    (2022秋·江苏·九年级统考期中)Love Seeds
    —Wang Wei
    The red beans grow in southern land;
How many load in spring the trees?
    Collect them till full is your hand;
    They would recall sweet memories.
Translated by Xu Yuanchong and simplified by the editor
①Love is a popular theme in Chinese poems. What symbols do you think best stand for love? The heart, rose or chocolate? This time we are going to look at a classic Chinese poem, Love Seeds. It was written by the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei who had a different understanding of the symbol of love.
②In the first two lines, the poet expresses his feelings of missing his friend, who lives in the southern part, by describing the growth of red beans in spring. In classic Chinese poems, poets prefer to express feelings in an indirect or symbolic way. When describing the natural environment or showing some symbols, Chinese poets always mean more than what’s described on the surface.
③In Chinese culture, red beans are seen as “love seeds”, which have a strong cultural meaning. Because they are often hard, come in a heart shape and can be stored for a long time, those beans have long been used as a symbol of love and loyalty between lovers.
④In the last two lines, the poet wishes his faraway friend to collect as many red beans as possible, as the beans will bring back his friend’s memories of him.
⑤Instead of showing love to others by directly saying “I miss you” or using flowery language, this short poem can make readers feel deep love.
4.Who did Wang Wei write this poem to?
    A.His wife. B.His parents. C.His friend. D.His children.
5.Wang Wei expresses feelings by ________ in this poem.
A.coming straight to the point B.using the imagination
    C.using flowery language D.using a symbol
6.What does Wang Wei want to show in this poem?
A.He misses someone. B.He loves spring very much.
C.He loves the beauty of nature. D.He wishes to go back to his hometown.

(2022秋·江苏南京·九年级南京市科利华中学校考期中)From a young age, I was very interested in language. I remember a holiday in Spain when I was 7. Two boys asked if I spoke Norwegian. When I couldn’t make a reply, they ran off, leaving me upset. Back home I searched shops for old language books and enjoyed trying all these different words to express what was in my head. I thought it was amazing, and still do.
At university, I did a combined languages degree, studying French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. From then on, it became a way of life. After graduation, I worked as an au pair (互惠生) in Germany, and finally studied German. I cycled to the Netherlands, picking up Dutch. It turned out that speaking a language abroad with local people was an ideal way to learn, especially in a time before the Internet.
Traveling to learn a language became an adventure (探险)—it came with huge excitement and of course lonelier, more complex moments. I have found that the speed of leaning depends on the language and how much attention I pay to it. If it is similar to a language I already speak, I find I can use it within weeks, although perhaps not so well.
Languages have had a big influence on my personal life, too. In 2003, during a train ride in the Balkans, I met my future wife—she is Macedonian (马其顿人), with a south-east Slavic languages and literature degree.
I’ve studied more than 50 languages now. I generally use 15 weekly and more than 30 in a year. I also support native and endangered languages. Having a world of languages out there and not learning them is like watching TV in black and white and not knowing there is color. They will continue to enrich me for a lifetime.
The most important thing about learning languages is the ability to build bridges with other people. They allow you to experience life differently.
7.In which order was the article written?
A.Space order. B.Time order. C.From specific to general. D.From general to specific.
8.What is the correct order of the following sentences?
① I studied four languages at the same time.
② I support native and endangered languages.
③ I met my future wife during a train ride in the Balkans.
④ I traveled, worked and studied languages in different countries
⑤ I found it amazing to express my feelings and thoughts in a new language.
    A.⑤①③④② B.⑤④①③② C.⑤①④②③ D.⑤①④③②
9.What is the best title for this article?
    A.Leaning a language B.A language lover’s life
C.Talking with the world D.Traveling to learn a language

(2022秋·江苏南京·九年级统考期中)Know when to skim. Skimming can be used to gain a shallow (浅层的) understanding of a text. It can be used to scan a newspaper for interesting material or to get the important concepts out of a textbook in preparation for a test. It’s not a good choice for thorough reading.
Read titles and section headings. Begin by only reading the chapter titles and any subheadings at the start of large sections. Read the headlines of each newspaper article or the table of contents in a magazine.
Read the beginning and end of a section. Textbooks usually have introductions and summaries of each chapter. For other texts, just read the first and last paragraph of a chapter or an article.
You can read quickly if you’re familiar with the subject, but don’t try to speed read as fast as possible. You’re saving time by skipping most of the section, but you do need to understand what you’re reading.
Circle important words throughout the text. If you still wish to learn more, brush your eyes rapidly across the page rather than reading normally. As you know the main idea of the section, you can pick out key words that mark important areas. Stop and circle the following words:
Words that are repeated several times
The main ideas—often including words from the title or section header
    Proper nouns
    Italics, bold text, or underline
    Words you don’t recognize
Pay attention to pictures and diagrams (图表). These often present a lot a information without much reading required. Take a minute or two to make sure you fully understand each diagram.
Read the first sentence of each paragraph, if unsure. If you are uncertain about the subject, read the start of each paragraph. The first one or two sentences will teach you the main points.
Study using your annotations (注解). Go back and look over the words you’ve circled. Can you “read” these and get a general sense of what the text is about? If you don’t understand a certain word, try reading a few sentences around that word to remind yourself of the topic.
10.Which of the following is NOT advised by the writer of the article?
A.Skimming isn’t suitable for all types of reading.
B.You can read as quickly as you want if you know how to skim.
C.Spend some minutes reading the pictures and diagrams in the text.
D.If you can not remember the subject you are reading, try to read the start of each paragraph.
11.What should be used as the best title for the article?
    A.How to learn speed reading
    B.Skim the text
C.Skimming and scanning, two powerful reading strategies
D.Read the start and the end of the article
12.When you are reading quickly part of one article below, which word/phrase should be possibly circled?
Whenever you meet any difficulty in life, please stick to your dream. Never give up. Most people may find it hard to stick to their dream in the past once they are caught in trouble. However, they always end up regretting (后悔) the decisions they have made after they walk out of the difficulty and hope they could stick to the dream.

    A.always B.give up C.stick to D.hard
13.Where can you find this article?
    A.In the newspaper. B.In a magazine.
    C.In a language book. D.In a diary.

Feeling upset (沮丧的) is part of life. Sometimes stress happens at home or school. It may leave us feeling angry or worried. We cannot control (控制) everything that happens around us. However, we can learn to calm ourselves down. With practice, we can learn useful ways to keep cool when we feel upset.
    Remove yourself from the situation
Disagreements with other people can be hard to deal with. They can lead to upset feelings. Sometimes we need to get away from the situation. It is OK to say, “I’m going to take a break.” Then you can go for a walk. Or you can find a quiet place to sit. The purpose is to give yourself some space to calm down.
    Accept your thoughts
Feeling upset is natural. Everyone gets upset sometimes. Accepting that we are upset is healthy. If we accept it, we can choose what to do about it. We can even talk to ourselves about how we’re feeling. When you are upset, say something like this in your head, “I’m feeling really upset right now. That is OK. I can control what I do next.”
    Change your language
When we’re upset, sometimes we use unkind words to punish ourselves. We don’t have to do that. To calm down, we can try to say something to make ourselves feel comfortable. For example, instead of saying, “I am always in trouble,” we might say, “I made a mistake. It happens to everyone. Next time I’ll do it differently.”
    Do breathing (呼吸) exercises
When we feel upset, the heart beats faster. The body prepares as if it is going to be in a fight. You can use breathing to calm down. If possible, find a place where you can sit comfortably. Then focus on (专注于) your breath, breathing deeply and slowly. This practice slows down the heart and helps us calm down.

What’s your dream job? How much do you know about it? A group of students from Tianjin found a very common problem among young teenagers: Most of them have little idea about their career plans as there is too little help from school or family.
To offer teenagers helpful advice on career, the students from Tianjin TEDA NO.1 Middle School started a project called “Dian Zhi Cheng Shi (点职成诗)”. “Our survey shows that 72% of students want to know more about different jobs. (2022秋·江苏南京·九年级南京市科利华中学校考期中)Chinese scientists found Changesite-(Y)—the sixth new lunar mineral in moon samples (样品) brought back by the Chang’e 5 lunar probe (探测器) in December 2020. It has become the first lunar mineral found by Chinese scientists, making China the third nation in the world, after the United States and Russia, to have achieved such a success, reported China Daily.
Changesite-(Y) looks crystal clear like a diamond (钻石). But its chemical content (化学组成) is different from any other known mineral. It has a high level of rare earth, reported China Science Daily. Li Ziying, chief scientist of the lunar sample research, said that the finding of this new mineral will help researchers study the history and physical traits (特征) of the moon. The value of the rare earth in it will also be studied.
Besides the new mineral, scientists also measured the content of helium-3 (氦-3) from the Chang’e 5 samples. Helium-3 is a valuable fuel (燃料) that can provide safer nuclear energy (核能). It is not radioactive (放射性的) and would not produce dangerous waste. On Earth, we have only 15 to 20 tons of helium-3 that can be used. But after studying the moon’s soil, scientists said there could be at least 1 million tons of helium-3 on the moon. That’s enough for all people on Earth to have clean energy for 10,000 years!
33.How many kinds of lunar minerals have scientists found so far?
    A.One. B.Three. C.Six. D.Seven.
34.According to the article, what still waits to be studied by scientists about the moon?
    A.Its shape. B.Its history. C.Its looks. D.Its size.
35.What does the discovery of Helium-3 from the Chang’e 5 samples tell us?
A.Helium-3 will not produce any waste. B.Helium-3 on the moon may be radioactive.
C.The moon can provide us with enough clean energy. D.There is enough nuclear energy on the moon for humans.

(2022秋·江苏·九年级期中)Receiving messages and watching short videos on the phone are becoming more and more popular in China. It can help people get the latest information and communicate with friends. But I think more books should be read besides the textbooks, the more, the better. It can open my eyes and improve my language skills. Of course, it can also help me to get good grades. Do you know how to read more and learn more? Here are some tips for you.
◆ Clear your purpose for reading
Before reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book. Most people read for two main reasons, pleasure or knowledge. Clearing about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read, but also remind you why reading the book is important to you, so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.
◆ Read only what you are interested in
No matter what you are reading, it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may tell you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.
◆ Give up books that you don’t enjoy
You may have chosen books that you are interested in, and they are right to your purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don’t enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading, give it up. Remember reading shouldn’t be a boring thing.
◆ Set a goal for your reading
It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don’t have a due date! I don’t need to return those books. Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.

Thirty-Six Stratagems(计谋), which show our ancient Chinese wisdom, are our ancient culture treasure. And many of these stratagems can still be put into practice in many fields, such as war, politics, business and even daily life. The following are four of them. Let’s enjoy the charm of our traditional culture.
Stratagem OneWhen a thief is in your house, you’d better shut your doors at once in order to prevent him from running away.
Why? For our ancient Chinese, there are two reasons. First, if you let your enemy run away, he will come back. Second, once your enemy succeeds in running away, it is dangerous for you to chase him.
Stratagem TwoThis stratagem is from a poem by Du Fu, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty. A line in the poem reads: “To shoot the man on horse-back, shoot his horse first; To catch the robbers, capture their leader first.”
In a war if you want to beat the enemy, attack the leader first. Once the leader is caught, their forces will break down and fall into chaos.
Stratagem ThreeChinese always believe that tigers are more powerful when they are in the mountains. Once they leave mountains, they will become less powerful. And there are a few Chinese sayings linking tigers with mountains.
The stratagem advises you not to directly attack an enemy in his own area. Instead, you should try to make him leave his place first, making him lose the geographical advantage. In this way, your enemy will be beaten easily.
Stratagem FourExperienced fishers all know how to prevent a hooked fish breaking the line. Move the fish line from side to side to gradually make the fish calm down and get tired, and then you can catch it easily.
In the same way, once your enemy is trapped, he will often struggle, trying to run away. Leave him the false feeling that he still has a chance to run away. When he gets tired and loses his guard, you can capture him with less difficulty.
42.Which of the following describes Stratagem Two?
A.Shutting the door to catch the thief. B.Catching your enemy’s leader first.
C.Letting the enemy off to catch him later. D.Tricking the tiger out of the mountain.

A.it is wise for you to attack enemies in their own places
B.it is impossible for people to make others lose their guard
C.it is dangerous to give your enemies a chance to run away
D.it is better to shoot the man on horse-back first not the horse
44.Where can we probably read Thirty-Six Stratagems?

“Have you done the MBTI personality test?” “Yes, I’m an INTJ,” replied Gu Ailing in a recent interview. Gu’s response became a hot topic online and drew people’s attention to the test.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a test designed to discover a person’s personality type. The test result is based on four sets of opposing qualities: Extroversion (外向) VS Introversion, Sensing VS Intuition (直觉), Thinking VS Feeling and Judging VS Perceiving (感知). After answering more than 90 questions, test-takers get their four-letter personality result, including a detailed description. Gu Ailing’s result of INTJ is one of the 16 possible personality types that the test shows.
Developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers in the US in the 1940s, the test grew to become the standard for personality tests. Many companies and organizations use it to help them choose people for certain positions. And now in China, Internet users are using it as a tool to guide their lives and relationships.
The key problem with the MBTI is that the test is too “black and white” according to The Guardian. The results place people into only one of each of the four categories; for example, someone is either an introvert or an extrovert. But many people would surely sit somewhere in the middle of these two. In short, the MBTI only gives a “simplified view of human personality”, claimed The Guardian article. It can only really describe the surface of who people are. And don’t forget that people’s behavior and characteristics also change over time. Tests and tools that help people better understand who they are and how they think are very powerful and can still help in some parts of life. As science and technology develop, people can look forward to more accurate tests that truly embrace how wonderfully complex and ever-changing humans really are.
52.What does the article tell us about the MBTI?
A.It was developed about 90 years ago. B.It has been supported by psychology experts.
C.It groups people into 16 different personality types. D.It was created to help companies choose people for certain positions.
53.How can people discover their personality types?
A.By giving a detailed description. B.By answering more than 90 questions.
C.By changing the standard for personality tests. D.By reading the 16 possible personality types directly.
54.The underlined word “simplified” in the passage probably means ________.
    A.in general B.in detail C.trustworthy D.too simple
55.What is the purpose of writing this article?
A.To find out how to practice MBTI. B.To explain why MBTI is becoming popular.
C.To generally describe the MBTI personality test. D.To help readers understand themselves through MBTI.

(2022秋·江苏南京·九年级南京市科利华中学校考期中)It is easy to get carried away in an argument. Having a rational (理性的) conversation with someone who has a different opinion might seem like a challenge. One way is to treat the other person with empathy (同理心).
The Empathy Challenge is an exercise created by Zoe Chance, senior lecturer at the Yale School of Management. At Yale, Chance teaches a course called “Mastering Influence an Persuasion” where students learn to communicate more effectively. In her blog, Chance explains that it’s important to listen to people who disagree with you. “As they explain their position, you listen for their underlying (潜在的) values. Finally, you look for common ground as you reflect those values back. That’s it.”
Chance first took this challenge herself before asking her students to try. As she couldn’t understand why many people chose to vote for Donald Trump, she found three Trump’s voters and spoke with them. Through asking questions, Chance was able to empathize with them and realize they had similar feelings. One man, an Orthodox Jew, explained that he supported Trump because Trump’s daughter and son-in-law are Jewish. The next man was a Russian immigrant crazy about freedom. The third was a lawyer who believed that authenticity (真实性) was important in political leaders.
Although Chance and those people had different political beliefs, they were able to relate to the life values of others. And that’s the point of the exercise — to understand others as fellow human beings.
56.Which of the following does the Empathy Challenge practise?
    A.Listening skills. B.Mastering skills
    C.Communication skills. D.Problem solving skills.
57.According to Chance, what should people do when dealing with a disagreement?
A.Reflect their own values. B.Explain others’ position.
C.Share their similar feelings. D.Find common ground between two sides.
58.Why did the three men vote for Donald Trump?
A.Because of their life values. B.Because of Trump’s belief.
C.Because of their family background. D.Because of Trump's authenticity.

(2021秋·江苏扬州·九年级统考期中)From driver-less cars to voice control in the house AI (人工智能) has developed so fast. “AI is going to change the world more than anything in the history of mankind. More than electricity.” said AI expert Dr. Kai-Fu Lee. That’s true. According to research by scientists at the University of Oxford, AI will be better than humans at translating languages by 2024, writing school essays by 2026, writing a bestselling book by 2049, and treating diseases by 2053. In the next few years, these are just a few examples of how AI will change the future. But wait, what about jobs? Will they steal our jobs in the future?
“AI will take our jobs!” is the most common fear. In fact, with AI automating (自动操作) all kinds of work, AI will create 58 million new AI jobs by 2022. There is an excellent chance that AI will replace humans in most of the mental tasks by 2030. However, that does not mean it will take away jobs. Taking India as an example, three times more companies are working on AI-based projects and this is likely to continue. India almost doubled its AI engineers in 2019 (from 40,000 in 2018 to 72,000 in 2019) but still faces a talent shortage. Top technology companies are in a race to implement AI in our day-to-day lives — which will lead us to a really exciting AI future.
AI Future is coming soon! And there will be more new jobs in the AI industry. Do you want to be a part of this fourth industrial revolution (革命)? Will you upgrade your skills to stay ahead or will you remain still and slow in the industry? The choice remains with you. With the process of education and training, now is the time to prepare for the age of AI.
59.According to the passage, Dr.Kai-Fu Lee thinks that AI will ________.

(2021秋·江苏苏州·九年级统考期中)Can we forget bad memories? Someone might tell you that time is the only “cure”. But this might be not true.
Researchers at Canada’s McGill University have tested a pill that can help you forget bad memories. They tested it on 60 people and found it to be successful.
All 60 people had experienced painful romantic relationships and wanted to forget them. In the study, they were asked to write about these bad memories. Then, they took a pill that is usually used to treat high blood pressure. They then recalled their bad memories by reading what they wrote earlier. In the end, they talked about their feelings, saying that they were finally able to forget their bad experiences.
Dr. Alain Brunet. who led the study believes that the pill can ease the pain that bad memories bring. People can take it after bad things happen to them.
How did the pill do this? In fact, your memories change all the time. They’re like text files on your computer. Every time you recall and “open” the files, you might happen to make some changes and “save” them. Researchers believe that the pill can stop proteins (蛋白质) in the brain from “re-saving” these memories. This means some details of the memory are lost.
However, there are some ethical (伦理的) worries about this treatment. Some people might use it to forget things that they should be learning from such as when they committed a crime. People are discussing which kinds of memories should be forgotten with this pill.
63.The study found that the pill can help people ________.
A.recall happy memories B.remember thing more easily
C.control their blood pressure D.forget bad experiences
64.The 60 people who tested the pill did NOT ________.
A.have painful experiences B.write down their bad memories
C.have high blood pressure D.recall what they wrote down before
65.What does the writer think of the pill according to the passage?
A.The pill might come with some problems.
B.The pill can stop criminals from committing crimes.
C.The pill should not be taken because of the bad results.
D.The pill can be taken without any worries.

(2021秋·江苏苏州·九年级苏州市振华中学校校考期中)Have you ever heard voices from the universe? What secrets lurk(潜藏)in the signals of pulsars(脉冲星)Y 16, 000 light-years from Earth? Our eyes may not be able to explore these distant mysteries.
China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope(望远镜)(FAST), commonly known as “Sky Eye”, the world’s largest single-aperture(单口径)radio telescope, officially opened to the world on March 31.
The giant telescope is the size of 30 soccer fields. “Before FAST was put into use, China’s radio telescopes usually had a diameter of fewer than 50 meters,” said Wang Qiming, FAST’s chief technologist, “ FAST marks a huge leap(飞跃)forward” Not only is the telescope leading in size, but it’s also leading in terms of sensitivity(敏感度).
FAST is about 2.5 times as sensitive as the second-largest telescope in the world, the Arecibo, Observatory in Puerto Rico, reported Shine, a Shanghai-based media platform. That is to say, if you make a phone call from the moon, it can detect the signal, according to CNR News.
Since its completion in September 2016, it has found more than 300 pulsars(脉冲星)-objects thought to be rapidly rotating neutron(中子)stars that emits(发射)regular pulses(脉冲)of radio waves. To date, FAST has expanded(扩大)four times the volume of the space range that radio telescopes can effectively explore, which means that scientists can discover more unknown cosmic(宇宙的)phenomena(现象), according to Shine.
Experts believe “Sky Eye” will surprise us in the future. “FAST has the potential(潜力)to detect signals from thousands of superior planets. Maybe aliens with much more advanced technologies live there,” Li Di, told China Daily.
“TAST may well be the instrument(仪器)enabling great discoveries, perhaps even discoveries that will earn Nobel or other, significant prizes” Sheldon Glashow, winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, told China Daily. He also has high expectations(期望)for FAST.
Now “Sky Eye” has changed from “China’s eye” to the world’s eye”. About 10 percent of FAST’s observation(观测)time in the first year, roughly 450 hours(分配)to foreign scientists, said Li Di.
“FAST provides astronomical(天文的)capabilities not available anywhere else in the world. Astronomers and physicists who need those capabilities will surely take advantage of China’s generosity in making the tools widely available, Joseph Taylor Jr., told China Daily.
70.What does the article tell us about FAST?
A.It is about 2.5 times as large as Arecibo. B.It can “see” objects 30 million light- years away.
C.It helped Chinese physicists win a Nobel Prize. D.It has been available to foreign scientists since March 31.
71.What has FAST allowed scientists to do?
A.Send pulses of radio waves into the universe. B.Know more about pulsars in the universe.
C.Answer phone calls from the moon. . D.Change the way neutron stars emit pulses.
72.What is the main purpose of the article?
    A.To compare FAST and Arecibo.
    B.To describe how FAST works.
C.To introduce a new way to observe neutron stars.
D.To inform readers of advantages and potential use of FAST.

(2021秋·江苏盐城·九年级景山中学校考期中)Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, we look at two examples.
    Music and Hearing
A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
Musicians hear better, says Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐队). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument (乐器) and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to concentrate on (集中注意力于) certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
    Music and Speaking
Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with patients who have stroke (中风). Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to activate (激活) different parts of the brain, including the damaged parts. This somehow helps patients to use that part of the brain again.
    Understanding the Results
Music improves concentration, memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older. Music, she adds, is not only enjoyable, it’s also good for us in many other ways.
73.What two groups did Nina Kraus study?
    A.Noisy people and quiet people.
    B.Violinists and other musicians.
    C.Musicians and non-musicians.
D.People with hearing problems and people without hearing problems.
74.What does they refer to in Paragraph 3?
    A.Orchestra musicians. B.Instruments. C.The sounds of the orchestra. D.Violinists.
75.How does Gottfried Schlaug help stroke patients speak?
A.By getting them to play an instrument. B.By asking them to sing words.
C.By playing music for them. D.By repeating their names and other information.
76.Which type of improvement is NOT mentioned in the reading?
    A.Memory. B.Sleep. C.Listening skills. D.Language ability.
77.What is the best title of the passage?
A.How to Be a Musician. B.Playing in an Orchestra. C.The Power of Music. D.Trained to Listen.

Virtual reality( 虚拟现实)is a kind of technology that uses computers and programmes to make a movie or game look and feel like it is real. Some people own a virtual reality game system. A number of these systems use cameras. You can also buy a special device (设备)to wear on your head. These devices have sensors(传感器)on them. While you are watching the programme inside the device, these sensors and cameras are watching you. They watch how your head, eyes, and body move. They use this information to move around the pictures you see inside the device.
Some people also use special headphones with the device. The headphones have sensors on them. This information tells the headphones how to change the sound so it seems more real to you. With the special viewing devices and headphones, a player can see and hear a virtual game space more like a real place.
You can also use special clothes that go over your hands and chest to feel like you are in the game. These clothes are filled with sensors. The sensors tell the game how you are moving. (2021秋·江苏无锡·九年级校联考期中)Have you ever heard someone say, “You totally look like you’re a Jessica” or something similar? People see to think that they know what kind of person a “Jessica” or a “Michael” looks like. Why is this?
According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, humans may connect people’s names with their appearance, and can even guess someone’s name based on how they look.
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, collected thousands of photos of people’s faces. They signed each photo with four names. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of the four names was correct.
The volunteers were able to guess the right name 38 percent of the time. It seems that certain characteristics of faces give them something about someone’s name, Reader’s Digest reported.
However, this only worked when the volunteers looked at names from their own culture.
Moreover, the volunteers were not as good at guessing the real names of people who used nicknames more often than their real names. This may show that a person’s appearance is influenced by their name only if they use it often.
This kind of face-name matching happens “because of a process of self-fulfilling prophecy (自我实现预言), as we become what other people expect us to become,” Ruth Mayo from the university told science news website Eurek Alert.
Earlier studies have shown that gender (性别) and race stereotypes (刻板印象) can influence a person’s appearance. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about names. For example, people may think that men named Bob should have rounder faces because the word itself looks round. People would think that women named Rose are beautiful. They expect them to be “beautiful” and “something female”, just like the flowers they are named for.
85.What was the purpose of the study?
A.To find out today’s most popular English names. B.To learn how names influence personality.
C.To find out whether names have something to do with their looks. D.To show how men’s names are different from women’s.
86.What can we infer from the study?
A.Volunteers found it easier to guess nicknames correctly. B.Names have different associations in different cultures.
C.Volunteers could guess the characteristics of those people. D.The people in the photos and volunteers were from the same country.
87.According to Ruth Mayo, why do some people look like their names?
A.They may become what others expect them to become. B.They want to please everyone around them.
C.They don’t want to be different from others. D.They like to copy famous people who share the same name.
88.What point does the last paragraph want to explain?
A.Earlier studies about stereotypes are limited. B.Stereotypes about names can bring good results.
C.Stereotypes about names can influence people’s looks. D.It’s not always bad to be influenced by the expectations of others.

(2021秋·江苏无锡·九年级统考期中)Just like today, ancient Romans’ hairstyles changed according to fashion. All freeborn Roman women grew their hair long as short hair was a sign of slavery, or the state of being a slave. (In fact, slaves, who were owned by someone and had no freedom, worked in all areas of Roman life except public office.) Later on, most women wore their hair smoothed down and tied back. Roman men—both freemen and slaves—usually wore short hair, and were mostly clean-shaven (刮得很干净), except when they were old.
Most Romans were born with dark brown hair, but fashionable people liked yellow hair, because it was unusual. So Roman women often used vinegar to change the colour of their own hair.
And ancient Romans, who loved pale, smooth skin, painted their faces. Just like people today, both women and some men wore lots of makeup. They used chalk powder as face powder and they painted their lips with plant juice, which served the same purpose as modern lipsticks. (The first modern lipsticks were made by a French company at the end of the 19th century.)
Believe it or not. Romans had to pay a terrible price for beauty. Going to the hairdresser’s could be very painful. In Roman times, sharp scissors had not been invented, so hairdressers used shears (tools used for cutting the wool off a sheep) to cut hair and men’s beards. When a smooth, close-shaven look was in fashion hairdressers had to pull men’s beards out by the roots. one hair at a time!
Roman combs were made from bone or wood. Like combs today, they were designed to smooth and keep hair in order, and were sometimes worn to make them look pretty. But they had another, less attractive purpose. They were used for combing out all the little lice(虱子).
89.Who would usually wear long hair in ancient Rome?
    A.Free men. B.Free women. C.Official men. D.Slave women.
90.What did ancient Romans use plant juice for?
    A.Making lipsticks. B.Painting their face.
C.Adding colour to their lips. D.Changing their hair color.
91.How did ancient Romans most probably feel before going to the hairdresser’s?
    A.Excited. B.Angry. C.Calm. D.Nervous.
92.What is the text mainly about?
A.How ancient Romans tried to look good. B.The changes of fashion in ancient Rome.
C.Different ancient Roman hairstyles. D.Why Romans used a lot of makeup.

83.词句猜测题。根据文章第四段空格上文“Many kinds of virtual reality programmes are used to make video games,”及空格下文“ Governments use virtual reality to train some kinds of workers and soldiers.”
故选A。
    85.C 86.B 87.A 88.C

根据文章第五段“However, this only worked when the volunteers looked at names from their own culture”可知,然而,这只有在志愿者从他们自己的文化中查看名字时才有效,推知,姓名在不同文化中有不同的联想,故选B。
87.细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段中的“This kind of face-name matching happens “because of a process of self-fulfilling prophecy (自我实现预言), as we become what other people expect us to become”可知,有些人看起来像他们的名字,是因为他们往往成为别人期望他们成为的人,故选A。
    88.主旨大意题。通读文章最后一段可知,最后一段想解释对名字的刻板印象会影响人们的长相,故选C。
    89.B 90.C 91.D 92.A

    【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要从发型和化妆两方面讲述古罗马人努力如何让自己看起来美丽漂亮。
89.细节理解题。根据文中一段“All freeborn Roman women grew their hair long...”可知所有自由的罗马妇女都留长发。故选B。
90.细节理解题。根据文中第三段内容“They used chalk powder as face powder and they painted their lips with plant juice, which served the same purpose as modern lipsticks”可知古罗马人用植物汁涂嘴唇,就想现代唇膏起的的作用。故选C。
91.推理判断题。根据文中第四段“ Going to the hairdresser’s could be very painful.”
故选A。
