On January 22, 2022, the British-Belgian 19-year-old, Zara Rutherford, successfully landed her two-seat microlight aircraft back at the Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport, from where she had departed 155 days ago, fulfilling her dream to be the youngest woman to fly around the world solo.
“I feel excited not only to break the Guinness World Record, but also to diminish the gender gap by 11 years between the current youngest male record holder Travis Ludlow 18 at the time of his record, and the previous female record holder Shaesta Waez, who was 30 when she completed her ‘Dreams Soar’ around-the-world flight.” Rutherford wrote on her blog.
Rutherford's journey crossing five continents and 52 countries began on August 18, 2021. She encountered numerous unexpected delays along the way. They included an unscheduled stop in Redding, California, due to wildfires and a month-long stop in Nome, Alaska, to renew her Russian visa. She also faced several challenges in the air. When flying from Iceland to Greenland, Rutherford lost radio contact with her ground team for much of the 3-hour flight. The incidents also resulted in her having to cross over Russia in sub-zero temperatures. The hardest part was flying over Siberia—it was extremely cold and if the engine broke down, she'd be hours away from rescue. Despite the severe difficulties, the determined young pilot never gave up on her dream.
Rutherford grew up around airplanes. Her British father flies commercially, while her Belgian mother is a recreational pilot. The young girl began learning how to fly at age 14 and obtained her aviators license in 2020. With her goal of flying around the world accomplished, Rutherford now has her sights set even higher. She wants to become an astronaut and explore space.
She hopes that her journey will encourage more young women to pursue careers in aviation. Currently the number of female pilots is just 5 percent. Rutherford says, “It's an easy thing to say, but just go for it. If you don't try and see how high you can fly, then you'll never know.”
    24. What does the underlined word “diminish" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Narrow. B. Divide. C. Fill. D. Cause.
    25. Why did Rutherford have to stop in Nome?
    A. The wildfires were too fierce. B. Her Russian visa was due.
    C. The weather was too severe. D. Her engine broke down.
    26. What's the purpose of paragraph 4?
    A. To switch to a new topic. B. To summarize her achievements.
    C. To illustrate her admirable talents. D. To add some background information.
    27. What does the passage try to convey?
    A. Life is not all roses. B. Dream big, aim high.
    C. Not to advance is to go back. D. The greatest talkers, the least doers.
    C
In traditional stick puppet shows in Shanxi, puppeteers hold up and manipulate (操控) the puppets using three rods (杆). The puppets are dressed in traditional costumes and frolic (嬉戏) on stage. They are able to change their facial expressions and perform complicated movements.
Such art can’t be created without the painstaking effort of puppet makers like Wang Maowei, 40, who is from Xiaoyi, Shanxi.
“When I chose puppet-making as a teenager, I gradually fell in love with it and decided to dedicate myself to the craft,” Wang said. In 2008, Xiaoyi’s stick puppet plays were added to the national intangible cultural heritage list.
It takes 40 to 50 days to make a stick puppet. The average height of a puppet is 75 centimeters to 1 meter, and they have different costumes to fit various plays and plots. “To make puppets, you need to have sensitivity and a basic foundation in the fine arts,” Wang said.
Traditional Xiaoyi puppet plays use the style of local operas, which are appealing to the elderly. Years ago, Wang realized that plays must cater to the market. He decided to start with the appearance of the puppets.
Stick puppets are traditionally carved from wood and are both time-consuming to make and heavy to hold. Wang found that a special kind of kraft paper is a perfect substitute (替代品). It means craftspeople can put things inside the puppets’ heads to allow them to be operated — the nose, eyes and mouth of a puppet can all move via the use of rods.
Journey to the West, a classic Chinese novel, has been frequently adapted in puppet shows. In the tale, the Monkey King can use his eyes to distinguish monsters from ordinary human beings. To recreate this power in his show, Wang makes the Monkey King puppet shoot laser beams (激光) from his eyes and spit (喷) fire from his mouth.
“It requires time and energy to create a delicate piece of work... These puppets are like my own children and I always take good care of them,” Wang said.
    28. According to Wang Maowei, what specific skills are required for making stick puppets?
    A. Creativity and imagination.
    B. Patience and physical strength.
    C. Sensitivity and a basic knowledge of fine arts.
    D. Engineering and technological skills.
    29. Why did Wang decide to use kraft paper for making stick puppets?
    A. To reduce production time and effort.
    B. To make puppets look more beautiful.
    C. To reduce the costs of making puppets.
    D. To make them lighter and easier to operate.
    30. How does Wang make the Monkey King puppet unique?
    A. By making it sing and dance.
    B. By making it spit fire from its mouth.
    C. By making it fly across the stage.
    D. By making it shoot laser beams from its ears.
    31. What does the underlined word “distinguish” in paragraph 7 most likely mean?
    A. tell B. appreciate C. enjoy D. prevent
    D
In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, multiple studies have shown that this act has many benefits.
New brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, confirms the same choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or lecture notes by hand, you simply remember the content better afterwards,” said Audrey Van der Meer, author of the study.
The study was conducted using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. The participants included 12 young adults and 12 children. This is the first time that children have participated in such a study. Each subject was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood(风帽) with over 250 electrodes(电极). The sensors(传感器)in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results showed that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated (激活) by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build contact between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the outcomes stress the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it’s important for children to go through the tiring phase of learning to write by hand”, she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters are beneficial in several ways. “If you use a keyboard you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor(精细动作)skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an essay, but you should take notes by hand during a lecture.
    32. What’s the main purpose of the text?
    A. To encourage the use of handwriting
    B. To advise children to start to write early
    C. To report on new research on handwriting
    D. To explain how handwriting affects adults and children differently
    33. What do we know about the study?
    A. The study involved 45 participants altogether.
    B. The participants were divided into two groups to conduct.
    C. All the participants were gathered together for examinations.
    D. The sensors in the electrodes were used to track brain wave activity.
    34. Why does the brain become more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard according to Van der Meer?
    A. More senses are made active when writing by hand.
    B. Writing by hand is easier on the brain.
    C. Noise made by typing doesn’t distract the brain when writing by hand.
    D. The brain is more used to the skills required to write by.
35 How does Van der Meer think handwriting benefits people?
    A. It allows children to become more patient. B. It increases people’s interest in learning.
    C. It helps people develop fine motor skills. D. It allows people to write better essays.

C.How to keep food from going bad in summer.
    答案】18.A 19.A 20.C
    【原文】
During the summer you should be even more careful than usual because food goes bad faster in hot weather than in cold weather. When you buy frozen and refrigerated foods, don’t make long stops on your way home because frozen foods could become soft or warm. Using bags helps keep food cold until you can get home. Milk and milk products should be refrigerated immediately. When camping or picnicking or at any time when refrigeration can’t be made use of, use special dry foods. Don’t leave food in a hot car. Picnic favorites like meat, chicken and eggs should be kept in a cooler box. Above all, if the food doesn’t seem to be normal in smell or appearance, throw it away immediately. Don’t taste it.

    【答案】24. A 25. B 26. D 27. B

    A. tell B. appreciate C. enjoy D. prevent
    【答案】28. C 29. D 30. B 31. A

    【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. C
