Cnventinal wisdm says that hardship can make us ld befre ur time. In fact, a new study suggests that vilence nt nly leaves lng-term scars n children’s bdies, but als changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal t seven t ten years f premature aging.
Scientists measured this by studying the ends f children’s chrmsmes (染色体), called telmeres(端粒), says Idan Shalev, lead authr f a study published in Mlecular Psychiatry.
Telmeres are special DNA sequences (序列)which prevent the DNA in chrmsmes frm separating. They get shrter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannt divide any mre and dies.
Several factrs have been fund t shrten telmeres, including smking, radiatin and psychlgical stresses such as being treated badly when yung and taking care f a chrnically ill persn.
In this study, researchers examined whether expsure t vilence culd make children’s telmeres shrten faster than nrmal. They interviewed the mthers f 236 children 3t ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the yungsters had been expsed t dmestic vilence between the mther and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; r bullying. Researchers measured the children's telmeres —in cells btained by wiping the insides f their cheeks一at ages 5 and 10.
