(2022秋·江苏徐州·高二校考期中)When asked why he or she wears clothes, some people will probably answer “to keep warm and to cover my body”. These are the basic reasons why clothes are worn, but people also want to look attractive and appear successful to others.
If people only wore clothes for warmth and to cover their bodies, most clothes would be simple and cheap. In most Western countries, however, clothes are sometimes very expensive. The main reason for this is not the cost of the cloth or the cost of making the clothes. The clothes are expensive because of fashion.
Successful businessmen, for example, often wear very expensive suits, shirts and ties. Sometimes they pay thousands of dollars for a suit and hundreds of dollars for a tie. It’s just a suit and a tie but they pay these prices because of the famous name of the designer. A suit costing much less would be just as warm and would cover the wearer’s body just as well.
Fashion is always changing, which means those who want to be fashionable have to buy new clothes every few months, even if last month's clothes have only been worn once or twice. Some people have wardrobes full of clothes that have hardly been worn but are no longer in fashion. Being fashionable, therefore, can be a very expensive pastime!
24.What do people basically wear clothes for?
A.Keeping warm and covering bodies. B.Following the fashion.
C.Looking attractive to others. D.Appearing successful to others.
25.We can learn from the passage that _______.
A.fashion is not always changing B.fashion is an expensive pastime.
C.fashion designers like expensive clothes D.expensive clothes are warmer
26.What does the underlined word “wardrobes” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Fashionable clothes shops. B.Cupboards for storing clothes.
C.The clothes that some people have. D.Shelves used for keeping books.
27.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Clothes and fashion. B.Suits and ties.
C.Cost and pastime. D.Beauty and success.
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.B 27.A
根据第一段“When asked why he or she wears clothes, some people will probably answer “to keep warm and to cover my body”. These are the basic reasons why clothes are worn, but people also want to look attractive and appear successful to others.(当问到为什么要穿衣服时,有些人可能会回答“为了保暖和遮盖身体”。这些是为什么穿衣服的基本原因,但人们也想在别人面前看起来有吸引力和成功)”可知,人们穿衣服主要是为了保暖和覆盖身体。故选A。
根据第二段中“In most Western countries, however, clothes are sometimes very expensive. The main reason for this is not the cost of the cloth or the cost of making the clothes. The clothes are expensive because of fashion.(然而,在大多数西方国家,衣服有时非常昂贵。主要原因不是布料的成本,也不是制作衣服的成本。由于流行,这些衣服很贵)”可知,时尚是一种昂贵的消遣。故选B。
26.词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“full of clothes that have hardly been worn but are no longer in fashion”可知,装满了几乎没有穿过但不再流行的衣服。
根据最后一段中“Fashion is always changing, which means those who want to be fashionable have to buy new clothes every few months, even if last month's clothes have only been worn once or twice.(时尚总是在变化,这意味着那些想要时尚的人每隔几个月就得买新衣服,即使上个月的衣服只穿了一两次)”结合文章介绍人类穿衣服的基本需求是保暖,但是现在更多的人是为了追求时尚买一些很贵的衣服,但是时尚在不断的变化,所以很多人的衣橱充满了过时的衣服,时尚是一个昂贵的消遣方式。 故选A。
(2022秋·江苏连云港·高二校联考期中)For many of us, summertime means road trips to the beach or mountains, or at the very least some additional dust on the outside of our vehicle. The extra dirt leads us to do one of two things: wash our car in the driveway or head to the car wash. But which choice is better for the environment?
The main concerns with either choice are the amount of fresh water used and the types of chemicals used to get rid of the dirt. Both of these concerns can be closely monitored when washing the car at home, says Katy Gresh, spokeswoman for the Southwest Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. She advises car owners to keep a set amount of water in a container for the entire wash. “You don’t want to leave the water running or use more than you need for the job,” she says. But even following this piece of advice comes with an environmental risk: Washing your car in the driveway gets the dirty water into drains (下水道).
“Drains are not made for treating waste.” says John Schombert, executive director of 3 Rivers Wet Weather. Even when car owners use natural soaps to wash their car, Schombert says they are probably ineffective in breaking down grease(油脂)anyway.
The commercial car wash knows full well the rules regarding wastewater in drains. According to the International Carwash Association (ICA), professional car washes must use special water treatment systems. These processes not only keep the dirty water out of drains and regular water treatment systems, but also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.
As experts point out, cleaning our car at home can use 100 gallons of water. Compare that to self-service car washes, which allow you to use only about 17 or 18 gallons of water. And most full-service car washes average about 30 to 45 gallons of water per vehicle.
28.What does Katy suggest people do about washing cars?
A.Use soft toothbrushes. B.Save treated water.
C.Put aside some water. D.Avoid using chemicals.
29.What is Schombert’s attitude to washing cars at home?
A.Disapproving. B.Favorable. C.Indifferent. D.Objective.
30.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.Rules of handling wastewater. B.Advantages of professional car washes.
C.Processes of getting rid of dirty water. D.Drawbacks of water treatment systems.
31.Which mehod of car washing consumes the least water?
A.The full-service car washes. B.Car washing in the driveway.
C.The self-service car washes. D.Car washing using natural soaps.
【答案】28.C 29.A 30.B 31.C
根据第二段第三句“She advises car owners to keep a set amount of water in a container for the entire wash.”(她建议车主在整个洗车过程中,在容器里放一定量的水。)
根据第三段Schombert 所说的话“Drains are not made for treating waste. Even when car owners use natural soaps to wash their car, they are probably ineffective in breaking down grease(油脂)anyway.”(排水沟不是用来处理废物的。 故选A项。
根据第四段“These processes not only keep the dirty water out of drains and regular water treatment systems, but also work to reduce water usage at commercial facilities.”( 这些过程不仅可以防止污水进入下水道和常规的水处理系统,而且还可以减少商业设施的用水量。)
根据最后一段“As experts point out, cleaning our car at home can use 100 gallons of water. Compare that to self-service car washes, which allow you to use only about 17 or 18 gallons of water. And most full-service car washes average about 30 to 45 gallons of water per vehicle.”( 正如专家指出的那样,在家里清洗汽车可以消耗100加仑的水。
(2022秋·江苏苏州·高二苏州中学校考期中)Why does social media cause feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence? Because instead of being real life, it is impression management, a way of marketing yourself, carefully choosing and filtering (过滤) the picture and words to put your best face forward.
Online “friends” made through social media do not follow the normal psychological progression of friendship. You share neither physical time nor emotional conversations over the Internet. You simply communicate photographs and catchy posts to a diverse group of people whom you have “friended” or “followed” based on an accidental interaction. This is not to say that your social media friends can’t be real friends. They absolutely can, but the two are not the same. Generally speaking, there are no unfiltered or casually taken photos on our social media pages because it wouldn’t feel safe to be completely authentic (真实的) and vulnerable (易受伤的) with some of our “friends” whom we don’t actually know or with whom trust has yet to be built.
Social media can certainly be an escape from the daily routines, but we must be cautious about the negative effects on a person’s overal psychological well-being.
As humans, we are eager for social connection. Scrolling (滚动) through pages of pictures and comments, however, does not provide the same degree of fulfillment as face-to-face interactions do. Also, we tend to idealize others’ lives and compare our downfalls to their greatest accomplishments, ending in feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence.
Social media can lead to unhealthy pursuit for perfection. Some people begin to attend certain events or travel to different places so that they can snap that “perfect” photo. However, pictures and posts should be byproducts of life’s treasured moments and fun times, not the planned and calculated image that one is putting out into cyberspace in an attempt to fill insecurities or unmet needs.
Ultimately, social media has increased our ability to connect with various types of people all over the globe. It has opened doors for business and allowed us to stay connected to people whom we may not otherwise get to follow. However, social media should feel like a fun experience, not one that contributes to negative thoughts and feelings. If the latter is the case, increasing face to face time with trusted friends and minimizing time scrolling online will prove to be a reminder that your real social network is much more rewarding than any “like”, “follow” or “share” can be.
32.How does social media affect our life?
A.It may improve our physical appearance.
B.It may make us feel isolated and insecure.
C.It may filter our negative impressions on others.
D.It may enhance our communication skills.
33.Why do people post photos selectively on social media?
A.They do not want to lose their followers.
B.They are eager to become famous overnight.
C.They do not find all their online friends trustworthy.
D.They want to avoid offending any of their audience.
34.What do humans tend to do according to the passage?
A.Have more face-to-face interactions.
B.Exaggerate their life’s accomplishments.
C.Learn lessons from other people’s downfalls.
D.Paint a rosy picture of other people’s lives.
35.What does the author advise when online experience becomes unpleasant?
A.Stay connected to online friends for suggestions.
B.Strengthen ties with real-life friends instead of online friends.
C.Connect with various types of people all over the globe.
D.Avoid negative thoughts and feelings through online pages.
根据文章第一段“Why does social media cause feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence? Because instead of being real life, it is impression management, a way of marketing yourself, carefully choosing and filtering (过滤) the picture and words to put your best face forward.(为什么社交媒体会让人感到孤独和缺乏自信?因为这不是真实的生活,而是一种印象管理,一种推销自己的方式,仔细选择和过滤图片和文字,把你最好的一面展现出来。)”和文章第二段“Generally speaking, there are no unfiltered or casually taken photos on our social media pages because it wouldn’t feel safe to be completely authentic (真实的) and vulnerable (易受伤的) with some of our “friends” whom we don’t actually know or with whom trust has yet to be built.(一般来说,我们的社交媒体页面上没有未经过滤或随意拍摄的照片,因为对于一些我们实际上并不了解或尚未建立信任的“朋友”,完全真实和脆弱会让人感到不安全。)”
根据文章第二段“Generally speaking, there are no unfiltered or casually taken photos on our social media pages because it wouldn’t feel safe to be completely authentic (真实的) and vulnerable (易受伤的) with some of our “friends” whom we don’t actually know or with whom trust has yet to be built.(一般来说,我们的社交媒体页面上没有未经过滤或随意拍摄的照片,因为对于一些我们实际上并不了解或尚未建立信任的“朋友”,完全真实和脆弱会让人感到不安全。)”
根据文章第四段“Also, we tend to idealize others’ lives and compare our downfalls to their greatest accomplishments, ending in feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence.(此外,我们倾向于把别人的生活理想化,把我们的失败和他们最伟大的成就作比较,最终感到孤独和缺乏自信。)”
根据文章最后一段“However, social media should feel like a fun experience, not one that contributes to negative thoughts and feelings. 九、读后续写
67.(2022秋·江苏盐城·高二江苏省阜宁中学校考期中)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of years ago, I volunteered to be a finish-line “hugger” at the Kentucky Special Olympics held in Richmond.
The day of the event dawned dull, wet and gray. Even though it started to rain and a cold wind blew, most of the participants were so excited that they didn’t seem to notice the weather at all.
My job was to stand at the end of a lane on the track and hug the person in that lane when he or she crossed the finish line. It seemed to me that many of the participants completed their races just so they could get that finish “hug”. As the arms of the hugger closed around them, their faces lit up with pure joy, whether they came in first or dead last.
While we huggers stood around, we talked. I was told that most of the participants had been training for the races all year. I also noticed that, the Special Olympic participants weren’t here just to win. They didn’t talk negatively about the people they were racing against. In fact, they hugged and wished each other luck before they started, and hugged again when it was over, whether they had won or not.
What I remember most vividly from that day was the long-distance race. It was a long race by any standards: twelve laps around the track. There were only four participants, three boys and one girl. They were only a couple of laps into the race when the rain started up again. Standing in the rain, I began to feel miserable. My feet hurt. I was soaking wet. I was hungry. I was cold when the rain and wind came and hot when the sun came out. I thought irritably: This race is lasting entirely too long. Even though the three boys were nearly finished, the girl was at least four laps behind. I wondered why she kept going when there was obviously no way she could win.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Finally, the three boys finished but they didn’t leave right away.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As she approached the finishing line, the girl was barely running.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Finally, the three boys finished but they didn’t leave right away. The boys didn’t leave right away, but waited by the track cheering the girl on each time she went by. She was the runner in my lane and each time she ran by me, I could see she was wet and in pain and obviously exhausted. As she completed each lap her face was a little redder and her steps were slowing down. But she didn’t quit.
As she approached the finishing line, the girl was barely running. The audience went wild when she crossed the line. She fell into my arms and started sobbing. After hugging the three boys, she turned to the audience and bowed, saying “Thank you all.” Then she hugged me again and made her way to the awards table. I stood motionless, astonished and awed. Tears coursed down my face as I watched her joyfully accept her award for fourth place. At that moment, I understood why these Olympics were “special”.
