Then the rescuing team went t the next building. Suddenly the leader ran back, calling “Cme here.” He came t the bdy,put his hands under the wman, feeling and tuching, then shuted ludly and gladly,“There is smene,a baby, still living.”

Pasta and pizza were n everyne’s lunch menu in my native land f Italy. Everyne wh had such a lunch was fair-skinned and spke Italian. A few years later, as I std in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a schl in Brklyn, I realized things were n lnger that simple. My classmates ranged frm thse kids with pale skin and large blue eyes t thse with rich brwn skin and dark hair. The fd chices were almst as diverse as the students. In frnt f me was an array f fds I culdn’t even name in my native language. Fearing that I wuld pick ut smething awful, I desperately tried t ask the by ahead f me fr a recmmendatin. Unfrtunately, between us std the barrier f language.
Althugh my kindergarten experience feels like a century ag, the lessns I learned will stick in my mind frever. Fr the past three summers, I have wrked in a gvernment agency in New Yrk. New immigrants much like the little girl in the lunch line flded ur ffice seeking help. I ften had t be an interpreter fr the Italian-speaking nes. As I served the rle f vital cmmunicatin link, I was reminded f my desperate struggle t cnverse befre I learned English. I watched with great sympathy as elderly Italians tried t hld a cnversatin in Italian with peple wh did nt speak the language. It suddenly became very clear t me hw lucky I was t be fluent in tw languages.
In New Yrk, a multicultural city, students like me are blessed with a chance t wrk with a diverse ppulatin. In my English t Italian translatins, I’ve learned abut scial prgrams that I didn’t knw existed. This wrk expanded my mind in ways that are impssible inside the fur walls f a classrm. Walking thrugh the streets f Brklyn tday, I am n lnger cnfused by this city’s sunds and smells. Instead, enjy its diversity.

Half decade ag, at the end f my first semester teaching at Whartn, my student Kevin stpped by fr ffice hurs. He sat dwn and burst int tears. My mind started cycling thrugh a list f events that culd make a cllege junir cry: His girlfriend had brken up with him; he had been accused f cheating in exams; he frgt t turn in papers befre the deadline. “I just gt my first A-minus(减),” he said with his vice shaking.
Year after year, I watch in depressin as students are crazy abut getting straight A's. Sme sacrifice their health; a few have even tried t charge their schl after falling shrt(倒挂). All hld the belief that tp marks are a ticket t best graduate schls and rewarding jb ffers. I was ne f them. I started cllege with the gal f graduating with a 4.0. It wuld be a reflectin f my brainpwer and willpwer, shwing that I had the right stuff t succeed. But I was wrng.
The evidence is clear: Academic excellence is nt a strng predictr f career excellence. Acrss industries, research shws that the cnnectin between grades and jb perfrmance is mdest in the first year after cllege and unimprtant within a handful f years. Take Micrsft fr example, nce emplyees are tw r three years ut f cllege, their grades have n bearing n their perfrmance. (Of curse, it must be said that if yu gt D's, yu prbably didn't end up at Micrsft.)
Academic grades rarely assess qualities like creativity, leadership and teamwrk skills, r scial, emtinal and plitical intelligence. Yes, straight A students master large amunts f infrmatin and reprduce it in exams. But career success is rarely abut finding the right slutin t a prblem—it’s mre abut finding the right prblem t slve. B. Tp marks meant well-paid jb ffers.
    C. It was wrng t care t much abut marks.
    D. Straight A's dn't bring creative perfrmances.
    21. Why are the emplyees at Micrsft mentined?
    A. T stress the cmpany values emplyees with tp marks.
    B. T indicate academic perfrmance is imprtant.
    C. T shw academic excellence isn’t a strng predictr f career perfrmance.
    D. T intrduce successful example in the technlgy industry.
    22. What shuld peple fcus mre n t succeed accrding t the passage?
    A. Hw t be a creative leader.B. What t d with detailed infrmatin.

There’s nthing particularly difference abut the way Canadians celebrate Hallween, yet perhaps at least in my neighbrhd, it seems t be mre abut tgetherness than any great passin t wear a witch’s hat r string sme nets arund the bush. Flklrists trace Hallween back t the Celtic festival f Samhain. Nichlas Rgers, in his bk Hallween: Frm Pagan Ritual t Party Night, says the feast marked the midpint between the autumn equinx(秋分)and the fall f winter, a time f stck-taking and preparatins.
Hallween came t Nrth America with Irish and Scttish migratin in the 19th century and underwent many repeats. “Hallween’s ability t prvide a public space fr scial develpment held it in gd psitin at a time when ther ptentially wild hlidays were becming mre institutinalized and dmesticated (驯服的),” argues Mr. Rgers. It changed frm a family affair t a party united by adults.
In ppular culture, Hallween is viewed as an American secular hliday. Accrding t digital cupn cmpany RetailMeNt, 73% f Americans plan t celebrate it this year, and it’s a phenmenn in Canada t. “It’s becme bigger and mre celebrated than it ever has,” says Chris Ainswrth, wh funded the Canadian Haunters Assciatin, a grup f hardcre Hallween enthusiasts wh turn their hmes int detailed haunted huses each year. In 2018, the Retail Cuncil f Canada made news saying Canadians were nw utspending Americans n Hallween, t the ttal f $ 1 billin annually. The estimate has remained stable, says Diane Brisebis, the cuncil president. That’s nt because enthusiasm has declined but because prices have been driven dwn.
Sme here are unsatisfied with the cmmercial in the festivities. But in sme ways the hliday has als returned t its rts as a cmmunity-centered activity. And perhaps that’s why everyne gets s excited abut Hallween in Trnt, a metrplis that is knwn as a “city f villages.
    23. What d the Canadians seem t like abut Hallween?
    A. It enriches peple’s life.B. It makes peple excited.

    D. It can change ther hlidays int mre reasnable nes.
    25. It can be inferred frm the last paragraph that ________ .
    A. the Hallween always make peple excited
    B. peple in Trnt like t celebrate Hallween
    C. the Hallween is gradually returning its traditin
D peple aren’t cntent with cmmercial activities in Hallween
    26. Frm which is the text prbably taken?
    A. A bilgy textbk.B. A health reprt.
    C. A research paper.D. A culture magazine.

Have yu ever wndered what the fd yu eat every day can tell yu abut where yu cme frm? Have yu ever wndered why peple frm different parts f the wrld eat different types f fd? Immigrants bring the fd f their cuntries with them wherever they g and cking traditinal fd is a way f preserving their culture when they mve t new places.
In China, harmny is a vital quality in almst every aspect f life. This is reflected in Chinese cuisine, where almst every flavr is used in a balanced way creating delicius dishes with flavrs that g well tgether. The cuisine f the United States als reflects its histry. The Eurpean clnizatin f the Americas brught Eurpean ingredients and cking styles t the U. S.
As the wrld becmes mre glbalized, it is easier t access cuisines frm different cultures. We shuld embrace ur heritage (传统) thrugh ur culture’s fd but we shuld als becme mre infrmed abut ther cultures by trying their fds. It’s imprtant t remember that each dish has a special place in the culture t which it belngs, and is special t thse wh prepare it.

    B. It balances the dishes f different cuntries.
    C. It cntains abundant dishes with varius flavrs.
    D. It is extremely crucial t balance peple’s daily life.
    30. What can be the suitable title fr the text?
    A. What Fd Tells Us Abut CultureB. What Effect Fd Causes n Culture
    C. Hw Fd Becmes Mre GlbalizedD. Hw Traditinal Cuisine is Passed Dwn
