Have yu ever nticed the clur f the water in a river r stream after a heavy rainfall? What d yu think caused this change in clur? It is sil that has been washed int the river frm the riverbank r frm the nearby fields.
Cmpnents f Sft
Sil is made up f a number f layers(层), each having its wn distinctive clur and texture. The upper layer is knwn as the litter. It acts like a blanket, limiting temperature changes and reducing water lss. The tpsil layer is made up f small particles f rck mixed with rtten plant and animal matter called humus(腐殖质), which is black and gives the tpsil its dark clur. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, xygen, and water. Belw the tpsil is the subsil, a layer that cntains mre stnes mixed with nly small amunts f rganic matter. This layer is lighter in clur because f the lack f humus. Beneath the sil lies a layer f bedrck.
Sil frms frm the bttm up. Over time bedrck is attacked by rain, wind, frst, and snw. It is gradually brken dwn int smaller particles in a prcess called weathering. Plants begin t grw, and rtten materials enrich the tpsil. Mst f the sil in Eastern Canada, fr example, was frmed frm weathered rck that was expsed when the ice disappeared l2,000 years ag.
Water Beneath the Sil
Surface water cllects and flws abve the grund in lakes pnds, and rivers. Once in the sil r rck, it is called grundwater. Gravity pulls grundwater thrugh the sil in a prcess called perclatin(渗透). Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water table. Under this is bedrck thrugh which water cannt perclate.
As water perclates dwnward, it disslves rganic matter and minerals frm the sil and carries them t deeper layers. This causes a serius prblem because plants require these nutrients fr grwth.
Sil pH
Sil can be acidic, neutral, r basic. The pH f the sil is determined by the nature f the rck frm which it was frmed, and by the nature f the plants that grw and rt in it.
The acidity f rain and snw can lwer the pH f the grundwater that enters the sil. By burning fssil fuels such as cal, il and gasline, humans have been cntributing t higher levels f acidity in many sils. When fssil fuels are burned, gases are released int the air and then fall back t earth as acid rain. Acid sil increases the prblem f carrying nutrients t lwer sil levels. As nutrients are remved, sil is less fertile. Plants grw mre slwly in acidic sil, and als becme easily attacked by diseases.

The researchers suspect that cntrlling parents affect their child’s ability t learn hw t argue his r her wn viewpint in ther relatinships. Althugh parents d need t set bundaries, dminating strategies imply that any disagreement will damage the bnd itself. Separate findings suggest that parents wh explain the reasns behind their rules and turn disagreements int cnversatins leave yungsters better prepared fr future disagreements.

Abut Old Faithful —The Mst Famus Geyser (间歇性喷泉) in the Wrld
Discvered in 1870 by the Washburn Expeditin, Old Faithful geyser was named fr its frequent eruptins (喷发) — which number mre than a millin since Yellwstne became the wrld’s first natinal park in 1872.

Peple speak f the average time between eruptins. This is misleading. The mathematical average between eruptins f Old Faithful is currently 74 minutes, but it desn’t like t act average! Intervals can range frm 60-110 minutes. Visitrs can check fr psted predictin times in mst buildings in the Old Faithful area.
Hw high des Old Faithful erupt and hw lng will it last?
Old Faithful can vary in height frm 100–180 feet with an average near 130–140 feet. This has been the histrical range f its recrded height. Eruptins nrmally last between 1.5 t 5 minutes.

It depends n what yu call faithful. The famus geyser currently erupts arund 20 times a day and can be predicted with a 90 percent cnfidence rate within a 10 minute variatin. Prir t the 1959 earthquake, Old Faithful erupted 21 times per day. That’s a significant decrease in activity fr gelgists tracking each eruptin, but t visitrs seeing ne r tw eruptins…it lks just fine.
Hw many gallns f water are expelled during an eruptin?
It depends n the duratin f the eruptin. Scientists estimate that the amunt ranges frm 3,700 gallns (fr a shrt duratin f 1.5 minutes) t 8,400 gallns (fr a lnger duratin f 4.5 minutes).
Hw ht is the water in Old Faithful?
During an eruptin, the water temperature at the vent has been measured at 204°F (95.6°C). The steam temperature has been measured abve 350°F!
