As a student, if you’re considering getting a part-time job to earn pocket money during summer or winter vacations, here are some of the good choices.

    Tutor

If you’re particularly good at a subject, you might be able to get paid for helping younger students get better grades. In many cases, it’s possible to make $15 to $20 an hour. Plus, with this job, you’re able to flexibly set your own schedule. It’s a good way for students to both earn money and take part in after-class activities.

    Dog Walker

As more people are becoming pet owners, the need for people to provide care services for such animals increases. Better yet, the pay is on the higher side, with dog walkers making as much as $30 for a 30-minute walk. If you are an animal lover, a job as a dog walker is suitable for you.

    Babysitter

Depending on how many kids you look after, you might be able to make $12 to $15 an hour for each kid. To get more work chances, get a first aid certificate(急救证书). Some community centers offer babysitting courses, and you can charge higher prices if you have such kind of certificate. With a driver’s license, you will be more competitive. But this is not necessary.

    Lifeguard

If you’re a good swimmer, lifeguard can be one of the great part-time jobs available for you. At the beginner level, you might only make $9 to $10 an hour. Once you become more experienced, you could make up to $15 to $16 per hour. If you can be a lifeguard for more than a year or two, the increased money can be very satisfactory.

    1. What is a must to be a tutor?

    A. Joining in activities after class. B. Attending community courses.

    C. Getting excellent subject grades. D. Being experienced at swimming.

    2. What advantage should you have when you apply to be a babysitter?

An 89-year-old man from the American state of Rhode Island has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward and nearly a lifetime thinking about. He earned his Ph, D. and became a physicist.

Manfred Steiner successfully passed his paper recently at Brown University in Providence. Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted, and because he overcame health problems that could have affected his studies to get it.

As a young person in Vienna, Austria, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein. But after World War I, his mother and uncle told him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree in 1955 and moved to the United States soon after. In America, he had a wonderful career studying blood. Then he became a full professor and led the hematology (血液学) department at Brown’s medical school from 1985 to 1994. Steiner helped set up, a research program in hematology at the University of North Carolina. He directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000 and returned to Rhode Island.

Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes. He was planning to just take a few classes that interested him. But by 2007, he had managed to join the doctoral program.

Physics professor Brad Marston was surprised when Steiner entered his class. But the professor soon realized how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. “He has written many papers in medical science, more papers than I’ve written in physics. He already had a scientific way of thinking that younger students have to develop,” Marston said. Steiner now hopes to help the professors he befriended during his studies with their research.

    4. What happened to Steiner on his way to get a Ph, D. in physics?

    A. He left the United States.

    B. He began to dislike medicine.

    C. His physical condition was bad.

    D. He was always supported by his mother.

    5. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Steiner?

    A. His interesting classes.

    B. His career in medicine.

    C. His effort to become a physicist.

    D. His childhood experiences in Austria.

    6. What is Marston’s attitude to Steiner’s study of physics?

    A. Opposed. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Impatient.

    7. Which word can best describe Steiner?

    A. Odd. B. Ashamed. C. Athletic. D. Hardworking.

    C

Science experiments don’t always go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from them. Recently, Australian scientists learned something unexpected about magpies(喜鹊) when they tried to put trackers(跟踪仪) on them to learn more about their habits.

The birds the scientists hoped to study were Australian magpies. They are known to be quite clever. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to protect the area they live in.

The researchers wished to try a new tracker on the magpies. They hoped to learn more about how far the birds fly and what they do during a normal day. The scientists are concerned that magpies may have a hard time adjusting(适应) to the environment as the world warms up because of climate(气候) change.

To keep the trackers on the birds without causing flying problems, the researchers developed a special harness, by which they can fix trackers to magpies. It was tough, so it wouldn’t come off by accident.

There was just one problem — the birds didn’t like the trackers. The researchers placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. But just ten minutes after setting up the last magpie, they noticed something unusual: An adult female magpie was helping another magpie get free from its harness.

In a few hours, most of the other magpies had also been freed from their harnesses. By the third day, none of the birds had trackers anymore. “The birds are much cleverer than we thought,” said Dominique Potvin, one of the scientists.

The scientists were disappointed about the trackers, but they realized that the magpies had taught them something else: Magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird who is helping gets nothing from others.

This is called “rescue behavior”, and it’s not that common in the animal world, especially among birds. The researchers are glad they’ve learned about the rescue behavior of magpies. But now they need to think about a good way to track these clever birds.

    12. Why did scientists fix trackers to magpies?

    A. To improve the trackers.

    B. To know of magpies’ habits.

    C. To test the use for the trackers.

    D. To find out the magpie’s population.

    13. What are scientists worried about in paragraph 3?

    A. The little food for magpies.

    B. Magpies’ long distance flying.

    C. The damage caused by climate change.

    D. Magpies having trouble getting used to climate change.

    14. What can we learn about magpies from the last two paragraphs?

    A. They will have little room to live in.

    B. They offer each other help willingly.

    C. They just want to be praised for their behavior.

    D. They are the most clever animals in the world.

    15. Which can be the best title for the text?

    A. Magpies Teach Scientists An Unexpected Lesson

    B. Climate Change Makes Magpies More Difficult

    C. The Trackers Help Magpies Get Used To Nature

    D. Magpies Are Adjusting To The Trackers On Their Bodies

Davey got up early in the morning and couldn’t wait to look out of the window. To his great disappointment, it was snowing heavily outside. Usually he would look forward to watching snow, but today he was not. It was Christmas Eve, and because of the snowstorm, Davey was worried that his cousin Josh would be stuck in the road and couldn’t make it to his home for Christmas from a neighboring city.

“We haven’t seen each other for half a year, and I have got a special present for him!” Davey said to himself. “How I wish he could get here!” Davey turned away from the window with a sigh (叹气).

In the afternoon, Davey and his parents drove to the town to buy a Christmas tree. When they finished shopping and were about to leave the store, Davey saw a crowd of people outside. He ran to get a closer look. It was Santa Claus (圣诞老人)! Children were waiting in line to express their wishes to him. “Can I get in line, please Dad?” asked Davey. “Well, we’re kind of in a hurry,” said his dad. “But since this is Santa Claus, I guess we can spare the time.”

Davey gave his dad a big thank-you hug and ran to the line. When it was finally his turn, Davey climbed up on Santa’s lap. Santa asked, “Well, what would you like for Christmas?”

“I wish my cousin Josh could get home for Christmas,” Davey said. “But the snow is so deep that Mom and Dad don’t think he can make it.” Having known from the weather forecast(预报) that it would clear up with the snow stopping in the late afternoon, Santa Claus said, “I don’t usually deliver people on Christmas Eve, but I’ll tell you what to do. Tonight, before you go to sleep, make your wish on the biggest, brightest star in the sky. That’s the Wishing Star and it might hear your heart.”

    注意:
