In what is believed t be a wrld first, University f Suth Australia researchers have designed a self-sufficient slar-driven system that evaprates (蒸发) seawater and recycles it int freshwater, grwing crps withut any human interventin. Prfessr Halan Xu and Dr Gary Owens frm UniSA’s Future Industries Institute have develped the vertical (垂直的) flating sea farm which cnsists f tw parts: an upper layer rm similar t a glasshuse and a lwer water harvest rm.
“In this case, clean water is supplied by a line f slar evapratrs that absrb the seawater, trap the salts in the evapratr bdy and, under the sun’s rays, release clean water vapur (a) int the air which is then cncentrated n water belts and transprted t the upper plant grwth part.” Dr Owens said.
The system, which is pwered nly by slar light, has several advantages ver ther slar sea farm designs currently being trialled, accrding t Prfessr Xu. “Other designs have build evapratrs inside the grwth rm which takes up valuable space that culd therwise be used fr plant grwth. Als, these systems are very likely t suffer frm verheating and crp death,” Prfessr Xu says.

Hwever, in Japan, there is a mealtime custm f waiting until everyne has been served befre anyne digs in.
Because f this difference in nrms, the researchers assumed that Japanese children wuld wait lnger in the marshmallw test than the American children. This is exactly what they fund. The researchers did a clever fllw-up experiment. They fund ne field where children in the U.S. are accustmed t waiting lnger than Japanese children are: Opening presents. In the U.S., gifts are usually given n special ccasins, such as birthdays and Christmas. On these ccasins, children usually have t wait befre they can pen their presents. In Japan, hwever, gift-giving happens mre ften, and children usually pen presents immediately.
Given these cultural differences, Yanaka expected that if they ran the marshmallw test with Japanese and American kids, but they replaced marshmallws with packaged gifts, then American kids wuld wait lnger t pen them.
