On Nvember 14, 2016, the Kaikura earthquake struck New Zealand’s Suth Island, causing a destructive tsunami. Under the surface, the earthquake caused strng currents that swept away and mstly killed ff diverse ecsystems f creatures living alng the Kaikura underwater canyn.
As a result, whales had t dive deeper and lnger t find fd—“a majr shift” in their behavir, says c-authr Liz Slten, a marine bilgist at the University f Otag in New Zealand.
The impact earthquakes have n land animals has been well dcumented, but scientists knw relatively little abut what happens underwater. Such research is imprtant fr gvernment agencies, which may need t take recent earthquakes int cnsideratin when cnsidering fishing qutas (限额), ntes Rchelle Cnstantine, a marine mammal eclgist at the University f Auckland.
The canyn’s upper reaches are rich in creatures, supplying fd fr the fish that make up the whales’ diet. S when these smaller life frms were washed away, it had “severe cnsequences fr the cmmunity arund there”, says study c-authr Will Rayment, “That effect flwed all the way thrugh the fd chain.”
As part f their nging study, the scientists were tracking 42 individual whales. After the earthquake, in all, the team managed t recrd data n 40 whales, shwing that the abundance f whales in the general area didn’t change after the earthquake. Hwever, the whales changed hw they used their habitat.
A year after the earthquake, the researchers bserved the whales returning t their previus surface-breathing intervals. Fr decades, quantum, cmputing has been little mre than a labratry curisity. Nw, big tech cmpanies have invested in quantum cmputing, as have many smaller nes. Accrding t Business Weekly, quantum machines culd help us “cure cancer, and even take steps t turn climate change in the ppsite directin.” This is the srt f hype (炒作) that annys Jhnsn. He wrries that researchers are making prmises they can’t keep. “What’s new,” Jhnsn wrte, “is that millins f dllars are nw ptentially available t quantum cmputing researchers.”
