Charlie Watts of the British music group the Rolling Stones died on Tuesday at a hospital in London. Watts played the drums for the very successful band for almost sixty years. His publicist, Bernard Doherty, said the musician “passed away peacefully” surrounded by his family.

Watts was respected worldwide for his muscular style of drumming, which he combined with elements of jazz, the favorite music of the artist. He joined the band early in 1963, just a few months following its first public performance.

To the world, he was a rock star. But Watts often said that the experience was tiring, unpleasant, and even frightening. “Girls chasing you down the street, screaming... horrible!... I hated it,”  he told The Guardian newspaper. In another media report, he described the drumming life as a  “cross between being an athlete and a total nervous wreck(神经兮兮的人)”.

Charlie Watts was born in London on June 2, 1941. From childhood, he was crazy about music —jazz, especially. He fell in love with the drums after hearing the music of Chico Hamilton. Watts was not a rock music fan at first. He shared a home with the Stones' leaders  Mick Jagger and Keith Richards because he did not have to pay for the housing. “Keith Richards taught me rock and roll,”  Watts said.  “We'd have nothing to do all day, and we'd play these records over and over again.”

The Stones had searched for months to find a permanent drummer. Richards has spoken about how much the band wanted Watts to join. The guitar player said the band members cut down on expenses so they could pay Watts a good wage. Watts said he believed at first the band would be lucky to last a year.  “Every band I'd ever been in had lasted a week,”  he said. “I always thought the Stones would last a week, then a fortnight, and then suddenly, it's 30years.”

    24. What does the underlined word “muscular” mean in Paragraph 2?

        A. Aggressive.          B. Complex.       C. Fashionable.        D. Powerful.

    25. How did Watts feel about his experience as a rock star?

    A. He enjoyed the fame and attention.

    B. He had a strong dislike for fans and music.

    C. He found the experience exhausting and intolerable.

    D. He considered himself lucky to be a part of the band.

    26.WhydidWattsshareahousewithKeithRichards?

    A. To save accommodation costs.

    B. To practice playing the guitar.

    C. To learn rock and composition.

    D. To be the drummer of the band.

    27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. Watts was unwilling to join the band for low wages.

    B. The band's success depended on a talented drummer.

    C. A band usually lasted for a few months in those days.

D.The band's popularity  was beyond Watts' expectations.

On Dec 4, 2022, Chinese astronauts Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

The astronauts were in orbit for 183 days, during which they oversaw the completion of China's Tiangong space station and several life sciences experiments. They returned with the world's first rice seeds produced in orbit, a feat that allows scientists to examine the effects of microgravity on rice growth so as to find a sustainable food source for long-term space exploration.

One such experiment involved reproducing the entire life cycle of rice for the first time in space. It began with selecting rice seeds carefully, which were then nurtured and monitored as they hatched into seedlings. The astronauts diligently tended to these delicate young plants, which grew into ma true plants producing new seeds. It began on July 29, and after 120 days in orbit they successfully produced new space grains.

The new seeds, along with other bio-samples, have been delivered to the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. They will also be transferred to labs in Shanghai for further research. The institute said researchers would conduct microbiology and cellular analysis to better understand how microgravity affects these plants on a molecular (分子的) level. This would provide key insights on creating new crops that are more adaptive to the space environment.

Zheng Huiqiong, a researcher at the Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said seeds are crucial for growing new crops and supporting humanity's long-term survival in space.

While more research is in the pipeline, Zheng said scientists have already noticed several interesting differences between rice grown on Earth and that grown in space. For instance, the flowering period for the space rice begins slightly earlier than rice planted on  Earth. Flowering is a crucial stage for plant reproductive development.  “The stems for the space rice are also looser, with the dwarf rice variety becoming shorter while the tall shoot rice variety experiencing no change in height,”  she added.

    28. Why were the rice experiments conducted in space?

    A. To gain a thorough insight  into space environment.

    B. To find a long-lasting food supply for space exploration.

    C. To collect diverse space rice seeds for space research.

    D. To explore the impact of microgravity on plants in space.

    29.WhatismainlydiscussedinParagraph3?

     A. The experiment process.        B. The research procedures.

     C. The current new findings.      D. The exploration duration.

    30. How did the researchers handle the newly acquired seeds?

    A. By preserving them in a secure facility.

    B. By shipping  them to labs for further analysis.

    C. By studying their adaptability to microgravity.

    D. By assessing their growth under controlled conditions.

    31. What conclusion can be drawn from Zheng's words?

    A. More advanced research methods are in great demand.

    B. Potential application of the research results is promising.

    C. Space rice varieties commonly suffer decreases in height.

    D. Distinctions between Earth rice and space rice are evident.

    D

Animals appear to predict earthquakes by sensing electricity in the air——the first study to find reliable evidence of the phenomenon has shown.

Cameras revealed an  “amazing” drop in the number of animals up to 23 days before a major quake hit their rainforest home at Yanachaga National Park in Peru. Lead scientist DrRachel Grant, from Anglia Ruskin University, said,  “The results showed that just before the earthquake, animals' activity dropped right down.”

On a normal day the cameras placed around Yanachaga National Park record between 5and 15 animals. But in the 23 days before the earthquake, the number of animals dropped to five or fewer per day. No animals were photographed at all on five of the seven days immediately before the quake.

Another study showed that animal activity remained normal in the park over a different period when seismic (地震的) activity was low. Co-author, professor Friedmann Freund, said, “The cameras were located at an altitude of 900 meters. If air ionization occurred, the animals would escape to the valley below, where there were fewer positive ions (离子). With their ability to sense their environment, animals can help us understand small changes that occur before major earthquakes.”

Other evidence suggested that before the earthquake, the air around the high mountain sites filled with positive ions that can be produced when rocks are placed under stress. Positive ions have been known to cause ill effects in humans as well as animals. Scientists believe the animals were made to feel uncomfortable by the positive ions, leading them to avoid the area.  They are thought to have escaped to lower ground, where the air was less ionized. The findings may help experts develop better short-term seismic forecasts.

    32. How did scientists conduct the study?

    A. By comparing different animals' habits.

    B. By observing animals in high mountains.

    C. By explaining the positive ion phenomenon.

    D. By analyzing images of animals they obtained.

    33. What can be inferred from animal activity before earthquakes?

    A. The ground at a lower altitude is less ionized.

    B. Cameras normally record more animals per day.

    C. Earthquake warnings can be detected in lower places.

    D. The activity of animals and earthquakes is consistent.

    34. What can we learn from the text?

    A. The findings make for accurate seismic forecasts.

    B. Animals tend to be uneasy with more positive ions.

    C. Positive ions make humans and animals depressed.

    D. All the animals remain abnormal before the earthquake.

    35. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Negative Influence of Positive Ions.

    B. Ions' Destruction to the Environment.

    C. Animals’ Behavior Before Earthquakes.

    D. Creatures' Ability to Predict Earthquakes.

    第二节(满分 25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was Christmas Eve. And my sister and I decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work. Mom usually came home about an hour after we got home from school. So we thought there was plenty of time for us to have a secret look at the gifts under the tree.

Since my sister was older, she was in charge. She opened the first gift while I was ordered to stand guard at the big window of our front room. I was to report the possible coming of our mother. I was so excited that I couldn't always keep my eyes on the window. My head moved from the window to my sister and back to the window again .It seemed that I was watching a ping-po ng match.

“ All right!”  my sister shouted. She pulled out a jewelry box and said,  “You know what that means, don't you?”  I shouted, jumping up and down,  “Yeah, it's my turn!” “No,” she said.  “It means that there must be some jewelry here.”  I watched my sister checking the presents under the tree. She was trying to find one small  enough to be necklace. “Hey, that's not fair!  It's my turn!”  I said, feeling upset. However, she just replied,  “Are you watching for Mom?”

I couldn't do anything except standing guard as she opened present after present. Finally, my sister’s curiosity was satisfied. And when she had finished wrapping her last present back up, we traded places. My heart pounded so hard and I could feel my palms sweat and my throat tighten. My sister reminded me to be careful so I wouldn't tear the wrapper. And she reminded me to wrap the present back up the same way that I had found it. After unwrapping few presents, I found it much faster to open one end of a present and look inside.

“ It's cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones!”  I said and smiled. And I pulled the headphones out of the box, wanting to put them on.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为 150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1:Just then, my sister shouted, “Quick! Wrap it back up!  Mom's coming home!”
