a foreign country who cannot remember her past… Well, it won!
W: Oh, my goodness! I can’t believe it! But it was meant to be a book, (11) not a television series.
M: The judges obviously saw something in it. The story was sent to the company’s television producers in Los Angeles and they loved it. They are talking about making a ten-part television series this year, and going to launch (发行) a second series next year. (12)
W: A second series? My heart is beating at a hundred miles an hour—I can’t take all of this in!
M: They want us to come over to their head office in New York next week to discuss a deal, (13) all expenses paid! We’re flying from London and they’re paying for the flight, hotel, meals…
W: Wait a minute—New York? Next week? Are you kidding me?
M: I spoke to one of their representatives on the phone. This is really happening!
W: Wow! That’s totally awesome!
Text 9
W: I have to move out of my apartment building at the end of November. (14) Have you heard of any other apartments in the area that might be available during that time?
M: I can check with my landlord. Why are you moving?
W: The owner is doing construction work on the building, and he requires everyone to leave. I’m really upset about it, actually. I’ve lived there for three years. (14)
M: That doesn’t seem fair. You can stay on my couch for a few weeks if you need to.
W: Thanks.
M: I’m actually planning on moving out in April.
W: How come?
M: I got a job in New Zealand. (15) I’m going to be working on the farm.
W: Wow! That sounds incredible! Can I come with you?
M: Sure!
W: I’m only joking. I wouldn’t be able to leave my job. If the timing had worked out better, I could have taken your spot.
M: Yeah, too bad. You know, I’ll have an extra room available in January. (16) You need to find another place to stay for two months, but then you could move in. (16)
W: Really? That would be fantastic! (16)
M: I’ll talk to my landlord about it. He is really nice. (17) As long as we keep paying our rent on time, I don’t think that he’ll mind.
