I used t prcrastinate (keep leaving things that shuld be dne until later). Years ag, a neighbr kid kicked a ftball and shattered a small basement windw f ur huse. We were a family f six living n a small salary at the time, s I barded it up, thinking I’d get t it smeday. Hwever, the frame was rusted shut. I culdn’t fix it.
Over the years, I’d smetimes get estimates frm windw cmpanies. The plan was t upgrade t energy-efficient windws fr the whle huse. $15, 000. It was simply ut f reach. One cntractr explained that whever replaced it wuld need t cut and shape by hand, a labr-intensive and expensive prcess.
Hnestly, the thught f that windw ate at me fr years. Every time I went dwn there, every time I went t the hardware stre, it kept trubling me. I knew I needed t address it, but I had built up the prcess (and the price) s much in my mind that I was unable t act.
Then my wife had a jb change, and we needed t mve. A ptential buyer culdn’t get a lan n the prperty if there was a brken windw. S I pulled ff the bards t face this thing head-n. It had been at least 5 years.
I grabbed sme rust remver, sprayed all arund the rusted frame, and gave it a strng pull. T my astnishment, it mved fr the first time. I pulled the windw ut and tk it dwntwn. It was a $12 fix.
I culd have fixed the prblem fr $12 the same day it happened. But I let it haunt me fr years, shutting ut light and letting in bugs. It didn’t need t be the mst efficient. It just needed t be a windw.
OK, this isn’t really abut my windw. I mean the stry is true, but it’s als a decent fable. Many f us, especially thse with anxiety, tend t live with brken windws f ne type r anther fr years.
After I psted my stry nline, many shared their stries with me. One cmmented, “This reminded me f a statement, ‘We suffer mre in imaginatin than in reality.’” Anther respnded, “This is why my business partner tells me, ‘Perfect is the enemy f dne.’”
Step frward, and yu’ll find a slutin.
    By Nathan Hwe

On January 1st, 2018, “gaming disrder” — in which games are played uncntrllably, despite causing harm — gained recgnitin frm the Wrld Health Organizatin (WHO). Last year, China, the wrld’s biggest gaming market, annunced new rules limiting children t just a single hur f play a day. In the ld days games were bught nce and fr all. But these days, games are free and mney is earned frm purchases f in-game gds, which ties playtime directly t develpers’ incme. Fr anther, games makers cmbine psychlgical thery and data, which helps them maximize the playtime. Smartphnes and mdern vide game machines use their permanent Internet cnnectins t send gameplay data back t develpers. That allws prducts t be cnstantly adjusted t increase spending n games.
The gaming industry shuld realize that, in the real wrld, it has a prblem, and that prblem is grwing. Nw that gaming addictin cmes with an fficial WHO recgnitin, diagnses (诊断) becme mre cmmn. Clinics are already reprting bming business, as lckdwns have given gamers mre time t spend with their hbby. And being put tgether in the public mind, fairly r nt, with gambling will nt d the industry any favurs.

T d this, scientists separate a single gene frm ther nes at a time and then bserve what effect it has n the muse fr a lng time. This has s far been dne mre than 7, 000 times and has achieved great success. Researchers are nw wrking alngside eye care centers in Texas and Iwa in rder t cmpare the mice’s genes t thse f patients.
