It all started in 2018. While taking a midnight walk, Mahendra came across a very weak dog on the street, whose bones were visible under its skin. Mahendra decided to feed it and for the next couple of days it became the centre of his life, until the night when he found it dead.
After that, Mahendra started providing treatment for all wounded and sick dogs he came across. Some time later, someone told Mahendra about PFA, India’s largest animal welfare organization, chaired by Mrs Maneka Gandhi. Mahendra contacted her and she was impressed by the work he was doing. Mrs Gandhi asked him to start a PFA shelter in Ahmedbad.
Thus, in 2020, he started the shelter. It took a long time for Mahendra to find the land where the shelter could be set up. Along with a team of four doctors and many volunteers, the shelter now has 25 dogs that were unable to walk at all when they were brought in. Today, they’re slowly healing. Dogs that have healed with proper treatment are sent back to where they came from if the environment there is safe. However, the shelter will be home to the blind dogs for all their lives, says Mahendra.
The shelter runs on money coming from Mahendra’s own pension of $ 45,000. There have been some financial crunches now and then, but Mahendra is determined that no matter what challenge comes his way, he’ll fight through.

Since the beginning of the summer in 2022, China has been sweltering under the worst heatwave in decades. A number of people in Zhejiang, Henan, Jiangsu and Sichuan provinces were diagnosed with thermoplegia (热射病), the most severe form of heatstroke, and some even died of this disease.
In a warming world, the hazards of heatwaves are increasing. According to a study, the number of deaths caused by heatwaves in China has increased rapidly since 1979, from 3,679 persons per year in the 1980s to 15, 500 persons per year in the 2010s.
High temperatures would accelerate the loss in soil moisture (水分) and hurt the growth of corn, cotton, trees and fruits. What’s more, each additional degree of warming will increase crop losses to insects by 10-25 percent, threatening food security for billions of people.
China has witnessed a range of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall, flooding, tornadoes and record heatwaves this year. Meteorological officials said the country had an average temperature of 21.3 degrees Celsius in June, 0.9 degrees Celsius higher than the same period on average, and the highest record for the same period since 1961.
Experts say that while extreme summer heat is not entirely new, these sorts of occurrences could be something that becomes a standard part of life, requiring people to start learning how to cope with heatwaves that may continue for the rest of summer and well into the future.
Remember that even healthy, young athletes can be harmed by extreme heat, so every activity, indoors or outdoors, should be evaluated when extreme heat hits. There are some ways to stay safe during extreme heat events, such as drinking plenty of water, looking for shade or remaining in shade when outside, and avoiding cooking large meals that can add heat to your indoor environment.
48. Why does the writer mention the cases in the four provinces in China?
A. To introduce the four provinces. B. To show the rising growth of population.
C. To identify the impact of the worst heat wave. D. To offer the accurate data for the thermoplegia.
49. What dos the underlined word “hazards” in paragraphs probably mean?
A. Panics. B. Dangers. C. Outcomes. D. Expenses.
50. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Rural areas suffer more from heat waves than cities.
B. China has witnessed the worst climate ever in 2022.
C. Climate change results in the decline in insect species.
D. High temperatures have negative effects on agriculture.
51. What does the writer want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Ways to deal with extreme heat. B. The tendency of heat waves in the future.
C. Effects of global warming on the environment. D. The significance of keeping healthy in summer.

Japan's biggest airline is betting that the future of travel isn't traveling at all. For the last month, a married couple has been interacting with a robot—called an Avatar—that's controlled by their daughter hundreds of miles away. Made by ANA Holdings Inc., it looks like a vacuum cleaner with an iPad attached. But the screen displays the daughter's face as they chat, and its wheels let her move about the house as though she's really there.
“Virtual travel” is nothing new,of course.Storytellers, travel writers and artists have been stimulating the senses of armchair tourists for centuries. It's only in recent decades that frequent, safe travel has become available to the non- wealthy.
Yet even as the world's middle classes climb out of the armchair and into economy-class seat, there are signs of a post-travel society emerging. Concerns about environmental sustainability cause loss to airlines which release much carbon. And the aging of abundant societies is both restricting physical travel and creating demand for alternative ways to experience the world. For the travel industry, virtual reality offers an attractive response to these trends.
Of course, new technologies encourage far-out claims. ANA doesn't plan to start selling Avatars until next year. Profits, too, will probably be difficult to make: By one estimate, the global market for this kind of technology will be worth only about $300 million by 2023. By contrast, ANA's traditional travel business brought in more than $19 billion last year.
But if the business value for virtual vacations is still weak, the market for technologies that bridge physical distances between families and coworkers seems likely to only expand. ANA's robots may not replace its airplanes any time soon, but they ll almost certainly be a part of travel's high-tech future.
52. Why does the author use the example of a couple interacting with a robot?
A. To show the Japanese are crazy about travel.
B. To indicate virtual travel begins to enter people's real life.
C. To show the couple are very enthusiastic over robots.
D. To express the close relationship between the couple and their daughter.
53. Which of the following is the possible reason for virtual travel's appearance?
A. Storytellers, travel writers and artists have been using it for centuries.
B. Frequent and safe travel has become available to the ordinary people.
C. People are worried about the air pollution caused by airlines.
D. More and more people lose interest in travel.
54. What can we learn about Avatars from the last two paragraphs?
A. They will be put on the market soon.
B. They will bring ANA a lot of money,
C. They will replace ANA's airplanes soon.
D. They are almost unavoidable in travel's future.
55. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Your Next Travel May Be Virtual
B. Easy Travel in the Future
C. Virtual Travel Benefits
D. Air Travel Disappearing

I quickly got dressing and ran out of the bathroom, only find a big fire on the third floor of our flat building. Luckily, most of the people, including my family, have left the building by the time the firefighters arrived. But a baby along with his parents were still trapped in a flat on a fourth floor. The firemen were true great. Some put out the fire but the others managed to rescue the parents and their baby. We are really grateful to the brave firefighters who risked their own lives to save ourselves.
