When school started on that warm August day, I threw myself into everything I did, including playing volleyball. I decided to become beautiful, or at the very least, thin. I stopped eating completely. Soon I began losing weight, which excited me, and I even grew to love the tiredness and light-headedness (头晕) that came with my poor diet, for those feelings meant that I was winning.

As the season went on, things became tense between my head volleyball coach, Coach Smith, and me. She felt that something was wrong with my health. She talked with me about my eating and was angry that I wouldn't listen to her when she tried to make me eat. She tried to persuade me in a determined way and so we fought constantly. Then my hunger started to affect my performance. I was so tired that practice was becoming a struggle. One afternoon, with hurt in her eyes, Coach Smith asked me what I had eaten and I told her nothing yet. She looked at me, disappointment in her eyes, knowing she couldn't make me stop, and walked away.

A couple of weeks later, I attended a formal dinner for our volleyball team. I stood there as my coach said something nice about me. I realized then that I had ruined my senior year by being disrespectful, and that I had probably ruined hers as well. So that evening I wrote her a letter apologizing to and thanking her.

Then one Saturday, as I was reading in the library, I felt someone gently take my arm and say softly, “Lynn Jones, how are you doing?” I looked up and saw the familiar face. “Thanks for the letter,” she said. “It meant a lot.”

When I think of a coach, I think of someone above me, someone who gives instruction ---not a friend. But Coach Smith is different, and, like any other good friends, she dealt with my problem in a determined way even when I hated her for it at that time. I didn't deserve her kindness, but she gave it anyway. I will forever be grateful for her help, and now for her friendship.

    24. How did the author feel when she had a poor diet with a sense of tiredness?

    A. Awkward.   B. Proud.    C. Anxious.      D. Annoyed.

    25. Why did the author fight with Coach Smith?

    A. She refused to go on a diet.    B. She caused failure of her team.

    C. She changed the training course.   D. She stuck to losing weight.

    26. What's the author's purpose of writing a letter to Coach Smith?

    A. To quit the volleyball team.     B. To improve her performance.

    C. To say sorry and express her thanks.   D. To build a close relationship with the coach .

    27. What is the best title for the text?

    A. An Unexpected Friendship    B. A Fight with My Coach

    C. A Strict Volleyball Coach    D. My Way of Losing Weight

    C

The power was out, the cell phone reception was bad, and the water stopped running for most of South Padre Island, a normally warm beach town in the southernmost tip of Texas that had been hit by a deadly winter storm.

But amid freezing temperatures that showed no signs of warming soon, dozens of residents went out on foot and by boat to rescue the island’s famous and endangered sea turtles (海龟). By late Thursday, volunteers working with Sea Turtle, Inc., a local rescue group, had transported more than 3,500 unconscious (昏迷的) turtles to the town’s Convention Center. Conservationists (自然环境保护主义者) looked to gradually increase animals’ body heat as they lay on blankets and small pools indoors.

But Wendy Knight, the executive director of Sea Turtle, Inc., feared that hundreds of those turtles rescued in Texas might have already died in the cold. “A winter storm like this could have the potential to wipe out years of hard work, and we are going through it with no electricity and a unique, more serious challenge to our efforts,” she told The Washington Post.

The turtles grow in the ocean’s thick, underwater vegetation and keep the ecosystem balanced. But when water temperatures drop below about 50 degrees Fahrenheit---a rarity in South Patre Island--- the coldness can cause them to become unconscious. A turtle’s heart rate lowers and its body will float unconscious above the water, sometimes washing ashore. This state can put them at risk of be caught by predators (捕食者), being attacked by boats and even drowning.

Before the weekend was up, the rescued turtles already appeared to be filling up the volunteers’ available space. The turtle rescue put out a call for help, and soon much of the island was involved in an all-hands-on-deck effort to transport turtles to the South Padre Island Convention Centre, where generators could keep the animals warm. Knight expressed her thanks to the volunteers, but she added that their efforts would eventually come to nothing without additional help from the power companies.

    24. What happened after South Padre Island was hit by the deadly winter storm?

    A. There was no communication.

    B. The severe cold froze most of the area.

    C. The power was in limited supply.

    D. The public transport was stopped.

    25. What was Wendy Knight worried about?

    A. The sea turtles might become endangered.

    B. Another winter storm might be around the corner.

    C. The rescued turtles might have failed to survive the cold.

    D. The volunteers might have been discouraged due to the challenge.

    26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A. Where the turtles’ natural habitat is.

    B. How the turtles get on with the ecosystem.

    C. How low temperatures affect the turtles.

    D. Why South Padre Island has such a cold winter.

27 What plays a key role in the turtle’s rescue according to Wendy Knight?

    A. Calling for more volunteers.

    B. Regaining the electricity supply.

    C. Introducing more generators.

    D. Improving transport safety.

    D

Most people are hoping the recent stranding (搁浅) of the 1,300-foot, 220,000-ton Ever Given container ship (集装箱货运船) in the Suez Canal was a one-off---just a case of a very big ship getting stuck in a narrow waterway. However, more than 100 ships of similar size are passing through the world’s waterways, and even bigger ones are being built.

Capt. Andrew Kinsey, a senior marine-risk consultant (海洋风险顾问) for a global financial services firm, says with heavy weather in the North Pacific Ocean over the past year, a lot of containers are going overboard (落水). Part of the problem is the way the ultra-large ships handle at sea with towering stacks (堆叠) of containers, especially in strong winds.

Alan Murphy, chief executive of a container-shipping research and advisory firm in Copenhagen, Denmark, says it’s difficult to know whether there has been an increase in the number of containers going overboard or if trans-Pacific container losses over the past year have just received more attention. In a November report, the World Shipping Council found the number of such incidents to be falling in recent years, although the report does not cover 2020. There is no central database for reporting container losses, so it’s not known exactly how many containers fall overboard, Murphy says.

Murphy says container ships are often fully loaded nowadays, as demand for consumer products has jumped during the corona virus pandemic. “In the past, these huge ships have never really sailed as fully loaded as they are now,” he says. “Obviously, the more the ship carries, the greater the risk of an incident happening.”

“The stranding of Ever Given in the Suez Canal is a warning,” Kinsey says. “ We’ve been bring up the issue of size in our yearly safety and shipping review and in papers for over five years.”

Carrying more containers needs bigger and wider ships, which means it is harder for them to sail through narrow waterways like the Suez Canal and move when they get stuck.

    32. What can we imply from paragraph 1?

    A. It might be a tough task to build bigger ships.

      B. Costs of overseas shipments might rise sharply.

      C. There might be changes in the world’s waterways.

      D. More accidents like the recent stranding might happen.

    33. What did the World Shipping Council find in the November report?

    A. No database for reporting container losses had been created.

      B. Trans-Pacific container losses had received more attention.

    C. The number of container losses had dropped in recent years before 2020.

      D. More container losses happened in 2020 than in the past few years.

    34. What leads to fully loaded container ships nowadays according to Murphy?

    A. The extreme weather.    B. The increasing size of ships

    C. The slow transportation.    D. The growing demand for consumer goods.

    35. What do Kinsey’s words in the 5th paragraph show?

    A. Warnings about the risks of stranding are given yearly.

    B. Concern about larger ships has been voiced for some time.

    C. Some container ships can carry as many goods as Ever Given.

    D. Ships bigger than Ever Given won’t be allowed through the Suez Canal.

    第二节:(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多途选项。

Apps (short for applications) are becoming increasingly popular nowadays, and with good reason. They can help you out in just about every area of your life, whether it's keeping fit, communicating with others, or even learning a language.   36   Here is what you should think about before downloading an app for language learning.

Learn from different sources (not just apps).

Any experienced language learners will tell you that the beauty of mastering a foreign language is the world which it opens up to you. This is a world of different sources of information, from newspapers and books to radio, TV, the Internet, and even real people. Would you limit yourself to one medium in your native language?   37

Establish your purpose and plan your habits.

Do you want to be fluent in weeks or do you use apps for goal setting and habit forming? Good apps are designed to help you fit your studies into your timetable.   38   These apps encourage habit building, because the successful formation of a habit ensures your stable and regular return.

      39

I dont mean posting your progress online. I mean social for real. I owe the speed of progress I made in Italian to the support of Jim, my partner in study time. Find a friend to accompany you. Take an evening class. Borrow a book. Buy a book. Book a week away and attend a language school. Just don't forget your phone!

Frankly speaking, the combination of apps, a language school, Jims support, evening classes and a chosen book or two proved extremely effective.   40

    A. I recommend it.

    B. Remembered that an app is just a tool.

    C. Make it social.

    D. I encourage you to use apps as often as you can.

    E. Probably not, so why do you do so in your new language?

    F. The best apps adapt themselves based upon your behavior.

    G. However, you need to know how to use them properly to really benefit.

What is the difference between a good athlete and a great one?

A sports psychologist suggests there are three things that all great athletes have on common. First, they were not afraid to compete other people. Second, great athletes are those which are positive about them and their abilities. Great athletes know that how to deal with stress. They are unable to cut out things in daily life that adds to their stress, such as unhealthy food or bad friendships.
