三、完形填空(共15小题;每小题l分,计15分)
Twenty-five years ago on July 1, 1997, I woke up very late in my apartment in Singapore.
“We’re late for 36 .” I jumped out of bed and woke up my 8-year-old 37 . I finally dressed her and made it to the nearby bus stop 38 .
When we arrived at the school gate, the other kids were going to go 39 . I managed to get her to the back of the line, but my daughter turned to look at me and said, “I want 40 .”
Her mom was not in Singapore that day. She had flown to Hong Kong several 41 earlier for the Philippine newspaper Business Day to 42 the handover(移交) of the city’s return to China.
I had taken the week off from my job to 43 our daughter while her mother was in Hong Kong. I would pick up my daughter from school around midday. We’d sit at a McDonald’s and order Chicken McNuggets. Not exactly a(n) 44 lunch for a growing kid, but that was the food she wanted and, like a lot of parents, that was the 45 way to deal with children. Since my daughter liked 46 a lot, we would go to the apartment’s pool about three or four times that week.
At the end of the day, I would watch the 47 on TV, which had led the whole week with the historic events happening in Hong Kong. I would wonder 48 my wife was in the crowd that was gathering to witness the handover.
25 years later, in Beijing, she tells me that her memory of that time is not so 49 because she was too excited at that moment. 50 my memory of the days around its return to China was the time I spent as a babysitter, although, it is hard to call an 8-year-old a baby.
The whole thing was a lifetime ago. But it is a good memory.

Ned wanted to escape from the Nautilus while we were in the Mediterranean. However, he had no chance. The submarine raced into the Atlantic in two days mostly staying deep under the water. I saw many shipwrecks along the way. Some were very old. Others were more recent. As it surfaced, the submarine turned north.
Ned came to my room. “Tonight!” he said. “Tonight?” I wasn’t ready for this. “Tonight,” he repeated, “we are a few miles off the Spanish coast. It will be dark, and the wind is blowing in the right direction. You agreed, Dr. Aronnax, to escape with me. Remember your promise!” I said nothing. “At nine, I will go to the staircase with Conseil. You will wait in the library for our signal. Everything is ready.”
“The sea is quite rough.” I said.
“Yes, but if we don’t go tonight, we will soon be too far from land!”
As I waited for Ned’s signal, the Nautilus’s engines stopped. I felt a bump as the submarine came to rest on the ocean floor.
The library door opened and Captain Nemo entered. He took me to the window. I found the crew of the Nautilus were gathering some gold from the sand and bringing it to the submarine.
Now I knew how the Captain became so rich. “But of what use is all this gold to you?” I asked.
“It’s of no use to me!” he replied, “but it can help people who are suffering.”
Ned came to my room the next morning. “We were unlucky, the Nautilus stopped just as we were about to escape.”
I told him what I had learned about Nemo and the gold. I hoped that Ned would change his mind, but he didn’t. The Nautilus was going away from the land. Escape was impossible now. Ned was disappointed, but I was not.
At eleven that night, I was surprised that Captain Nemo invited me to go for a night walk under the sea.

How did a young English teacher become famous overnight? I didn’t know the answers until I interviewed Dong Yuhui, one of the most listened-to live streamers in China these days.
He first arrived wearing a black shirt, common sneakers and a calm face and talked in a natural way, just like an old friend telling his story, exactly in the same way as he talks during live streaming(直播).
“It has been a hard time, but we didn’t give up and insisted on live streaming for over 10 hours a day,” Dong said. Perhaps it is an accidental success, but Dong’s words made us believe that what drove his success was not the so-called chances, but the courage of finding hope in difficulty.
“As for future plans, I hope to sell more agricultural products(农产品), which may drive the development of country areas and improve the lives of farmers there.” he said.
Dong, himself a farmer’s son, was born in Tongguan, a small county in Shanxi province. He said his father is his role model, who always tries his best to buy and read newspapers, though he is quite busy.
After hearing the story, I understood why Oriental Selection mainly sell books and agricultural products which are not popular on live streaming platforms because of low profits. In fact, for people following Dong’s live streaming, they are not buying corn or books, but the company’s values for society. Dong’s live streaming style goes beyond the level of material needs. Instead, it fills people with value and culture, so people can feel the same thing as he feels and finally form a natural willingness to buy.
58. What made Dong Yuhui successful according to the passage?
A. Good luck. B. Golden chances. C. His confidence. D. His courage.
59. What does the underlined word “profit” mean?
A. The money they get. B. The interest people have.
C. The value they provide. D. The price people offer.
60. Paragraph 6 mainly tells us _______.
A. what products are sold at Doing’s live streaming
B. why many people prefer Dong’s live streaming
C. how Oriental Selection makes another success
D. what Dong usually talks about during a live stream
61. What can we infer (推测) according to the passage?
A. Many people don’t know why DongYuhui can become so famous.
B. Dong talks like an old friend telling his story during live streaming.
C. Products sold at Dong’s live stream are much better than those of other live streams.
D. Dong’s early life makes him willing to do something for farmers in country areas.
D
Last year, I took a trip to Dunhuang with some friends.
After we left our hotel, we stepped out into a sandstorm that morning. Luckily, many of our group were well-prepared with face masks and caps. I, on the other hand, was not as equipped(配备). I should have learned about the conditions there better.
This was the low-point of the trip, but reparation(补偿) was made that evening with a trip to an amazing cultural show called “Silk Road”. This was a more interesting take on the Silk Road’s history, using dance and song to show the vivid cultural traditions and artistic legacies of Dunhuang and the Silk Road. It was a fully interesting evening.
The next day’s visit to the Mogao Caves was certainly the highlight of the trip. From the outside, they look perfectly common. But upon entering the dry, cool caves, it’s as though you’ve been taken to another world: it’s a great place of ancient artwork with 45, 000 square meters of murals(壁画) and statues, making it the world’s largest collection of Buddhist(佛教的) art. Many of the pink-coloured paints have turned black. Our guide said, “The painters spent much of their lives painting in the near-dark, guided only by rays of natural light and dull oil lamps, and as such, most went blind.”
Out of the darkness of the caves, we stepped into the blinding light of the Gobi, with a view of the Yueyaquan, nestled in the desert bowl, for an afternoon of sand-boarding and camel rides—Silk Road style.
62. What do we know about the writer before the trip?
A. She did preparations carefully. B. She didn’t really look forward to the trip.
C. She didn’t expect to experience a sandstorm. D. She learned very well about Dunhuang.
63. What can we learn from the guide’s words?
A. The Mogao Caves’ artwork stands for Buddhist art.
B. Creating the Mogao Caves’ artwork was very challenging.
C. The ancient artwork at the Mogao Caves was famous.
D. The Mogao Caves’ artwork needed protection.
64. Which of the following is the right order?
①We went sand-boarding and went on a camel ride.
②We left the hotel and stepped out into a sandstorm.
③We walked into the Gobi and visited the Yueyaquan.
④We took a close look at the Caves murals and statues.
⑤We watched an amazing cultural show called “Silk Road”.
A. ②⑤④③① B. ⑤②①④③ C. ②⑤③①④ D. ⑤②③④①
65. Which of the following websites is the article most likely from ________.

This is a story from a meeting held by some people and two things in nature. We call it the Four-Sided Talk. Let’s “listen to” everyone carefully and find out what they think.
An old tree: I am thousands of years old, but I have fewer and fewer friends. I'm afraid I will be cut someday. People cut down many trees to make paper and chopsticks. Soon there will be no trees to make air and to protect people from floods. Mother nature is making many disasters to teach people a lesson.
The river: What the old tree said is right. I not only make the earth more beautiful, but provide the clean water for people and animals. Now I’m sad because people put waste into me, which kills many animals and plants that drink my water. Some people drink this kind of water and get sick, too
People: We have lived on the earth since ancient times. The earth is our home. We have done some harm to our home! From now on, we should make full use of the resources on the earth and protect the earth. Let’s try our best!
The United Nations: We know a little about the environmental problems. Hearing what all of you said, we’ve decided to protect the earth and love the earth. We’ve also made the June 5th World Environment Day.
