In mammals, lud calls usually serve as alarm signals that warn fellw species f an enemy r ther danger. On the ther hand, screams frm humans can have very different meanings, as Swiss researchers nw reprt in the jurnal“PLS Bilgy”. Human’s screams are nt always nly assciated with negative emtins such as fear, pain, anger and grief, but als psitive emtins such as jy and pleasure.
Sascha Frihhlz and his clleagues frm the University f Zurichstudied hw many types f human screams there are, hw accurately test subjects can distinguish them, and which brain regins are invlved(参与)in prcessing such sund signals. T d this, they first made sund recrdings f different screams. Twelve men and wmen were t put themselves in situatins where they reacted with a brief scream. The predetermined situatins included, fr example: an attack by an armed stranger, celebratin abut a sprting victry f their favrite team, the threat f an ppnent.
Frm the recrdings, the researchers finally selected 420 screams. Frm this, they identified six distinct categries f screams, including three f alarming characters (cries f pain, anger, and fear) and three nn-alarming screams ( as expressins f great pleasure, extreme jy, and desperate sadness). Cntrary t all expectatins, the subjects reacted t nn-alarming screams mre quickly and recgnized the emtin expressed with it mre reliably than with alarming screams. This was als cnfirmed by images f the brain using functinal magnetic resnance imaging(FMR).
“Until nw, researchers assumed that humans als detect and prcess perceived alarm signals particularly quickly in the frm f screams, as this is an imprtant survival mechanism(机制),” says Frihhlz. But unlike mnkeys and ther mammals, nn-alarming screams wuld have becme mre imprtant fr cmmunicatin.“This changed pririty(优先)is prbably due t needs that have evlved in the evlutin f cmplex human scial relatinships."

Fr Zeb Hgan, wh’s been dcumenting large freshwater fishes fr almst tw decades, the discvery f the stingray, which was released alive back int the river, filled him with hpe. "It prves these underwater big fish, which are in critical danger, still exist," says Hgan.

What was clear was that the river giants were shrinking in number, threatened by a hst f factrs including verfishing, water pllutin, and the presence f dams, which blck migrating fish frm cmpleting their life cycles. As Hgan's wrk prgressed, its fcus increasingly turned t cnservatin. “It was never abut just finding the biggest fish,” Hgan says, “but lking fr ways t prtect these extrardinary animals that, in sme cases, have been n Earth fr hundreds f millins f years but are nw drifting ut f entities."
