    A

Don’t ignore the difference teenagers can make.

    John Michael Thomas, 14, Florida

When John Michael Thomas decided to honor his friend and classmate Elizabeth Buckley, who died from cancer, he remembered how much she loved peacocks (孔雀).

He wanted to build a life-sized peacock fountain in Elizabeth’s favorite park in the city. He thought it could be a place for people to relax and be inspired.

John Michael raised $52,000 to build the fountain.

    Barrett England, 13, Utah

The wheels began to turn for Barrett England when he heard about Karma Bike shop, a place where young people can earn free bikes by reading and performing community service.

Barrett visited Karma’s owner with his idea: He would collect and repair used bikes and donate them to the shop.

He expected to get about 10 donated bikes. In the end, Barrett received 39.

    Zachary Blohm, 15, Wisconsin

The 25-year-old playground at an elementary school near Milwaukee, Wis. was so small that only 70 of its 575 students could play on it at a time.

That’s when Zachary Blohm saved the day. He and some volunteers wanted to build a huge playground. To raise money, Zac planned T-shirt and bake sales, sold tickets and more. He held monthly money-raising events for more than a year. Overall, he collected $130,000—enough to finish his project.

    Jack Zimmerman, 16, New Jersey

For some people, finding a meal is as simple as opening the refrigerator. For more than 366,000 hungry kids in New Jersey, it’s not that easy.

That fact didn’t sit well with Jack Zimmerman, who organized a drive to lessen childhood hunger in his state. His goal: create 40,000 packaged meals that could be donated to those in need.

On game day, Jack and his volunteers started their work. After the final count, the team had packaged 47,124 meals — well above Jack’s goal.

    B

The other day I was doing some shopping and a homeless man, who was untidy and spent most of the time talking to no one, walked toward a group of us at the checkout stand. I overheard him say to the man in front of me, “I don’t want to steal from this store... would you buy me some food?”

The man in front of me pretended not to hear him; it was as if he were not there. I waited patiently for my turn to be questioned, but it never came. So I asked him, “Can I buy you something to eat?” He gladly accepted. The man got a bag and began putting cupcakes in the bag. As my things were being rung up I watched the man put the cupcakes into the bag; 1, 2, 3... He finally stopped and I asked him how many he had got and he replied 6.

The cashier looked at me in surprise and then added them to my order. After I was through, the man was walking around the store; he said he wanted something to drink, too. The cashier seemed to be keeping a close eye on him. I admit I was too, as I didn’t want him to steal anything either! I told the cashier that if he got a drink I’d just pay for it.

In the end, we both ended up leaving the store, but he stood right outside holding the cupcakes and talking to himself. Or maybe he was talking with someone who he thought was there.

This man’s circumstances (处境) made me sad. How many of our homeless also suffer from a mental illness? Maybe that’s even what led him to be homeless. I also thought about the watchful eye the cashier and I kept over him. Maybe for different reasons, I still hope to run into him again someday, and maybe we can sit down and have lunch together.

    4. What did the other man do when asked by the homeless man?

    A. He gave him some money for food. B. He walked him to the checkout stand.

C He did not react to his request at all. D. He offered to buy him some cupcakes.

    5. Why did the cashier keep a close eye on the homeless man?

    A. Because he doubted if a theft might happen.

    B. Because he thought the man might need help.

    C. Because it was his duty to watch the customers.

    D. Because it helped speed up the check-out process.

    6. What did the homeless man do after leaving the store?

    A. He thanked the author. B. He spoke to himself

    C. He talked with someone. D. He ate the cupcakes.

    7. Which of the following can best describe the author?

    A. Positive. B. Honest. C. Caring. D. Responsible.

    C

On my first round-the-world trip in 2006, I planned everything out in advance. I knew where I was going, staying for how long, and how 1 would get there. And then half-way through I ditched the plan and went with the flow(随大流). Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I’m a last-minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.

Traveling without a plan gives you great flexibility (灵活性). Since nothing is booked far in advance, you can turn to something different when you change your mind or something better comes along. I changed my plans to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn’t have had that experience if I had kept to my planned schedule.

However, most new travelers are the opposite — they overplant their trips. Their whole journey is scheduled. Two days here, three days there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, you want to see as much as possible. You don’t want to waste a single second.

Actually, it is better to slow down your pace. Spending more time in one place allows you to get a better feel for the rhythm of life. You can visit at a more relaxed pace, see more than just the attractions, and open up your schedule to the happy accidents of travel.

When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was unrealistic, and revised my plan. I came up with a list of one or two things I want to see each day and spaced everything out. It’s an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels unfold from there. This way you are never locked into a certain place if your feelings change.

Researchers have found that short and intense stair climbing, which can be done almost anywhere, has great benefits for fitness.

The findings make the two most common excuses of couch potatoes untrue: no time and no access to the gym. “Stair climbing is a form of exercise anyone can do in their own home, after work or during the lunch hour,” says Martin, a lead author of the study. “This research takes interval (间歇) training out of the lab and makes it possible for everyone.”

Early studies have shown the benefits of stair climbing over continuous periods of time, up to 70 minutes a week, but researchers wanted to determine if interval training, which includes short and intense exercise separated by short periods of recovery, was a good way to improve heart fitness. Researchers recruited 31 women and tested the effect of two different experiments; each required a 10-minute exercise period, including warm-up, cool-down and recovery. The exercise periods were done three times a week over the course of six weeks.

The first experiment included three 20-second of continuous climbing in an “all-out” manner. The participants were then compared to those who went through the same experiment using an exercise bike which has already been shown to improve fitness.

For the second experiment, some women climbed up and down one flight of stairs for 60 seconds, an experiment which could be easily done at home.

Both experiments, each including a total time of 30 minutes a week, increased heart fitness, an important healthy marker that is connected with long life.

12 What does Martin say about stair climbing?

    A. It saves lots of time. B. It is convenient to do.

    C. It requires special training. D. It is better than going to the gym.

    13. Why did researchers do the two experiments?

    A. To test the results of early studies.

    B. To encourage people to climb stairs.

    C. To prove the benefits of continuous stair climbing.

    D. To find out effect of interval training on heart fitness.

14 What can we learn from the two experiments?

    A. The first one was better for fitness. B. The second one required less total time.

    C. Both of them were good for heart health. D. People in the second one turned out healthier.

    15. What is the best title for the text?

    A. How Stair Climbing Benefits People.

    B. Why Stair Climbing Is the Best Exercise.

    C. Stair Climbing—A Good Way to Increase Fitness.

    D. Simple Stair Climbing Exercises You Can Do at Home.

    47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!

My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (脚踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.

After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there. The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an capable person as my dad. We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.
