Two years ago, a blind person, Jorge Spielmann started the Blind Cow in the city of Zurich, Switzerland. Almost all the people who worked there, as the restaurant was named, were also blind. Now, not just the blind, but even people who can see with their eyes gather together in groups to this restaurant for the special experience it provides, apart from the good food it offers. The restaurant is so popular that all the tables are always booked ahead of time.
The idea came to Spielmann while he was working as bartender (酒保) in 1998 at a public exhibit, where people with normal sight walked through completely dark passages by feeling with hands together along with blind people. Then Spielmann changed an unused house into a 60-seat restaurant.
The Blind Cow enables customers who can see to “see” a different world through the eyes of people with no sight. Besides, as no one can see what the others are doing, something like these is common: People put fingers into the meat, the wrong forks are used and people even wipe their mouths on their sleeves (袖子) instead of napkins!
Before entering the dining area, the customers are told the rules of the restaurant: no walking around, no smoking and no flashlights. When arriving, the customers are led in by a waitress with bells tied to her toes. Forming a chain led by the waitress, with hands placed on each others shoulders, the customers walk inside. When the customers want something, they shout to catch the attention of the waitresses.
The bells on the waitresses’ toes help prevent them from bumping (撞) into each other while carrying dishes. Though they admit to some unavoidable bumps, the workers at the Blind Cow say that they don’t have more broken things than any other restaurant. Customers to the restaurant are extra careful not to knock things over.
17.Why do many people with normal sight come to the Blind Cow?
A.To remember the past memories. B.To show their hidden feelings.
C.To have a taste of the good dishes. D.To go through something different.
18.What may the customers ignore at the Blind Cow?

20.What’s the best title of the text?

While video games used to be considered harmful to young people, various studies have also proved the positive effects of computer games, especially action video games.
Angela Pasqualotto from the University of Trento and her team have now tested whether such video games can help primary school children learn to read. They’ve developed such a computer game called Skies of Manawak.
“Reading involves many important skills, including knowing how to move our eyes on the page or how to use our working memory to connect words into a meaningful sentence,” explains Pasqualotto. “It’s known that action video games improve these still, such as vision, general attention, working memory and cognitive (认知的) flexibility.”
For their study, the researchers tested 150 school children between the ages of eight and twelve. Half of them played the game Skies of Manawak two hours a week for six weeks. The other half, the control group, received the educational game Scratch, which is intended to teach children the basics of programming. Both games are basically to train the executive (执行的) functions of the brain.
“We started by examining the children’s ability to read words, non-words and paragraphs and their attention control,” explains Pasqualotto. “After six weeks, these skills were tested again.”
“We found a seven-fold improvement in attention control in the children who played our action video game compared to the control group,” said Pasqualotto. The team also saw significant improvements in reading speed and accuracy among Skies of Manawak players—there were no improvements in the kids who played Scratch. It’s also worth mentioning that the children’s reading skills have improved, although the game itself doesn’t contain any reading exercises.
“For the study, we also carried out three further evaluation tests six, twelve and eighteen months after the training. Each time, the trained children performed better than the control group,” adds Pasqualotto.
Of course, while the study suggests some benefit in action video games, it does not mean that one must do nothing else.

A.Its influence on reading skills is not temporary. B.The study results about it seem to be untrustworthy.
C.Reading ability can’t be improved with its assistance. D.Kids need consistent reading training after playing it.
31.What is the author’s opinion on action video games?
A.They have nothing to do with reading. B.People shouldn’t get addicted to them.
C.School kids are supposed to avoid them. D.They should be replaced with Scratch.

I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My granddad was the one who taught me, and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what to do, and just about everything went wrong. My granddad told me to just put my feet on the pedals (脚蹬子) and start pedaling. He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn’t.
As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let it go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from pedaling, and I just wanted to get off. I forgot how to use the brakes and fell right off the bike. My granddad kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.
As soon as I started pedaling again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. Since that happened, my granddad decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning, I woke up bright and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn’t that afraid of falling anymore.

The first thing that Valoy saw when she put on color-blind corrective glasses was the green grass and later, the red flowers. Valoy says it's unbelievable and she has struggled with certain topics, especially the painting class in school and she would even paint the ocean purple before that.
Valoy wasn't diagnosed with red-green color blindness until the fourth grade. “For the past 17 years, I've lived in a ‘black and white movie’,” the recent Louis E. Dieruff High School graduate says. But not anymore. The transformative moment all started with a public speaking class Valoy took. After she made an informative speech about growing up with her color deficiency(缺陷), her teacher, Sandy Kile, was inspired to teach the class a more important life lesson.
Kile made a suggestion that the class should reach out to companies that produced corrective glasses to see if they would donate a pair to Valoy. While Kile encouraged Valoy to write a description of living in a world with mostly shades of grey and brown, her classmates wrote statements about why she needed the glasses. “I didn't expect much for that,” Valoy says. “Professor Kile truly believed it was going to happen but we were not sure.”
It wasn't so surprising when the first company turned down their request. Then, the class received reply from the founder of Pilestone Inc., offering Valoy and six other community members his glasses for free.
Valoy is thankful to Kile and her classmates. But Kile says that she is very glad the students have the chance to realize the significance of lending a hand to those in need, and that being able to aid Valoy in changing her life is something she will never forget the rest of her life.

A new study suggests some of America’s favorite Independence Day fireworks can give out lead and copper (铜), which are used to give fireworks their vivid colors, and also damage human cells and animal lungs.
Led by researchers at NYU, the study showed poisonous levels of lead in the fireworks. Experiments showed that lung exposure to particle emissions (颗粒排放物) from five types of fireworks significantly increased oxidation (氧化), a chemical process in the body that can damage or even kill cells.
The researchers say the new study is believed to be the first to examine the effects of firework exposure in human cells and living animals, and to test for particles of common firework metals thrown into the atmosphere.
“While many are careful to protect themselves from injury from explosions, our results suggest that inhaling firework smoke may cause, longer-term physical damage, a risk that has been largely ignored,” says study senior author Terry Gordon, a professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine.
Gordon and his team also analyzed 14 air quality samples taken at dozens of sites across the US throughout each year. They found that levels of poisonous metals were higher in samples taken on Independence Day and New Year’s Eve celebrations than at any other time of the year. Along with lead, copper and other poisonous metals are commonly found in fireworks. “Our research shows that although we are only exposed to these poisonous substances for a short time each year, they are much more poisonous than the pollutants we breathe every day,” says Gordon.
Gordon cautions (警告) that the current investigation is the first step, only addressing the potential effects of one-time exposure to the firework metals. He says repeated exposure is likely a larger concern. Nevertheless, he is planning to share his findings with local health officials, firework producers, the Environmental Protection Agent, and other regulatory agents to alert them to the potential for harm.
