My dad is the kind of parent that has to know where I am and what time I’ll be home. He is strict with me because he cares about me more than anything in the world. My dad’s strictness comes from the way he was raised. He grew up working long hours on his family farm and his dad would throw wooden boards at him when he did something wrong. In high school, my dad woke up at four in the morning to get his chores done and walked to school so that he would make it to basketball practice by five. After school he went home to start a long night of chores.
On top of all the responsibilities my dad had at home, he played three sports and went to school. School would have been easy, but my dad had dyslexia(诵读困难). Every teacher my dad had thought that he was just unable to learn. My dad struggled in school until one teacher took the time to sit down and teach him how to read and write. To this day my dad tells me how grateful he is to that teacher who gave him a chance.
The best part about my dad is his attitude toward our family. When he comes home from a terrible day at work, he always puts a smile on his face because he knows the family is a lot more important than his own problems.
I know that I get my best qualities from my dad. He has shown me that with hard work I can accomplish something, and have fun while doing it. I know that my dad has strict rules because he loves me, and wants me to learn responsibility.

根据第一段“My dad’s strictness comes from the way he was raised. 以及“He grew up working long hours on his family farm and his dad would throw wooden boards at him when he did something wrong.

An airline passenger ensured a 20-year-old man was reunited with his lost wallet-along with a little extra something to make up for their time apart.
Hunter Shamatt first lost his wallet while he was on a Frontier Airlines flight from Omaha to attend his sister's wedding in Las Vegas earlier this month. On realizing his wallet was lost, he contacted the airline to see if anyone had turned it in—but to no avail. Since the wallet contained his ID, a signed paycheck, his debit card and $60 in cash, he “feared the worst”.
Shortly after the flight, however, Hunter was shocked to receive a package in the mail from an unknown sender. Inside was his wallet-along with an additional $40 in cash.
“Found this on a Frontier flight from Omaha to Denver-row 12, seat F stuck between the seat and wall,” read a letter in the package. “Thought you might want it hack. All the best. PS: I rounded your cash up to an even $100 so you could celebrate getting your wallet hack. Have fun!”
Hunter's mother, Jeannie, posted a photo of the letter to social media in hopes that they would be able to track down the sender and thank them for their kindness. All they had to go on was that the letter was sent from Applied Underwriters in Omaha and the sender's initials were signed: "T.B".
The Good Man was later identified as Todd Brown, a father-of-five who was delighted at the chance to "have a little fun" with helping out a hard-working stranger. Brown says that he often tries to do good deeds without any recognition, thus why he didn't sign his full name on the letter, but Jeannie later insisted on praising the Nebraska native on social media.
“I try to teach my children to do the right things in life, help people when you can despite the outcome,” she wrote on Facebook. “This story is more about restoring faith in people than anything”.
    5. What does the underlined word "to no avail" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Under discussion. B. In vain. C. Beyond belief. D. At a loss.
    6. Why did Jeannie upload a picture of the letter to social media?
    A. To throw light on the truth.
    B. To draw attention to Hunter's lost wallet.
    C. To find out the sender to express gratefulness.
    D. To sing high praise for the sender's generosity.
7 Which of the following best describes Brown?
    A. Innocent. B. Warm-hearted. C. Romantic. D. Easy-going.
    8. What's the best title for the text?
    A. Hunter Shamatt-a Lucky Man B. Young Passenger Reunites with Sister
    C. Helping Needy People Is a Great Virtue D. Stranger Returns Lost Wallet with More Cash Inside
B 6. C 7. B 8. D
Shortly after the flight, however, Hunter was shocked to receive a package in the mail from an unknown sender. Inside was his wallet-along with an additional $40 in cash. A. Under discussion. In vain. Beyond belief. At a loss.
Hunter's mother, Jeannie, posted a photo of the letter to social media in hopes that they would be able to track down the sender and thank them for their kindness.
Brown says that he often tries to do good deeds without any recognition, thus why he didn't sign his full name on the letter, but Jeannie later insisted on praising the Nebraska native on social media.
An airline passenger ensured a 20-year-old man was reunited with his lost wallet-along with a little extra something to make up for their time apart.
    C
The outbreak of locusts, an insect that mainly lives in Africa and Asia, is the worst experienced by Kenya in 70 years. The crowds are some three times the size of New York City, eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal grassland and destroying livelihoods in the process.
“These hungry things are alarming,” says Keith Cressman, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's senior locust forecasting officer. "A crowd the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined."
Desert locusts are infamous for their ability to breed(繁育)rapidly in large numbers every three months. And with some help from the wind, they can travel as much as 80 miles a day. Most years, the insects stay in African deserts. However, under the right environmental conditions, they can multiply quickly, spread as much as 400 times every six months and cause extensive destruction if left unchecked.
“The insect has the ability to take advantage of good conditions.” Cressman says.
The "good conditions" the scientist is referring to began in mid-2018 when a rainstorm from the Indian Ocean struck a remote area of the Arabian Peninsula known as the "Empty Quarter". Normally, it would dry out within a short period, killing most of the locust population, which depends on green plants for food. However, in late 2018, a second rainstorm struck the same region. The huge sandy area got wet, which is exactly what desert locusts need to lay their eggs and breed. The extra food supply caused the population to explode for the second time in six months.
Luckily, the locusts, experts say, are easy to control with chemicals. Kenya badly needs equipment and a steady supply of chemicals to effectively wipe out the massive insects. Hopefully, leaders worldwide will recognize the tough situation and contribute generously to control the locust outbreak.
    9. What can we infer from what Cressman says in paragraph 2?
    A. Little can dull locusts' appetite.
    B. Urgent action must be taken against locusts.
    C. Overpopulation in big cities leads to food shortages.
    D. New York and California should meet challenges together.
    10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. Locusts' living conditions. B. Locusts' destructive effect.
    C. Locusts' daily travel distance. D. Locusts' super reproductive power.
    11. For what purpose does the author mention "good conditions"?
    A. To explain immediate causes of the locust outbreak.
    B. To remind locals to preserve the environment.
    C. To analyze how to prevent locust outbreak.
    D. To highlight the strength of two rainstorms.
B 10. D 11. A
根据第二段“These hungry things are alarming,” says Keith Cressman, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's senior locust forecasting officer. “A crowd the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined.”
故选A。
    D
Under Ohio law, a driver can have 12 points’ worth of violations within two years before his license is automatically suspended (失效). That is, he could be caught going 30 miles over the limit three times or cause several accidents resulting in careless-driving charges before losing the right to drive. Should he commit vehicular manslaughter (驾车过失杀人), his license would be suspended, but he could get it back in as little as six months. Other states have similarly forgiving laws. Considering that 94 percent of crashes involve some form of driver error or injury immediately before crashes you have to wonder. Are we too tolerant of bad driving or is the problem more basic? Are we, as humans, simply not suitable for the task?
According to one analysis, 4 million of the nearly 11 million crashes that occur yearly could potentially be avoided if distractions (使人分心的事物) were removed. But instead, we actively seek out distractions, like texting. Analysis of 28 studies confirms that typing or reading on our phones while driving badly affects reaction time, vehicle control, and, yes, collision rate. Some researchers have concluded that texting while driving may cause more of an accident risk than driving either under the influence of marijuana (大麻) or at the legal alcohol limit. And, contrary to a generally accepted idea, teenagers aren’t the primary offenders: A survey of more than 2,000 adults suggests that they are just as likely as teens to have texted behind the wheel, and much more likely to have talked on their cellphone.
That isn’t to say we’re all equally bad in the driver’s seat. Perhaps unsurprisingly, people who report becoming angry while driving are more likely than others to behave recklessly (不计后果地) on the road. So are people who drive fancy cars. In one pair of studies, researchers observed that drivers of expensive cars were less likely than those with older, less expensive, or beat-up vehicles to give way to other drivers and pedestrians.
Driverless cars are looking better and better. They won’t text with each other, or get angry. And they won’t cut you off just for the hell of it.
    12. If a driver is going 70 mph in a 40 mph zone in Ohio, how many points may he lose?
    A. 10 points. B. 8 points. C. 6 points. D. 4 points.
    13. Which of the following causes the most accidents according to Paragraph 2?
    A. Texting while driving.
    B. Driving at the legal alcohol limit.
    C. Talking on a cellphone while driving.
    D. Driving under the influence of marijuana.
    14. Which of the following statements is True according to Paragraph 3?
    A. People driving older vehicles are more likely to behave recklessly.
    B. People driving fancy cars are more likely to behave recklessly.
    C. People driving beat-up vehicles are more likely to behave recklessly.
    D. People driving less expensive vehicles are more likely to behave recklessly.
    15. What might be the author’s attitude to driverless cars?
    A. Cautious. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Supportive.
D 13. A 14. B 15. D
根据第一段的“Under Ohio law, a driver can have 12 points’ worth of violations within two years before his license is automatically suspended (失效). That is, he could be caught going 30 miles over the limit three times or cause several accidents resulting in careless-driving charges before losing the right to drive.(根据俄亥俄州的法律,司机在两年内如果有12分的违规行为,他的驾照就会被自动吊销。
根据第二段的“But instead, we actively seek out distractions, like texting. Analysis of 28 studies confirms that typing or reading on our phones while driving badly affects reaction time, vehicle control, and, yes, collision rate. Some researchers have concluded that texting while driving may cause more of an accident risk than driving either under the influence of marijuana (大麻) or at the legal alcohol limit.(但相反,我们积极寻找分心的东西,比如发短信。 故选A。
根据第三段的“Perhaps unsurprisingly, people who report becoming angry while driving are more likely than others to behave recklessly (不计后果地) on the road. So are people who drive fancy cars. In one pair of studies, researchers observed that drivers of expensive cars were less likely than those with older, less expensive, or beat-up vehicles to give way to other drivers and pedestrians.(也许不足为奇的是,那些报告在开车时变得愤怒的人比其他人更有可能在路上鲁莽行事。
根据最后一段的“Driverless cars are looking better and better. They won’t text with each other, or get angry. And they won’t cut you off just for the hell of it.(无人驾驶汽车看起来越来越好。
