My mom is about to have a spinal (脊柱的) operation. The operation is 41 minor, but does carry a risk of paralysis (瘫痪). Friends and family have reacted to this news by talking in such pessimistic terms that Mom has come to 42 this kind of talk as “psychological theft”. It occurs when other people increase your anxiety 43 providing comfort.
Last week Mom ran into Geoff who works for the local school. “How are you?” he asked. “Not great,” she replied, “I have been having some trouble with my back and I’m going to need an operation.” “Oh, the back is the most 44 place to operate on! My mom had that and she was in terrible pain.” He responded. Geoff’s 45 had been kind. He’d given his own mother’s story to show sympathy, 46 Mom only heard danger and pain.
People could have alternative things that would be equally true, but more familiar to patients. “The specialists in our hospitals are among the best in the world.”—That’s a good one. “You’re going to feel much better 47 .”—That’s another.
I’m not suggesting patients should be 48 from the reality of the risks they’re taking. But if the decision to have an operation can’t really be 49 , what’s the purpose of stressing the 50 ? It’s just common sense to say, “Get well soon, and how can I help?”

There Is No Ping without A Pong
In February 2020, my husband, Bob, and I were offered an outdoor pingpong table, but I was not good at pingpong at all. “ What are we going to do with that?” Bob asked me. He clearly thought we were about to get something we did not 51 .
“The two of us will play. ” I replied. Bob looked doubtful.
The pingpong table arrived 52 before the COVID-19 quarantines (隔离) began. We were both working at home. Every day at a little after 5, if it wasn’t rainy, we played pingpong for about 45 minutes, driving away the anxiety or 53 of another day in lockdown.
I lost every game. It didn’t 54 me at first. Bob was enjoying the chance to 55 . But there were days when I hated losing. Once I threw my paddle across the yard in anger. Then one day Bob suggested I play with a handicap (让步赛) of 12 points. That 56 a lot — I sometimes won! The effort of trying to win was 57 . Even when I lost a point, I enjoyed making Bob work harder for it.
Pingpong helped my husband and me 58 the worst of the lockdowns. The gift of the pingpong table gave us a way to have fun in a 59 time. It takes two willing partners to play table tennis. As a child, I was truly afraid of the dark and of getting lost; these fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my familiar room at night that 71 me so much. There was never total 72 , but a streetlight or passing car lights made clothes hung over a chair take on the 73 of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains seem to move when there was no wind. A tiny sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the daylight. My 74 would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would 75 very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, 76 on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home — that was no problem. After school though, when all the buses were 77 up along the street, I was afraid that I’d get on the wrong one and be taken to some unfamiliar neighborhood. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or 78 by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a 79 one.

When I was in third grade, my family moved from a house in the countryside to a house in town. My parents sold the first house before they bought the second, so we were 81 for three months.
