Step inside mst mdern cars and instead f all the dials and switches yu are likely t find a tuchscreen. But, thugh tuchscreens prvide a cnvenient way t perate a lt f cntrls and settings, the latest research shws they can als be dangerus distractins.
T discver hw badly tuchscreens distract drivers, Neale Kinnear and his clleagues at the Transprt Research Labratry arranged a series f experiments. They had tw grups f 20 drivers. One cnsisted f regular users f Ggle’s Andrid Aut, a ppular app which lets drivers interact with their phne thrugh a car’s tuchscreen. The thers were partisans f Andrid Aut’s main cmpetitr, Apple Car Play.
Each participant cmpleted three 15-minute jurneys alng a set virtual rute using the labratry’s driving simulatr (模拟装置). On ne f these trips they had t carry ut tasks using nly the tuchscreen. These tasks included navigating t a restaurant, playing a particular sng, changing radi channels, and making a “hands-free” telephne call. On the secnd trip they had t d the same, but using nly the car’s vice-activated cntrls instead. The third jurney was a cntrl, with n assigned tasks.
Whenever a red bar flashed n the windscreen the researchers measured hw lng it tk a driver t react by pulling the indicatr stick t flash the car’s lights. As they expected, drivers using tuch cntrls n the screen tk lnger t respnd t the flashing bar than did thse using vice cntrls. Thugh the difference might be less than a secnd, at mtrway speeds this wuld result in an increased stpping distance f up t 25 metres.
Dr Kinnear was, hwever, surprised by the amunt f time drivers’ attentin was distracted by the series f glances needed t perate the screen. Amng the wrst utcmes were a mean f 20 secnds f cumulative glances using Andrid Aut t play a sng, and f 16 secnds t set up the rute t a restaurant with Car Play. Fr vice cmmands thse means fell t fur and three secnds respectively.
The researchers believe vice-activatin is a safer alternative, but the sftware is expected t take less time t respnd. Andy Peart f Artificial Slutins, a Swedish firm develping Al-assisted vice recgnitin, agrees.
8. What des the underlined wrd “partisans” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Designers.B. Funders.C. Supprters.D. Challengers.

A. Flashing bars were difficult t ntice.
B. Using tuchscreens was s time-cnsuming

These days, we wnder a lt abut why scial netwrks g bad, full f terrible behavir. But it’s equally illuminating (有启发性的) t ask abut the nes that wrk well. These cmmunities share ne characteristic: They’re small. Generally they have nly a few hundred members, r maybe a cuple thusand if they’re really ppular.
And smallness makes all the difference. First, these grups have a sense f chesin (凝聚性). The members have jined specifically t talk t peple with whm they share an enthusiasm. That creates a type f scial glue, a cntext and a mutual respect that can’t exist n a highly public site like Twitter, where anyne can crash any public cnversatin.
Mre imprtant, small grups typically have peple wh wrk t keep interactins plite. Smetimes this will be the rganizer r an active, lng-term participant. They’ll greet newcmers t make them feel welcme, draw ut quiet peple and slve cnflict when they see it emerge. But what’s crucial is that these key members mdel gd behavir, illustrating by example the cmmunity’s best standards. The internet thinkers Heather Gld, Kevin Marks and Deb Schultz put a name t this: “tummeling,” after the Yiddish “tummeler,” wh keeps a party ging.
Nne f these psitive elements can exist in a massive, public scial netwrk, where millins f peple can get int each ther’s spaces. That’s why perhaps the single biggest prblem facing scial media is that ur mainstream netwrks are t interested in scale. But scale breaks scial relatins.
Is there any way t apprach this prblem? I’ve never heard f any simple slutin. Strict antitrust laws fr the big netwrks wuld be useful, t encurage cmpetitin amng netwrks. But this likely wuldn’t fully slve the prblem f scale, since many users fancy scale t. Lnging fr massive, glbal audiences, they will crwd int whichever site ffers the hugest. Many f the well-knwn slutins t scial media might help, but all ignre the biggest prblem f all: Bigness itself.
12. Why d members frm small nline grups get alng well?
A. They have sme shared hbbies.B. They are mstly highly educated.
C. They knw the imprtance f safety.D. They are familiar with each ther.
13. Which f the fllwing belngs t “tummeling”?
A. A persn rganizes a successful birthday party.
B. A newcmer jins an rganizatin.
C. An active team member starts a cnflict.
D. A cnversatin rganizer encurages thers t speak.
14. What is the authr’s attitude t large scial netwrks getting plite?
A. Favrable.B. Pessimistic.C. Curius.D. Uncaring.
15. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Inapprpriate behavir nlineB. The small things that truly matter
C. Online cmmunities that actually wrkD. Different types f scial netwrks
