Why des it happen? Music tends t accmpany events that aruse emtins r therwise make strng impressins n us—such as weddings and graduatins. These kinds f experiences frm strng memries, and the music and memries likely becme intertwined(紧密相连) in ur neural(神经的) netwrks, accrding t Julene Jhnsn, a prfessr at the University f Califrnia. Mvements, such as dancing, als ften pair with ur experience f music, which can help frm memries. Even many years later, hearing the music can bring back memries f these lng-past events.
As Alive Inside shwsmusic has this pwer even fr many peple with dementia. Researchers nte that the brain areas that prcess and remember music are typically less damaged by dementia than ther areas, and they think it may explain the phenmenn.
They als pay attentin t elderly peple with dementia, especially thse in nursing hmes. “It’s pssible thse lng-term memries are still there,” Jhnsn says,“but peple just have a harder time accessing them because they’re in a strange place and there’re nt a lt f circumstances in which smene culd pull ut thse memries.”
Jhnsn als ntes that music is nt universally useful fr all peple with dementia since there are sme peple with dementia whse brain area that recgnizes music is damaged.
Despite music’s apparent benefits, few studies have explred its influence n memry recall in peple with dementia. “It’s really an untapped area,” Jhnsn says. Petr Janata is a researcher investigating the tpic f music and memry. He says that scientists still d nt have the answers t why and hw music reawakens memries in peple with dementia, but this phenmenn is real and it’s just a matter f time befre it’s fully brne ut by scientific research.

Alzheimer's AI
An estimated 5.7 millin peple in the U.S. have Alzheimer's disease-the mst cmmn type f dementia(痴呆)-and that number is expected t mre than duble by 2050. Early diagnsis is crucial fr patients t benefit frm the few therapies available. But n scans can deliver a cnclusive diagnsis while a persn is alive; instead dctrs have t cnduct numerus and cmplicated clinical and neurpsychlgical tests.S there is grwing interest in develping artificial intelligence t identify Alzheimer's based n brain imaging.
Researchers at the University f Califrnia,San Francisc, have nw successfully trained an AI algrithm(算法)t recgnize ne f the early signs f Alzheimer's-a reductin in the brain's glucse(葡萄糖)cnsumptin-in psitrn emissin tmgraphy (PET) imaging.
The algrithm accurately predicted an eventual Alzheimer's diagnsis in nearly all the test cases, accrding t the study. In PET imaging, a very small amunt f a radiactive cmpund are injected int the bdy, prducing three-dimensinal images f metablism(新陈代谢),circulatin and ther cellular activities. PET is well suited fr an AI diagnstic tl because Alzheimer's leads t subtle changes in the brain's metablism that begin years befre neural(神经的) tissue starts t g dwnhill, says study c-authr Jae H Shn,a radilgist at UCSF. These changes are "very hard fr radilgists t pick up,"he ntes.
The algrithm was trained and tested n 2,100 PET brain images frm abut 1,000 peple 55 years and lder. The images came frm a 12-year study that tracked peple wh wuld ultimately be diagnsed with Alzheimer's, as well as thse with mild memry declines and healthy cntrl participants. The algrithm was trained n 90 percent f the data and tested n the remaining 10 percent. It was then retested n a secnd, independent data set frm 40 patients mnitred fr 10 years. The algrithm was highly sensitive and was able t recgnize 81 percent f the patients in the first test grup and 100 percent in the secnd wh wuld be diagnsed with Alzheimer's six years later, n average. The findings were published in February in Radilgy.
The algrithm is based n "deep learning ,a machine-learning technique that uses artificial neural netwrks prgrammed t learn frm examples. "This is ne f the first prmising, preliminary(初步的) applicatins f deep learning t the diagnsis f Alzheimer's," says Christian Salvatre, a physicist at Italy's Natinal Research Cuncil, wh was nt invlved in the study. “The mdel perfrms very well when identifying patients with mild r late diagnses", he says, “but catching it in the earliest stages remains ne f the mst critical pen issues in this field."
12. Peple are increasingly interested in using AI t identify Alzheimer's because______
A. the number f peple suffering frm dementia is mre than dubling
B. diagnstic methds that are bth reliable and cnvenient are in need
C. there are nly a limited number f effective therapies fr the patients
D. diagnsing Alzheimer's disease thrugh AI is still an unexplred area
13. What can we learn abut PET imaging?
A. It recgnizes the wrsening f the neural tissue.
B. It reduces the glucse cnsumptin in the brain.
C. It changes the pattern f the brain's metablism.
D. It phtgraphs varius kinds f cellular activities.
14. Accrding t Paragraph 4,_________.
A. 90% f the peple in the study were trained n the algrithm
B. the participants in the study cnsist f peple bth yung and ld
C. 81% f the peple in the first test grup were diagnsed with Alzheimer's
D. the algrithm managed t recgnize all the patients in the secnd test grup
15. What can be inferred frm Paragraph 5?
A. The algrithm serves as a prmising treatment f Alzheimer's.
B. Deep learning has been widely applied in diagnsing Alzheimer's.
C. T detect Alzheimer's in its earliest stages calls fr mre explratin.
D. Whether t use the mdel t detect Alzheimer's remains a critical issue.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. C
【解析】
【分析】本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了利用人工智能诊断老年痴呆症,能够较早确诊。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的“Early diagnsis is crucial fr patients t benefit frm the few therapies available. But n scans can deliver a cnclusive diagnsis while a persn is alive; instead dctrs have t cnduct numerus and cmplicated clinical and neurpsychlgical tests.S there is grwing interest in develping artificial intelligence t identify Alzheimer's based n brain imaging.( 早期诊断对于患者是至关重要的,为了从可用的少数疗法中受益。但是,在一个人还活着的时候,没有任何扫描可以提供决定性的诊断;相反,医生必须进行大量复杂的临床和神经心理学测试。因此,人们越来越有兴趣开发人工智能来识别基于大脑成像的阿尔茨海默病。)”可推断,人们越来越有兴趣使用人工智能来识别阿尔茨海默病是因为需要即可靠又方便的诊断方法,故选B。
【13题详解】
