It's said that architecture should speak of its time and place, but long for timelessness. It's no wonder that some of the most creative designs are implemented (实施)on college campuses, where students learn from the past and grow from new perspectives. As students from all over the world meet again for the school year, these campuses offer different points of view, not only through their courses, but also through their unconventional building styles. Here are college buildings around the world that present different angles.
    On Island Time
    Venice International University
    VENICE, ITALY
At VIU, located in a lagoon(泻湖)on the island of San Servolo, the only way to get to campus is by water. The architecture is symbolic of the island's rich history —transformed from monastery(修道院)to hospital, with remains of the vineyards and gardens that once covered much of the land.
    Mountain Construction
    University of Cape Town
    CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
Located just below Devil's Peak, this university uses geography as architecture, with the buildings melding(融合)into a mountainous backdrop. It's a setting that comes with risk, though; last year, a wildfire on the slope raged through the campus, destroying several historic buildings, including the library and its special collections.
Restoration efforts are still in progress.
    Dean of Dumplings
    Nanyang Technological University
    SINGAPORE
If this student center has you desire dumplings, you're not alone —the building, actually named The Hive, is also referred to as the “dim sum building” for its similarity to piles of steamer baskets. Not everyone agrees though; The
Architectural Review compared the building to “something of a deserted car-park aesthetic(美感, 美学).”
    21. How can you get to Venice International University?
    A. By bike. B. By train. C. By taxi. D. By boat.
    22. What happened to University of Cape Town last year?
    A. The campus was damaged by accident. B. The buildings survived a natural disaster.
    C. The library and collections were restored. D. The campus was built below Devil's Peak.
    23. Which description of The Hive will The Architectural Review probably agree to?
    A. Simple. B. Lonely. C. Historical. D. Lifelike.
    B
I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southem Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.
    24. How did the writer first respond to Paul's travel plan?
    A. Scared. B. Puzzled. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
    25. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2?
    A. He was a western journalist. B. He had a knowledge of China.
    C. He came to China several times. D. He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.
    26. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?
    A. They honored the ancestors. B. They set off in high spirits.
    C. They satisfied the locals' curiosity. D. They built bonds with people
    27. What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?
    A. To share and reflect on a journey. B. To suggest a new way of travel.
    C. To advocate protection of biodiversity. D. To introduce and promote Chinese culture.
    C
Tech giants Apple and Google are teaming up to create a system that would let smart phone users know when they've come into contact with someone who has COVID-19.
The technology would rely on the Bluetooth signals that smart phones can both send out and receive. If a person tests positive (阳性)for COVID-19, they could inform public health authorities through an app. Those public health apps would then alert anyone whose smart phones had come near the infected person's phone in the prior 14 days. The technology could be used on both Google Android phones and Apple iPhones.
The companies insist that they will preserve smart phone users' privacy and their technology will be used only by public health authorities to trace the spread of COVID-19. Smart phone users can choose to use it. The software will not collect data on users' physical locations or their personally identifiable information. People who test positive would remain unknown to the public, both to the people who came in contact with them and to Apple and Google. “Privacy is of greatest importance in this effort,” the companies said in a joint statement.
The American Civil Liberties Union has warned that using cellphone data to handle the pandemic carries risks of “destruction of privacy”. In a statement on Friday, ACLU cyber security counsel Jennifer Granick said, “The system also can't work well if people don't trust it”. She said that the joint Apple and Google project “appears to reduce the worst privacy risks, but there is still room for improvement”.She added that the contact tracing app should be used only for public health purposes and only for the duration of this pandemic.
Public health officials say the contact tracing -finding people who have been in contact with an infected person will be a key step in lifting shelter in-place restrictions.
It would allow people who are known to have been exposed to the virus to isolate themselves, while letting others recover normal activities.
    28. What is the main purpose of the passage?
    A. to advertise for public health. B. to introduce a contact tracing system.
    C. to warn the public of risks of COVID-19. D. to raise people's awareness of privacy protection.
    29. What do the companies promise to do in particular?
    A. warn people who test positive. B. protect infected people's private information.
    C. work with public health authorities. D. collect data on users' physical locations.
    30. Which of the following is TRUE according to Jennifer Granick?
    A. Public health issues are traced accurately. B. Only people's trust influences the system.
    C. The worst privacy risks has been reduced. D. Jennifer thinks the system should be better.
    31. The system is mainly designed to ________.
    A. ensure infected people's recovery B. guarantee people's normal activities
    C. help prevent the spread of COVID-19 D. encourage all the people to isolate themselves
    D
When given the choice, about 85%of people say they would not want to know about some negative event far in the future. Yet recently millions around the globe have downloaded FaceApp, which allows users to see how they might age in real life.
Many had fun with it, joking that they love the FaceApp old filter. Beneath the humor is a serious subject: How do we learn to relate to our future selves? It's important that we try to because it could help strengthen the long-term decisions that we make. However, we often fail to make sacrifices for the grayer versions of ourselves.
More than half of the respondents(调查对象)in a recent survey of 2, 800 Americans said they rarely or never thought about what their lives might be like 30 years from now. This isn't surprising, since most of us are firmly rooted in the present and thinking about the distant future can seem like a distant priority (优先). My ongoing research might also offer an explanation: We tend to think about our future selves as if they are someone different from who we are today. In an effort to narrow these empathy gaps, my research workmates and I have tried to humanize(使人性化)people's future selves in the same way others have tried to humanize charity receivers. Given that a photograph of one hungry child can spark emotional reactions, and cause viewers to donate, we have presented participants with vivid images of their distant selves.
That seems helpful. In a recently completed project in Mexico, we found that exposure to future self-images led more people to contribute to their pensions. Despite this research, I'm skeptical that the app users will suddenly increase their pension contributions(养老金供款)and care about their health. The silly app isn't paired with an immediate opportunity to change any of these things.
The lesson from FaceApp shouldn't be that we need to marry hi-tech visuals with savings for retirement. The lesson, then, lakes the form of a question: What more can be done to urge us to think about, care for who we will one day become?
    32. What can we learn about FaceApp?
    A. It provides future self-images. B. It is the most downloaded app.
    C. It helps people make decisions. D. It makes people age in real life.
    33. Why do most respondents rarely think of their future life?
    A. They have known future life from FaceApp.
    B. They fail to make sacrifices for their future.
    C. They attach greater importance to the present.
    D. They consider future selves the same as today's.
    34. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Completing a project in Mexico. B. Offering aging images of participants.
    C. Raising contributions among viewers. D. Giving a photograph of a hungry child.
    35. What's the author's attitude to FaceApp?
    A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Ambiguous. D. Unfavorable.
    第二节:(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分))
    阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
    Learn to Cite Sources(引用资料)
During your university education, you'll be exposed to ideas and scientific theories of scholars and scientists. Unavoidably, your own ideas will be shaped by the ideas you come across. 36 That means you should go beyond what you learn from your textbooks or in the library. Your original work is the basis for your
professor's evaluation of your performance. Thus, academic honesty is fundamental in your university education. It demands that you cite the source materials you base your own work on. 37
Correctly citing your sources helps you distinguish your own ideas from those of other scholars. On the readers' side, it permits a reader to determine the depth of your research. 38 On the contrary; lack of citing will only raise your reader's doubt.
So you need to learn when to cite and how to provide an adequate or accurate reference list. If you fail to cite your sources, whether deliberately or carelessly, you will be found responsible for plagiarism (抄袭) 39 If you are not sure, ask your professor for guidance before submitting the paper or report. Keep in mind this general rule: when in doubt, cite!
40 For example, students from East Asia may think that copying directly from sources is the proper way to do research. Students in France, preparing for the final examination, may be encouraged to memorize whole passages and copy them into papers. Those cultural differences can lead to false assumptions about academic expectations in the country you study in.
    A. Some university students may cheat in different ways.
    B. It also allows a reader to appreciate your original contribution to the research.
    C. Not knowing academic regulations is an unacceptable excuse for such behavior.
    D. The academic challenge you face is to make something original
    E. These include other scholars' ideas, figures, graphs and so on.
    F. Often, students want to use others' opinions to support their own essays.
    G. For international students, it is important to know local academic expectations.

    A Midnight Rescue
It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers. Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight. It was urgent so there was no time to hesitate. They headed into the forest.
The forest was black and silent. A little way into it they reached a fork(岔路)in the earth path. Harry and David took the left path. They walked in silence, their eyes on the ground, watching out for the traps like big pits(坑)set by the illegal hunters. Every now and then a ray of moonlight through the branches above lit a spot of scarlet(猩红的)blood on the fallen leaves.
David saw that Harry looked very worried, asking, “Could Unicom be hurt that badly?” Harry answered, “If we can't find it as soon as possible, it doesn't stand much chance to survive.” Of course, Unicom was not the animal in fairy tales but the nickname of a 3-year-old elephant, the last wild elephant in this forest. The nickname was given by the biodiversity rescuers who were protecting every member in this forest. They knew Unicorn was obedient and not afraid of human beings and that sometimes put it in danger. “Without it, the forest was not complete. Those illegal hunters should be thrown into prison.” Harry thought, carrying his first aid kit on his back and walking forward with his flashlight.
It seemed that thick fog would come at any time, which would increase the danger. Harry hurried into the heart of the forest with David. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper. There were blood splashes on the roots of a tree, as though the poor creature had been struggling around in pain close by. “We must hurry up”, said Harry.

Strive to Live out Our Dream
Since I got into senior high school, I've been dreaming of studying in a key university in Shanghai, which is a dynamic city and appeals to me. To be a good programmer is my fighting goal. However, easily distracted by things around myself, I find it hard to stay focused on study sometimes. And my confidence gets defeated quite often because of my poor grades in math.
To achieve my dream, I've worked out a study plan. From now on, besides listening carefully in class, I will turn to my teachers and fellow students to make up for what I've missed in class and do more exercises to improve my scores of all subjects, especially math. I'm firmly convinced that it is persistence that makes one's dream come true. Hopefully, I will get admitted to ideal university next year through my great efforts.

However, it was really not easy for them to find it. That's because thick fog came, covering almost everything. They had to bend down to search for clues like blood splashes or footprints, which made them walk more slowly, ears sharper than usual. Suddenly, painful roars came to the rescuers and in front of them lay the young elephant. “Look! Unicorn!” Harry rushed forward, crying excitedly. It looked exhausted because a wound on its left front leg was bleeding badly.
Without delay. Harry knelt down to do first aid on its wound with David holding the flashlight. Fortunately, everything needed was available in the first aid kit. Calmly and skillfully, Harry conducted an operation on Unicorn immediately, and it seemed more obedient than before. Therefore, it didn't take much time for Harry to stop the bleeding as an experienced rescuer. And after a while, Unicorn was able to stand up and walked away. It was rescued! Waving goodbye to it, Harry and David felt relieved. At this moment, the whole forest woke up, the moonlight fading while winds singing welcome to the dawn.

    Text 2

M: I'm glad you liked it. (4)I just wanted to say thank you for taking me sailing last weekend.
    Text 5
M: That was so good! I'm so glad I read the book first, otherwise I wouldn't have understood most of the story.
W: I agree. The music was also really good, and the acting, too. (5)
Text 6 W: Jason, don't you think the job offer from Morgan Stanley is special? Why didn't you take it? (6)
M: I know it was going to be a great job, but my wife didn't want me to move to another city for work. (6)
    W: Why not?
M: She's worried that trying to handle two small kids by herself would be too much for her in a new city.
W: Is there anyone else who could help her?
M: Not really. We had a bad experience with a lady who helped with the cooking and cleaning She just quit one day. She said she didn't like being around dogs, but she had never said anything before. Ever since then, my wife says she doesn't want to hire another person.
W: Well, it sounds like it was for the best. You know . . . if you ever need a babysitter, I'd be happy to do it. (7)
    Text 7
W: I don't see you at the gym anymore. (8)Have you been busy lately?

W: Good for you. I have a friend from Switzerland who can speak three languages. Isn't that amazing? She makes me want to challenge myself more. (15)
M: Learning a new language is always a good idea, but if you're not going to use it, then what's the point?
W: I agree. That's why I've asked the art teacher at school about how to start oil painting M: It must be expensive. You need to buy all those colors to paint with.
W: That's what I thought, too, but you can mix most of the colors yourself. I only need to buy red, blue, yellow and white. (16)
M: Good. So, when can I see your first work of art?
W: Well, I should have my supplies by Friday. I'll show you a few the following week. You just have to promise me one thing.
    M: What's that?
    W: Don't laugh.
    Text 10
In 2014, Amazon released the world's first voice-controlled “smart assistant”, (17) called the Echo. It performed a variety of functions, including setting alarms, creating to-do lists, and providing real-time information such as weather, traffic and other news. Two years later, Google came out with the $180 Google Home. (17)In 2017, the toy company Mattel came out with Aristotle, their idea of a personal assistant, aimed at kids. (19)If you are in the market for one of these smart assistants, there are a number of things to consider. For instance, Google Home can answer a wide variety of questions and has a music library of 35 million songs. (18)It also has many functions that work well with the TV, and is $50 cheaper than Amazon Echo. Echo can all be operated just by voice command. It has a music library of 2 million songs. Mattel's Aristotle can do most of what the other two can, but is meant to be more of a personal companion to children. (19)(20) It can be used as a baby camera in your child's early years, and still be useful until around middle school. It plays interactive games with them, (20)reads to them, and serves as an instructional resource as the children grow up. In summary, all three have their benefits.
