(2022秋·广西南宁·九年级校联考期中)It was a Sunday afternoon, a girl was unhappy. She complained (抱怨) to her father about her hard life. There were so many problems! One problem wasn’t solved but another came. She wanted to give up.
However, her father said nothing, but smiled and took her into the kitchen. He filled three bowls with water. And he put some carrots in the first one. In the second one, he put some eggs. Coffee was put in the third one. Then he boiled ( 煮 ) them. The girl watched her father. Her father just waited without a word.
The girl felt curious and she wondered what her father was doing that for. About 20 minutes later, her father took out the carrots and put them into a bowl. The eggs were put on a plate and the coffee was poured into a cup. Turning back to his daughter slowly, Dad asked, “What do you see?” “Carrots, eggs and coffee.” she answered.
Her father told her to close her eyes and let her touch the carrots. She did and felt the carrots were soft. After that he asked his daughter to take eggs and feel them. The eggs were hard. At last, her father asked her to taste the coffee. The coffee was delicious. “What’s the meaning, Dad?” He explained that each of the things had met with the same unlucky experience—the boiling water, they changed and had different results.
The strong and hard carrots became soft and weak after they were put into the boiling water. The eggs became hard after being cooked. The coffee was very special and it changed the water. “Which one will you choose to be, a carrot, an egg or coffee? That’s up to you to decide.” said her father.

(2022秋·安徽六安·九年级统考期中)Last year I went on holiday to southern Spain with my best friends, Jenny and Alice.
The Spanish people are very warm to visitors. Although I suggest you should know a few simple words in Spanish to communicate with local people, the Spanish people are willing to speak in English. When we arrived, we didn’t know where to find a hotel. I came to an old man and asked him for help politely. With his help, we got to a cheap but wonderful hotel, which even had a swimming pool. There we really enjoyed ourselves.
This year, Jenny is going away with her parents to Greece, so it will be just Alice and me. Alice wants us to go on an adventure (冒险) holiday in Africa. That means we have to go walking in the desert and sleep out in the open. She said it would be better than having a lazy holiday, because we would learn about the world around us and see some wild animals. I’m not sure whether I want to go to Africa. For me, a holiday means relaxing on a beach, not walking all the way. Alice said that we would see elephants and have some amazing experiences. I think she’s bored with lying in the sun all day. (2022秋·广东深圳·九年级校考期中)When I was ten, I worked part-time as a paperboy. Mrs. Stanley was one of my customers. She would watch me coming down her street, and by the time I had biked up to her doorstep, there would be a drink waiting. I would sit and drink while she was talking.
Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband, “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning.” she would say. The first time she said that, juice went up my nose.
I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I should sit and listen and nod and smile, and maybe she would get it out of her system. So that’s what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. (2022秋·广东珠海·九年级校考期中)As teachers, we often love to encourage our students to try new things at a young age. However, I think this is a huge mistake. Learning new things at any age is important and it can help us become better.
Take myself as an example. I didn’t start playing ice hockey until I was more than 40 years old. My son is a huge sports fan and he often asked me to take him to watch games between the big teams. Gradually, I fell in love with the sport, and after a few months, I decided to have a try.
To be honest, it is the hardest sport I’ve ever done. There was so much to learn. In addition to mastering skating skills, I also needed to learn how to pass and shoot. I saw a lot of players get on the ice and pick it up quickly and easily. But I was an exception (例外). I was so terrible at skating but I never thought about giving up. So I took a skating training course, then joined a hockey team and practiced hard in my free time. I finally mastered the skill, though it took me a really long time.
Learning hockey has also helped me be a better teacher in some way. Being bad at hockey helps me to understand those students in my class who have difficulty in learning English. I’m not stupid—it just takes me longer to learn and practice a skill before I’m able to do it. Some students are like that too—they might need to hear an explanation (解释) 3 to 4 times or need a few more days of practice.
It’s good to learn new things, whether they come easily to you or with more difficulty. Maybe you didn’t use the past year to improve yourself or to learn a new skill—but that’s OK! It won’t be late to start anything at any time.
44.The huge mistake in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.
A.learning sports with children B.playing ice hockey at a young age
C.keeping students trying new things D.stopping learning new things because of age
45.What did the author think of ice hockey at first?
A.Easy. B.Boring. C.Difficult. D.Exciting.
46.The author could be a(n) ________ teacher at school.
A.art B.PE C.music D.English
47.According to Paragraphs 3 and 4, what does the author want to tell to the students?
①Practice makes perfect. ②Be patient with yourselves. ③Actions speak louder than words.
A.①② B.①③ C.②③ D.①②③
48.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To explain some rules of playing ice hockey. B.To encourage people to try new things.
C.To call on people to take exercise. D.To teach how to learn English.
