Billy Barr, 71, paused utside his muntainside cabin t measure the water percentage in snw. This year, it cntained abut 10 percent. “Anther year f high figure,” Barr sighed.Things were quite different five years ag, when the number had been arund 6 percent. “Nw the snw here has gtten wetter fr sure. We understand that weather is weather, and it changes all the time. But all f a sudden, the last five years have all presented high figures,” said Barr.“S that’s when things need ur attentin.”
Barr arrived in Gthic in 1972 as a student helping n a water chemistry prject. He stayed until the end f the year, then came permanently the fllwing summer. In the muntains, he felt relaxed — even thugh hme was a mining hut with a lamp and a sleeping bag. He’d always liked numbers; as a kid, he cunted gas statins n family trips. That’s what inspired his recrds, nt sme grand scientific ambitin. Over time, Barr fund he liked cmparing ne year t thers.
On a recent afternn, Barr sat at his cmputer, skimming thrugh decades f numbers. In the numbers, he pinted ut patterns. Nearly half the recrd lw temperatures came in his first decade here, and mre than half the recrd highs ccurred in the past ne. “Back in the 70s,there were winters when we had ver 100 days in a rw when it didn’t get abve freezing. Last winter, the mst was nine,” Barr wrried. “There’s a trend there. I really think we’re in a lad f truble. And we dn’t have much time fr this.”
After filling 10 ntebks with his recrds, Barr nw rganizes them in Excel and publishes them n his website. Researchers regularly ask him fr data, he said, and he was always pleased t share. Barr is witnessing snw fall here fr the 50th year straight. “I just want t keep it ging. It is interesting — it is, I think. And it’s helpful.”
24. Accrding t Barr, why shuld water percentage in snw be paid attentin t?
A. It increased by 4 percent this year.

The classic nightmare f suddenly realizing yu are naked in public culd sn get a futuristic twist: it might invlve the hrrr f lsing nt just yur mdesty but als yur pass cdes. Scientists recently created magnetic garments that they say can stre data, autmatically unlck drs r cntrl a nearby smartphne with gesture.
The cncept f interactive “smart clthing” has drawn attentin in the past cuple f years. Fr example, Ggle and Levi’s created a tuch-sensitive jacket that can perate a smartphne. This and ther smart garments are made with cnductive thread and usually require an attached electrnic device.
T eliminate the need fr such peripheral gear, researchers at the University f Washingtn recently tk advantage f what is a previusly untapped prperty f cnductive thread: its ability t be magnetized. “Using magnetic instead f electric prperties f the thread may seem like a small difference, but it is what makes this wrk interesting and exciting,” says Chris Harrisn, a cmputer scientist at Carnegie Melln University, wh was nt part f the research. The new technique allwed the researchers t d smething they say is unique amng wearables: turn them int strage devices.
The Washingtn team magnetized a patch f fabric embridered with cnductive thread, giving different parts f the clth a nrth r suth rientatin that crrespnd t binary 1’s r 0’. This step allwed the researchers t stre up t 33 millin different cmbinatins—such as pass cdes fr drs—n a shirt sleeve. They als created magnetic glves that culd cntrl a nearby smartphne with gestures. The team described its findings last Octber at a meeting f the Assciatin fr Cmputing Machinery.
The garments still stred data after washing, drying and irning, but they culd nt escape time’s eraser; after abut a week, the threads’ magnetic fields had weakened by arund 30 percent. The researchers suggest that using custm-made thread designed t hld strnger magnetic fields might wrk lnger. But fr nw the clthes may be best suited fr string temprary cdes, such as thse fund n htel key cards r clthing tags in stres. Harrisn says that it is “very unlikely yu are ever ging t achieve a cmparable density t magnetic hard drives” with data-string fabric, hwever.
28. What des the underlined sentence (1st paragraph) imply?
A. Peple wuld sn change their views n being naked in public.
B. There is n way t stp the decline f privacy right nw.
C. Peple wuld lse privacy t a cnsiderable degree.
D. The classic nightmare f lsing pass cdes culd never cme true.
29. Accrding t Chris Harrisn, using magnetic cnductive thread is interesting and exciting because ________.
A. it will gradually eliminate the need fr attached devices
B. it will turn any cmmn wearables int strage devices
C. it is such an abstract idea that giant cmpanies have made attempts at it
D. it brings scientists new challenges and makes their wrk ut f the rdinary
30. Which f the fllwing is NOT a feature f garments with new technlgy?
A. It is prtable and can interact with electrnic devices wirelessly.
B. it is sustainable and desn’t need further maintenance.
C. It is washable and can endure high temperature.
D. It can stre huge amunts f infrmatin.
31. What des Harrisn imply in the last paragraph?
A. Magnetic hard drivers will never lse their psitin t fabrics in strage.
B. Clth and fabric as a strage medium have replaced magnetic hard drives.
C. Data-string fabric can be as efficient as a traditinal strage medium nw.
D. In the shrt term, fabric used t stre data cannt vercme its weakness.
D
While the rest f us are sleeping, freshwater turtles(龟) frm Central America t Asia are getting ut f the water and basking(月光浴) at night. There have been reprts f this behavir befre, but nw a new study is the first t dcument the widespread ccurrence. The findings suggest this may be a cmmn and almst entirely verlked aspect f many species’ eclgy.
Dr. Dnald MeKnight, ne f the researchers, said he and a clleague first bserved freshwater turtles night basking at the Rss River in Twnsville, Australia. “We think it’s related t temperature. The water is staying s warm at night that it’s actually warmer than the turtles like t be and they can cl dwn by cming ut f the water,” says MeKnight.
Fr the study, researchers put cameras t watch the night activity f as many freshwater turtle species as pssible. The cameras were set up in 25 lcatins. They were prgrammed t take a pht every tw minutes. They cllected data n 29 species f freshwater turtles.
It wuld be lvely t think the turtles are just enjying sme leisure time when things are quiet. But the researchers nte that in mst cases, the turtles gt ut f water when the water was t warm and the air was cler. Given the warming planet, that’s admittedly a bit depressing. Hwever, nt all f the nighttime baskers were escaping t-warm water. Accrding t the study, turtles in India exhibited mre basking n cler nights, rather than warmer nights, and thse in Africa spent mre time basking at night in winter than in summer. The reasns fr these differences are unclear. It may be that at sme sites r seasns, turtles are escaping unfavurably warm water temperatures, while at thers, they are taking advantage f the warm air t increase their bdy temperature and escape unfavurably cld water.
Regardless f the “why” behind different species’ reasns fr midnight basking, it’s a fascinating lk at behavirs nt previusly dcumented by scientists. And it is at least encuraging t knw that turtles are figuring ut imprtant behavirs tied t climate change.
32. Why d the freshwater turtles frm Australia get ut f water at night?
A. T search fr extra fd. B. T avid natural enemies.
C. T cl themselves dwn. D. T enjy the quietness utside.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. Hw the study was cnducted B. What the study brught abut.
C. Why the study was carried ut. D. Where the study was made.
34. Which f the fllwing are the researchers certain abut?
A. Turtles in Africa flee water ften n summer nights.
B. The water is unfavrable fr turtles t survive in India.
C. The reasns fr turtles’ different behavirs are bvius.
D. Night basking is caused by the change f water temperature.
35. Hw des the authr feel abut the finding?
A. Skeptical. B. Psitive. C. Surprised. D. Desperate.
