It was an ordinary summer afternoon when I first found out about my grandpa’s 1 garden.
That day, after school, instead of walking straight home, I decided to visit my grandpa, who lived just a few blocks away.
When I got there, I saw the front door was slightly open. I pushed it open but found nobody. Curiosity and 2 mixed within me as I ventured inside and noticed the backdoor wide open, leading to a path I’d never 3 before. There it was—a breathtaking garden, filled with flowers of all shapes and colors, greenery stretching out as far as my eyes could see. I walked 4 , marveling at the beautiful spectacle. Suddenly, I heard a rustling sound from a nearby bush, followed by a soft and familiar voice.
“I didn’t 5 you to find this place, my dear,” my grandpa said, emerging from behind the green leaves with a broad smile, holding a watering can.
6 by the beauty of the garden, I just stood there, taking in the view. After what felt like forever, I asked, “Grandpa, why didn’t you tell me about this place?”
He shrugged and replied, “I wanted it to be a 7 , something you could discover on your own. It’s more special that way, don’t you think?”
Since that day, we would spend hours in the garden, tending to the flowers, sharing stories, and enjoying each other’s 8 . That garden, which I discovered 9 , became our playground, a haven of peace in the midst of our bustling city lives.
Looking back now, I realize that the greatest thing I found in that garden was not the beautiful scenery, but the precious memories and 10 I built with my grandpa.

Maria’s Plans
Maria stared thoughtfully at the tree fort. It was the first thing her grandpa had built for her. She had been little — it was before her younger brothers had been born.
Of all her brothers, Maria felt that she was most like her grandpa. Grandpa had been a carpenter. Maria had always loved visiting him in his workshop. Only she had been allowed because she was the oldest. He could do anything with his own two hands, she thought 11 .
Recently, Maria had decided that she was going to build a tree swing. Now she was standing 12 the tree, with her rope, seat, and tools, thinking about the best way to 13 the swing. She could throw the ropes 14 the branch. But then how would she tie the knot? She would probably need to 15 a ladder.
“Hey, what’re you doing?” called a voice from a little distance away. Maria turned and saw her little brother Ricardo ran up to her. “None of your business,” she replied. Then, thinking better of it, she said, “ 16 a swing.”
“Really? Can I help?” Ricardo asked. Maria thought it over — it would be nice to have some help. But she was the builder in the family now, so she would have to solve her own problems. “No,” Maria said. “I don’t need any help.”
Suddenly, her other brother, Emil, came running towards them. “Hey, what’re you guys doing?”
“We’re building a swing,” Ricardo said.
“No, we’re not,” Maria said. “I am!”
“Can I help?” Emil asked. “No!” Maria was turning red. “This is my project. Not yours. You 17 even knew Grandpa.” She ran into the house, leaving Ricardo, Emil, and her materials beneath the tree.
“What’s wrong, Maria?” Grandma asked.
“Ricardo and Emil are bothering me,” Maria explained the situation.
“They’re just trying to help. And how are you going to do it all by yourself?”
“Grandpa didn’t need anyone’s help,” Maria said.
“Who do you think helped him cut the boards for your tree fort?”
Grandma asked. Maria was 18 . “But I don’t remember...”
“Maria, Grandpa was a great carpenter, but even great carpenters need help sometimes. 19 he needed a second pair of hands, he’d ask me to help.” Grandma glanced out the window. “And it looked like you need help, too.”
Maria hurried outside. Ricardo and Emil were carrying the ladder in the yard, waving at Maria. Smiling, she began to wonder if she might not be the only one to 20 Grandpa.

As a teenager, I was pretty lazy when it came to doing things for my family. I found myself regularly resisting the urge to help out at home with even the simplest things.
Every Wednesday afternoon, for example, my mother drove me to another town for a piano lesson. During my two-hour lesson, she’d 31 to the nearby store and buy a week’s worth of groceries. Given the fact that my mom had driven me twelve miles there, twelve miles back, 32 for my lesson, and bought me a candy bar, you’d think I’d be very 33 to help her bring the groceries into the house. But I wasn’t. I generally just brought in an armload and left the 34 for Mom as I ran to my room, shut the door, and started studying.
Don’t get me wrong: even back in my room, I felt 35 about not helping my mother more. Deep inside, I wanted to change my way. But I also realized that 36 I took on more responsibility, my parents would start 37 more of me. At age fifteen, I sensed that this one small change would mark something much bigger: my personal change from a cared-for, spoiled child to a more 38 , caring and giving young man.
I’ll never forget the Wednesday when I made a decision to jump in and see what happened. Returning home from the lesson, I disappeared into my room, as usual. But once inside, I felt that deep and burning 39 . Throwing my school books on the bed, I suddenly opened my door and headed back to the garage to help my mother.
How happy I felt that day!
The neat thing was, the more I helped out, the better I felt about myself and my place in my family. As Mom and Dad realized they could 40 on me more, our trips became far less stressful, too. In short, it was a win-win situation for everyone.
Sometimes the little things we put off doing the longest turn out to be the simplest things to complete. And feeling happy beats feeling guilty any day.
